Trap Draw: Sin City

You’re now the 5th person I’ve seen/heard recommend Bavette’s and I wish I had known about that prior to going.

Capital Grille legitimately might be the best chain restaurant in the world. Hyperbole? Sure. But it’s got great food.

All-nighter the final night walking straight onto a cross-country flight to meet my bright-eyed, enthusiastic parents for law school graduation weekend.

My physical and mental strain had levels to it.

Golden Steer and Oscar’s are two of the best meals I’ve ever had.

Also, the best burger in town is at Bavette’s, and the one at the Nomad Bar also inside Park MGM is damned close, but smaller and somewhat less consistent. Echo & Rig’s is also incredible. And if you find yourself on the south end of the Strip looking for a more mid-range burger, Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar at Mandalay continues to do it right after many years.

The year was 2003, I was having some drinks with a friend in Greenville, NC and we decided it would be fun to go to Vegas for the weekend. Left the bar, got online and bought plane tickets for 30 hours later and made a reservation at the Luxor.

We get to Vegas, check in and start wandering around. Oddly we run into someone we know over at the MGM and I watch him lose about $2,000 in five minutes. Great lesson. End up back at the Luxor for $5 blackjack, keep winning small amounts, enough to keep paying for things. This happens all weekend.

Around 3 AM I go back to the room to get some sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night, I hear a girl, she’s trying to get my friend to wake up. Anyways, she has a cast on her foot and worked at the hotel, my friend had picked her up in the bar. She left, wake up the next morning and turns out she stole his phone.

Drunken debauchery the next day (Spearmint Rhino and Binions) and into Sunday. We have a red-eye back east that takes off Sunday evening. My friend stayed up from Saturday morning until the moment we get on the plane. We used to call him the Terminator for his ability to ingest alcohol and other things.

Fortunately my luck that weekend at the Blackjack table paid for about 2/3 of the trip. That luck deserted me on all future trips to Vegas.

Edit: The Luxor smells, or at least it did in 2003. Just a weird smell, enough to make you notice when you walk in, but slight enough to get used to it.

You had a chance to eat at Best Friend inside Park?

The fried wings, spicy pork, and dumpling sliders still make my mouth water.

Nah, not a Roy Choi guy, and the prices for what they’re making there are absurd, even for Vegas.

Eh I guess. If you’re playing 2/5 and below anywhere is relatively soft. I’d argue that 5/10 and up at Bellagio is the most pro/reg filled room there is. YMMV

1st photo taken outside Hash House whilst having brunch after an all nighter.

2nd image taken that afternoon at Ghost Bar Day Club.It was like Weekend at Bernie’s but we never leave a wounded soldier behind.

Some people just can’t handle Vegas.

I’m pleasantly surprised that a hundred posts in none of the Dwight Schrutes of the board have chimed in to bemoan @anon47037505’s advocation of the tipping culture.

The fact there hasn’t been a refuge meet up in Vegas is a travesty.

Great way to start the trip is stopping in the Centurion Lounge for tequila shots before going to baggage claim.

If arriving with at least 4 people, pre booked limo is the way to go. Forget that taxi line/uber-lyft.
