Trap Draw: Detroit

Oh I know. Doing some #testing. Have done 8 hours, 14 hours and 21 hours recently. Pork is impossible to screw up, but trying to game some different scenarios out. Was also more practice for keeping the coals going that long and not having to practice with a piece of beef which is 5-6x the cost.

Ummm, actually you can screw it up, speaking from experience.

For any visitors to the area, I can confirm that the Residence Inn downtown has enormous rooms. Not of vital importance, but always interesting to see the intersections of my life experience with what the pod talks about

I don’t know if we are creating new threads for each of these or piggybacking, but I had to pause the Detroit podcast to come here quickly to get something off my chest.

@Tron @Randy

You get into the topic of Detroit pizza chains and mention Little Caesar’s and Domino’s and fail to discuss Detroit Style pizza. No mention of Jet’s, no mention of Buddy’s, and no mention of how absurdly good a Detroit pan pizza is an absolute AFFRONT to the Refuge. I expect an apology.

Golf Club of Avon is a fun course.

There was disrespect for Detroit Coneys as well. Relish?

Maybe next year when fans are back they can come and get some learning.

A Detroit Coney can’t even be compared to a Cincy Coney. They are different foods. But yeah relish…not great.

I really want a chilli dog now. Not many places in my neighborhood that specialize, god I’d kill for a ballpark dog and a boring Rangers game.

Supposed to play there for the first time in a month or so. Looking forward to it.

Just finished Detroit episode and loved it. Perfectly nailed the description of ā€œa golf podcast not about golf.ā€ Loved the guest’s (forget his name already but remember it was sick) passion for Detroit and willingness to talk about some of the difficulties it has had. Spoke candidly about racial, political, and class tension. Contrast that with a Nantz CEO interview where everything is absolutely peaches and cream at BigCorp Solutions. Major shoutout to Randy for NPR quality work on this one. The TrapDraw has really come into its own recently, Jeezy would be proud.

Finally, got a chance to listen and had a few thoughts.

1- The Red Wings mostly got bad because mostly because of the salary cap. At one point in their peak I remember reading they had more salary on IR than the Sabres had on their entire roster. A team like the one they had in 2001 with Yzerman, Federov, Shannahan, Datsyuk, Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille, Lidstrom, Chelios and Hasek just isn’t feasible anymore.

2- Once the salary cap went in place, Ilitch spent the rest of his life chasing a World Series. They went from a mid market team to one of the 2-3 highest payrolls for several years. They also absolutely mortgaged their future trading away any prospect with a pulse. That’s part of the reason the Tigers are doo doo butter right now.

3- Not sure if you guys are Ugly Delicious fans but the S2 steak episode features The Schvitz in Detroit- which is just your normal former sex/ swingers club that is now a bathhouse/ steakhouse combo in the city. That episode is sick.

4- I think I’ve posted this in another thread but I feel like the Horace Rackham story is way under told. Henry Ford hired him incorporate the Ford Motor Company in 1903 and in the process talked him into investing $5K in the company. 13 years later the Ford family buys those shares back for $12.5M which is roughly ~$295M in today’s dollars.

Rackham then did what any of us with do if we suddenly won the lotto and started building golf courses. He hired Donald Ross to build this week’s 36 hole Detroit Golf Club and also had him build Rackham Golf Club to serve the public. He also bought a zoo way before Matt Damon and cut a ton of checks to Universities. I just think his story is pretty incredible.

Some (unsolicited) constructive feedback. I hope this doesn’t come across as criticism.

Listening to the latest Trap Draw and I love that Randy asked Bonnie about becoming a better interviewer. I think Randy has the raw materials to be a phenomenal interviewer, but I’ve noticed how differently he articulates himself when interviewing compared to when he’s just conversing with the guys. It jumped out most in the Damon Hack interview. Randy’s question are great - I’d love to see more confidence in the delivery. I’m excited to see where Randy takes his interviewing with more time and practice. I’m saying this because I know I do the same things: a lot of you knows, stammering, interjections in my own questions, etc. I think Soly is a great example of massive growth to a great interviewer in the last year.

Just caught the Detroit pod because I just have too many pods and not enough headspace.
As a long time lover of this city, and all her flaws, this was a decent enough bit of coverage. The coney is a perfect representation of the city itself. Kinda gross and messy but it tastes so good once it hits your lips. The regrowth in pockets has me highly optimistic for the future. That may not be saying a whole lot except when you consider where it was 20+ years prior.

As for Rackham… meh. Played it a few times but never appreciated it. Sort of like the Ross in Windsor. Maybe I’ll get back there someday but there are many other courses in the area I’d hit first. And I wouldn’t call Detroit a good golf town. Some may say its underappreciated. I think whatever that floor is for appreciation is about the right level.

How the hell does the only bridge from Detroit to Canada sell for only $30 million??? It carries 25% of US/Canada trade! By my math it collects $700,000 PER DAY in tolls!!!
