Trap Draw: Chop Sessions

Despite being a Sydneysider who has grown up in rugby league heartland, I was heartened to hear @Tron talk about Aussie Rules/AFL.

I went to my first game last year during Grand Prix weekend and it is definitely a more fascinating experience at the stadium seeing what else is happening off the ball. And the Melbourne Cricket Ground is one of those venues that you need to visit at least once in your lifetime.

Either code (AFL or NRL) would be well worth following over the next 6 months. Plenty of teams and players in each that encapsulate the C Suite/Strapped ethos, and, unless there’s geoblocking, both have YouTube channels with good highlights each week.

Fox Sports will air game or two per week of AFL live in the US. They’re just on at weird hours due to the time zones. Easy enough to set the DVR though.

“Are monkeys sentient?”

Tron, good lord…

The millineals (eg Tron and Randy) and youngers on here won’t know or remember this, but Aussie rules football was a staple of ESPN programming in the early to mid 80s before ESPN got rights to the US sports leagues and otherwise abandoned showing most sports in favor of their opinion shows that fill most of their day now.

Ah yes. I remember staying home from school and watching Aussie Rules Football and never, ever understanding it but loving the way the refs would signal a score.

I believe the other things on ESPN back then were rodeos and lumber sports.

Loved hearing the boys talk about AFL

@Tron Geelong is in Barwon Heads country plus there are plenty of other great courses down there. Get onboard with the Cats!

This one is pretty wild! No one is safe from joint Army/FBI training exercises. Also good on Delta for advocating for their employees, who could say what American Airlines would do in this situation.

Some very concerning news out of SeaTac this morning. Lawsuits flying back and forth between the airport and contractor. Concerning stuff

@randy you forgot to mention the most important stat in your NBA MVP race, the Anti Philly Index. Guessing Embiid scored a little higher than Jokic.

I had the most egregious case of PoS asking for a tip last night. I was in Chicago and went out with some friends, get to a bar and stand outside for an hour before we get in. Finally get inside and they’re asking for $10 cover so I pull cash out to pay and the lady goes “oh we do card only but you can use cash at the bar”. She spins the handheld thing towards me and it is asking for a fucking tip. 20%, 25%, and 30% were the options.

Tipping on cover charge? This world’s so stupid.

The William Finnegan New Yorker piece about Penn Station is quite the read. What an absolute mess that entire piece of real estate is. And the egos/wallets of a couple billionaires wreaking havoc on the commuting lives of millions.

Which is a shame for a number of reasons, the least of which is that the new international arrivals hall is objectively great. Can’t stay out of our own way.

Between that and the Bremerton ferry breaking down and going aground last night it’s been a tough scene for infrastructure here in the PNW

We just had dinner at a place last night that didn’t really do “traditional” tipping.
There was a 22% hospitality fee that they were super super up front about and the server at the end once again said “There’s the 22% fee, it’s split across all the servers, if you feel that you’d like to tip on top of that it goes directly to me”
Apparently this restaurant was really struggling to hire people, and after this, they’ve had to turn help away. It was a good way to do it

Would’ve absolutely lost my shit, hope that doesn’t become a norm because having to tip any amount for a fucking cover charge is malpractice.

This is what they do at Michelin starred restaurants, if at all. You don’t tip at Michelin places because it’s understood they pay their staff enough without trying to guilt customers into paying in addition to the menu price.

The places that do a % fee AND THEN expecting tipping are the worst though. I know of a few places in San Diego that do this and I will never give them my money again.
