@Tron if you enjoyed the obit on Oleg Gordievsky, I’d strongly recommend the book about his espionage and escape, The Spy and the Traitor, by Ben Macintyre.
If you’ve not yet gone down the spy history rabbit hole, there are some fantastic books in that genre, many of them written by Macintyre.
I loved when they went from the geothermal drilling story to the PE affordable housing scam story. There’s a solution right there.
If you’re going to defraud the government and rip off poor people, cool, we’ll just throw you in one of those holes. What happens to a person when they’re thrown into a twelve mile deep hole? We don’t know, but we’ll find out.
My worlds collided violently from this pod after the Rooster call out about Buck tech corruption. He’s from my hometown/high school and is quite the character.
Plaintiff’s lawyer here (ducks). Thanks for bringing this up. I just listened to the pod earlier today. Among the many things that gets lost when people hear about these massive verdicts is the fact that we aren’t sitting in the courtroom considering the evidence. No jury is going to award that much money unless the facts are egregious. Also, we don’t know how much was being demanded or offered prior to trial. If Starbucks wasn’t offering anything, then they’re essentially daring the Plaintiff to take it to a verdict. We also have safeguards in the civil justice system to curb awards that are out of line with the evidence (remittitur, JNOV), in addition to the lengthy appeals process. More than likely, this case will get settled while on appeal for a fraction of the actual verdict.
Those who support tort reform did an absolutely masterful job of taking the McDonald’s case and using it as a poster child for their propaganda. I would highly recommend the Hot Coffee documentary for anyone interested in this subject.
Yeah, that lady suffered 3rd degree burns from coffee that was knowingly served far above a safe temperature (I wanna say it was like 190 degrees or something), all so they could keep it sitting out longer. Its wild how its got spun into “shes so dumb she spilled her coffee and got paid” then, and over time. Even that she settled for a fraction of the actual judgement.
“TC, are you up to speed at all on what’s going down over in Pompeii?”
“No Big, I’m not! I went a little wild during some tab cleaning and deleted the one I had open on this and never revisited it. What’s happening?”
“It’s not good TC, not good at all. Looks like there was a massive volcanic eruption which completely buried the city of Pompeii. I believe it’s a stratovolcano or perhaps it’s a stratavolcano, I’m honestly not sure so I’m going to issue a proactive mea culpa there.”
“You know who it sounds like they could use over in Pompeii? ServPro.”
“You can say that again, TC. Faster to any size disaster and boy do they need it because when Mount Vesuvius stars bucking her head you can pretty much cancel Christmas.”
