Speaking of WSJ, astonishing article on Neom today. MBS is going to bankrupt the Kingdom with this shit. The scale is truly unimaginable, he’s going to blow through a trillion dollars on this, easy.

almost makes the Chinese housing market look attractive, by comparison

i mean, how could a 105-mile long dystopian-looking property in the middle of the desert NOT look like a good idea!?

Any time my dad would entertain the idea of putting in a pool at the house when I was a kid:

I was fortunate to grow up with a pool at my house.

My wife doesn’t understand why I won’t consider any house on the market with a pool.

Way better to know the person with the pool than be the person with the pool.

Pools, boats, lake/beach houses, convertibles, RVs, motorcycles, country club memberships: things that are better to borrow than own. I know this by owning most of them at one point.

My buddy wanted me to go in on a pontoon. I said I’d rather just rent one the probably 4 times a year it would actually get used.

2 best days of boat ownership:

  1. Day you buy it.
  2. Day you sell it.

It’s a cliche but sometimes cliches exist because they are true.

I’ve owned zero boats, but my handful of friends that have owned and sold boats confirmed this cliche is too true. Being on boats is a great summer activity, but owning them is a huge pain in the ass.

I made a similar realization for motorcycles a while ago. They’re fun, but not worth the additional safety risk and ownership effort versus a performance car.

I will only own a boat if i live on a freshwater lake and have a dock/storage for it. living in florida and seeing the cost of a boat that can go in the gulf of mexico, dry dock storage, maintenance, etc… is easily $2000 a month.

hard pass

I’ve been toying with the idea of a boat share memberships that run about $10k/year. You can reserve 25-27 days/summer and unlimited use if there are any available <24 hours ahead of time. That seems much more up my alley. Way less effort and stress. Would make a ton of sense to split with another family or two. Even 10 days on the water is a lot. I’ll probably just stick to the rental boat w/ a group of friends 1-2x/year.

Unless you’re someone of exceptional means and live in the coastal southeast or California, golf and boating seem to be mutually exclusive activities.

We put a pool in a couple years before covid. First few years it was great. Low maintenance, vacuum robot did most of the work, kids were 9 and 7 when we put it in. Expensive but everyone wqw happy. Fast forward to the past few years

My wife got sick of hosting most of our friends. We would do all the work, supply most of the food and drink, and they would leave behind a mess.

My girls are now 16 and 14 and give zero Fs about ever using the pool.

Its rained seemingly every weekend for the past two years. Last summer I think we used the pool less than 10 times total (other than the dog) and only 2 of those times were awesome all day pool days with friends and family over.

TLDR - pools stink

I’ve had several friends go this route. The shared boat club membership option is a pretty good deal if you’ve got a decent group to split it/coordinate schedules with.

Kayaks were the way to go for me. They’re pretty inexpensive unless you go for one of the top of the line tricked out models – but you might as well just buy a skiff at that point.

My dad’s leech of an ex-fiancee somehow convinced him to get an above ground pool and build a deck.

She got less than half of a summers use out of it before he kicked her to the curb. He still does the upkeep but I know he absolutely despises it and has talked about selling the house every spring/summer since.

This sounds exactly like my childhood and how our pool ownership went.

Then add in the days every year of work for powerwashing all the concrete around the pool, resealing it, taking all the chairs and umbrellas out of storage, cleaning those, cleaning them for storage, and putting them away.

2/52 weekends a year would be spent getting the pool area ready / closed down to then just not really use it that much in between .

I’m saying this with all due respect: you need better friends.

Absolutely! I’ve been saying that for years! At 48 beggars can’t be choosers though.
