Trap Draw : Airports 4.1 now out

That’s a great observation, Hawaii Time is a real thing and many people find out immediately upon arriving to a Hawaii airport. I’ve seen it throw people off big time more than once. I’m biased but the Big Island is by far less crowded and touristy and the best island to visit. I worked on the Hapuna side of the Mauna Kea Resort for a long time. Hapuna golf course is great too, and not closed til November!

United end of the terminal is good in my opinion. Lots of seating and high ceilings with some decent dining options.

This lady right here, when she first got on the plane and acknowledged the exit row, she said, “Oh, I’m not going to save anybody. If something happens, I’m going to save myself” :joy: :joy: :joy:

It’s an easy flight (when not cancelled by Alaska) so will definitely be back to check it out, it is wild how small the airport is for a decent amount of flights daily but looks like a construction project is underway.

Played Mauna Lani South and Kona CC and both were delightful

DFW story, we’re waiting out a 4.5 hour delay with a 4 and 1 year old.

I go to a family restroom for dipper change. 10 mins or so and I knock on the door, hear a flush and staff comes out like he was looking to change the roll, and was just hard at work.

Few hours later, dipper change two, same thing happened.

Third time, I’m headed there right before we get on, I see him a few yards ahead of me, he gets to the door; I yell out “Nu-Uh! You gotta let me go first I can’t wait on you again!”

I decided to give the Airports podcast a chance given it’s popularity. I live just outside Toronto and I basically never fly to the US, so I have no context for any of these airports. But I’m an hour in and totally captured by the pod. Credit to Andy and TC!

Here’s a starter for you: do you prefer Pearson or Billy Bishop and why?

Outbound Atlanta to Nice via Delta last Monday had the absolute worst 2 entrees ever - the bar was low and nobody flies for the food but impressively not good.

And after a 3.5 hr delay today spent over Lake Michigan and a refuel in Indy, their ORD groundcrew took 90 minutes to start luggage.

Going on a Delta break for a bit.

Had a horrible time in the security line coming back from Cancun two weeks ago. Bags going thru the scanner, the people in front of me and my wife were who knows where, and so their bins are holding up the line. While we are grabbing the first of our bins from the conveyor, the party behind us decided they were not waiting any longer, reached over/around the glass, takes our bin with my laptop, wallet, our phones, and passports and throws it off and of course lands in the trash can.

Thankfully the Mexico TSA equivalent officer saw all this, and took the extra time to get wipes to wipe down everything for us, but overall scummy behavior.

Which sidebar. The Cancun international terminal is a tough scene. In definite need of expansion

Unfortunately I’ve never flown out of Billy Bishop so I don’t really have a take. I’m not going to say Pearson is good but I’ve never really had an issue there. I have only flown out for vacation, never for work, so I might just be in a good mindset where any issues don’t bug me too much.

In Annapolis for work. First time through BWI.

Bleak. Low ceilings. Dimly lit.

On the upside the Uber situation is simple.

One Dead, Dozens Injured as Singapore Airlines Flight Hits Turbulence

Boeing jet flying from London Heathrow to Singapore is diverted to Bangkok

SINGAPORE—One person died and at least 30 others were injured aboard a Singapore Airlines flight that encountered severe turbulence en route from London to Singapore, the airline said Tuesday.

The jet, a Boeing 777-300ER that departed London’s Heathrow Airport on Monday evening, was diverted to Bangkok and landed Tuesday afternoon, Singapore Airlines said. The airline didn’t provide details about the circumstances surrounding the death and injuries.

The flight had 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.

Singapore Airlines said it was working with local authorities in Thailand to provide medical assistance and was sending a team for further support.

Turbulence during flights can cause sudden jolts, potentially endangering passengers and crew. Data from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board shows 163 serious injuries from turbulence between 2009 and 2022.

Of those, 129 were crew, who are more likely to be injured because they spend more time standing and not wearing a seat belt on flights.

In December 2022, several passengers were seriously injured when a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu hit severe turbulence. Injuries included head lacerations, bruises and loss of consciousness.

Ian Petchenik, a spokesman for flight-tracking service Flightradar24, said their initial assessment was that the plane hit turbulence just before 2:50 p.m. Bangkok time, based on data that shows the aircraft rose a couple of hundred feet in altitude. About 20 minutes later, it began its descent into Bangkok and landed there at 3:45 p.m. Petchenik said there were thunderstorms in the region.

The journey from London to Singapore typically takes about 13 hours, flying over parts of Europe, Central Asia and northern India, then turning southward over Myanmar and the Gulf of Thailand before the plane reaches its destination.

Plus 7 more in critical condition. Never thought turbulence could be so deadly.

Not wearing your seatbelt is what’s deadly

I saw some pictures of overhead panels with head-shaped dents in them. Can imagine the force necesary to do that can break your skull and/or neck, which is bad in itself, let alone in a tight space, 6 miles above the surface of the earth.

Torontonian here, Billy Bishop is a great little airport but its only short flights so its really a fair comparison. BB is great for me personally as I can take the streetcar to the underground tunnel, compared to Pearson which is a whole ordeal.

I used to have bad flight anxiety but now the only thing I am afraid of is this! I know the plane isn’t going down from turbulence but you could still get very injured or die apparently.

I wonder about the airlines like Emirates, Etihad, Singapore etc that have those shower suites for first class, just doesn’t seem like a great idea given something like this could happen

Just keep your seat belt fastened and think of how nice the Kona Coast will be while you’re driving up to Hapuna!
