Trap Draw : Airports 4.1 now out

I used to check 2 bags because I traveled with tools. Now that I don’t travel with tools, I’m a carry-on guy because I like having everything with me if I need to be flexible. I’ll gate check if I think there won’t be overhead space and I’m boarding near the end.

I’m a big fan of:

  1. check bag
  2. find a bar near my gate
  3. drink beer
  4. boarding with the last group of people

Team carryon here. I only check bags when I absolutely must (skis, golf clubs, etc) because I’ve been boned by bath salt smoking luggage handlers at a dozen airports. I’ve got both a duffle and a roller that I use depending on the size of the overhead bins. Backpack always under the seat in front of me, have 4 that I rotate through depending on how many laptops I’m taking, weather at destination, etc. Got CLEAR, Pre-Check, Global Entry for expediting as much of the security process as possible. I live no more than 20 minutes from the home tarmac via car or metro. It’s a point of pride to be back home before the folks who checked bags even see a glimpse of them on the carousel.

House to Love field/boarded on the plane in 20 minutes, pretty good lounge, incredibly easy check in process. Essentially like flying private.

Never seen a configuration like this before. What airline and plane is it?

First time to LaGuardia in I think 9 years.

Place was awesome.

I used the free laguardia to subway bus, which was extremely easy and well marked.

took the F train into manhattan.

$3, took a little less than an hour.

I am solidly in the camp of checking a bag every time I fly. Living within an hour of 3 major airports (EWR, LGA, JFK), I can fly direct to basically anywhere I need to go so I have minimal fear of my bag being lost. With the amount of nonsense people are bringing on planes under the guise of a “carry on”, I just don’t feel like jostling with these people for cabin space.

A recent highlight was flying LAX-EWR and a guy was trying to board with a roller bag, backpack, and garment bag. He argued until he was blue in the face that he wasn’t breaking any rules while the United employee kept pointing at each bag counting “One bag, two bags, three bags” at him.

Postscript on this, booked the return from Tokyo today. Couldn’t get business class on the way back, but there were seats available on the nonstop from NRT to BOS so we’re going to do that. At that point, we’re just going to want to get home so we chose the nonstop. Thanks to my wife hoarding AA miles and Marriott points so that we can fly on points each way. FWIW, it’s 35k AA miles in coach, but still really good value considering the cash fare is just north of $2k.

After the trip next spring, we’re probably out of the points game though. Wife doesn’t travel for work anymore so that gravy train is gone, and there’s only so much credit card spending that can be done. It was a good run.

Gonna suck being in cattle class for that long of a flight but helluva good points redemption.

Just boarded an AA CRJ700 with service from DCA to HSV. The AC is #weak and I’m really wishing I had shorts on instead of jeans.

Also, sounds like it’s time to be on the lookout for a good credit card signup bonus. Market isn’t amazing right now but we’re anticipating a hot summer signup season, check out the credit card thread

Almost booked this from Burbank - Vegas recently. I’ve been wanting to try it out.

APU could have been in/op. Did they have to start an engine at the gate before pushback?

Don’t think they did. It came on better once we got in the air. Just landed in Huntsville. This airport is just so empty.

This was interesting to read

I’m thinking of upgrading to the seat on the 1-2 first class section of my flight Sunday.

$171 for 2.5 hrs

SkyClub update:

  • New SkyClub at the end of G at MSP is supposed to be very nice. It has gotten good reviews. I flew out yesterday, but was in C and only had 30 minutes or so, so went to the one at the top of F. Good news was that was pretty quiet
  • Just spent a couple of hours in the new SkyClub at ORD in Terminal 5. It’s an amazing upgrade from the old shoe box in the other terminal. I know Terminal 5 lacks amenities, but the SkyClub is great. I’d put it up there with SEA as one of my favorites. There are also showers, which is great if you are going right from the golf course to the airport.

Flew home from Aruba yesterday. AUA is a hellhole. They take a pound of flesh and soul from you on the way out as payment for a week in paradise.

Also…entered domestic hellhole of BOS Logan and waited an hour for our luggage to finally appear at midnight.
