Trap Draw : Airports 4.1 now out

Wellington NZ’s airport has an interesting vibe. Very Lord of the Rings’ish.

We took a whale watching tour from Vancouver to Victoria a few years back, and flew on the seaplane to return to Vancouver. It provided great views but was SUPER loud. Shout out to the baby humpback who put on a show for us during the whale watching tour.

Underrated city, too.

I used to fly “private” monthly from City Centre to Calgary back when the provincial government still owned a small fleet of aircraft. Nothing would beat showing up 5-10 minutes before departure, having your name ticked off a clipboard, and on you go. Sad day when Premier Redford was caught booking an entire plane with fake names so she could fly alone, leading to the next premier to sell the fleet. I always wondered if my name was on one of those fake manifests.

Fredericton (YFC) was my home airport for my first 25 years. It’s mainly turboprops running regional routes and the odd jet to Toronto. For the longest time it only had one gate and it was #2 (it’s since been renovated and I believe has dedicated Air Canada and WestJet gates).

Had no idea you were from New Brunswick, my mom is from Saint John and we have a ton of family in that province. Almost moved to Miramichi at one point, too. Beautiful part of the world. Also had a St Andrews Golf Course that we can never let Andy Johnson know about.

My grandmother was a member at the Algonquin in St. Andrews for 60+ years and I still vaguely recall the original (Ross, I think) routing. As a youngster I was very confused about the home of golf thing.

I finally found some time to dive into the first part of the pod, very enjoyable so far. I don’t travel by air often, maybe once or twice per year, but it is fascinating to me what goes into it all and what can make or break a trip. Fun to read about the experiences from some of you world travelers in here.

Seems like Delta is a favorite airline for a lot of folks, but I’ve not had an opportunity to fly with them in the past few years, hopefully will get to try it again soon. I should also do my own research, but if anyone has good recs for a credit card to build miles or status with Delta, let me know.

When I do travel for work, which is like once a year, it takes me to MHT so my main choices flying from home airport GSO to MHT are American or United. This year when I made the trip I flew American, it was fine. They did a snack cart for flights barely longer than an hour which I thought was weird, but free snacks so ok. Connected through PHL on the way up and CLT on the way home, agree that CLT was way too busy. I didn’t have a long layover either way so I didn’t go explore, but I thought the terminals I was in were fine, nothing mind blowing but they were not claustrophobic and things looked relatively modern.

Maybe this will start a fight or maybe I’ll get some valuable info for a non-frequent flyer, either way I’m here for it. Hypothetical trip from GSO to MHT, American vs United. American goes through CLT, PHL, or DCA, 3 possible aircraft: ERJ-145, CRJ 900, CRJ 700. United goes through EWR and is on CRJ-550s. Is there one route that is way better than the others?

Since it is infrequent travel, I’d probably opt for driving to down to CLT and flying direct. Long drive to an airport but at least that way you control your itinerary and timing. Less chance of impact from delays and do not have to worry about short/long layovers.

Flew out of My main airport DCA yesterday for the first time since they opened the new security lines. It has made a very good airport even better. All the terminals are now after security, opening up more food and bev opportunities or even just a chance to go for a long walk. Also a centurion lounge opening in a few months as well.

I will throw dca up against most smaller large airports in the country now.

Signed a delta flyer in DC. IAD is a necessity if you need an international flight from, but I don’t like it. BWI had zero appealing qualities, for me….I know Baltimore residents that sing it’s praises, but I don’t get it.

One security line for all gates at National is great. Did they build something new for TSA security? I am having trouble envisioning where the single security line might be.

Right on cue regarding our lounge discussion, Delta planning a premium lounge at JFK that should be comparable to a Polaris or American Flagship lounge.

Also one thing we haven’t discussed, American flight attendants pushing credit cards over the intercom. Is that still going on? Drives me mad.

Yes so the old 35x is now it’s own terminal at the north side of the airport for AA commuter flights. They added 2 rooms for security one for the United and delta gates and a north security for AA. They are own the level below ticketing. And both dump you out onto the main hall where you can access everything. Game changer.

Yep, every flight still. It’s terrible. With the new Loyalty Points method of earning status and CC spend counting towards elite status, I suspect this will only continue.

As long as selling points to co-branded credit cards is the most profitable part of running an airline, this will continue.

Thought about that, for the work travel I didn’t want to make my wife drive all that way though, also didn’t want to get in trouble expensing a taxi/uber all the way there when there are several options locally. For personal travel it definitely makes more sense to do it that way, we’ve flown in/out of RDU a few times quite easily.

It’s sort of like how pre-2008 car makers were making more from their in-house financing business than from the sale of vehicles.

Have you disputed the charges on your credit card? I’m in the same situation and plan to dispute.

Was in Vegas earlier this week and apparently they renamed McCarron airport after Harry Reid.
