Tourist Sauce Season 3: LA to San Francisco

“You just lost the World Series, how do you feel?”

God I hate post game interviews.

I love that we are simultaneously shitting on Sergio in two different threads right now.

Lahinch Old Course costs 230 pounds/$280 USD to play. Forrest Hill is $29.

Why can’t cost be a factor in ratings? Should be in my opinion. I’m sure it is for your average Golf Now user. Is Lahinch 10X the course? You can’t even take a cart.

Again, the target audience matters for that Golf Now list.

I mean I guess that is kind of what the magazine lists are. The people who have played only 50 or so courses get no real say in it.

I’ve played with a couple of magazine raters and each of them has played an absurd number of courses. I’ve played 300 courses how would my #1 be weighted against someone who has played 3000 courses?

interesting play. But my god, I can’t wrap my arms around it. Is Lahinch 10x the course Forrest Hills is? No.

More like 20x.

You don’t get it, that’s fine.

There was a very good gca thread where they did the best “bang for your buck” courses. So, a place like Wild Horse would be on there, as a 7 for $50, but so would Pacific Dunes as a 9 for $250. They had some sort of quality for the $ ratio that I recall making sense to me. Worth searching for on there if this sort of thing interests you.

And Pine Valley is arguably the best course in the US. But again, it doesn’t matter if you can’t play it.

Do you think your average Golf Now guy looking for Hot Deals on 18+cart in the Naples FL. can wrap his head around the cost and time for traveling to Ireland to play Lahinch?

No one is looking to Golf Now for bucket list courses. That’s why I say the audience matters when pulling out a Golf Now ranking link and using it to say crowd sourced rankings are no good.

I’m not disagreeing with the assessment that you can’t compare them for a multitude of reasons, but NEVER would I use the “x divided by y = x times better” – that’s all. No, the golf now guy can’t, but I don’t give two shits about his opinion, because it’s driven completely by cost.

Dude it is Forrest Glen. I can’t price check it because oddly the place is private. Their website however does proudly promote:
“Ranked #1 in the country in 2013 by GolfNow, a Golf Channel sponsored online booking program.”

I don’t disagree that audience matters. I also agree price matters when I’m making my choices. GD tried doing some value based thing one year as well.

What I am saying is if you want to get a crap list go with a broad spectrum of golfers that have seen just a couple courses.

Well, I was being a bit facetious. The “you can’t even take a cart” line was my tell.

In case anyone feels like absolutely cracking up for a minute or two.

Follow your link on Golf Now. $29 (down from $89!).

All about this philosophy #teeitforward

Not seeing Forrest Hill
1 - Forest Glen Golf & Country Club
2 - Spring Creek

Are those not the first 2 on the list you see off that link?

Do you actually have your decile rankings or were you just spit balling an example with Dove Valley? As a current Phoenix resident I would be interested in a fellow refugees rankings for the area.

All due respect to KVV who I think initially brought this up in this thread. But honestly who gives a flying fuck what a course is rated?
I go back to a reference I made talking about GCA threads being like the episode of South Park where everyone loves smelling their own farts. Discussing course rankings has that same feel to me.

For me personally, I’d like to see a list of “woke” type courses for travel purposes. Let’s say I go to Austin and want to golf, I have nowhere to look currently.

Your first post on the subject was Forest Glenn. Not sure where the switch to Forest Hill was made, did I miss a pivot?

I see

Forest Glenn
Spring Creek
Gold Mountain

You’re right that Forest Glenn appears to be a private (ish) course, but they do have Golf Now bookable times.

I’m not all in on Forest Glenn mind you, but my only point was that you have to take Golf Now for what it’s worth. They claim to have 5,000 courses in the world on their site. The US alone has ~15,000 golf courses so obviously they’re not a definitive ranking to even start. Even if they had a curated list of reviewers.

I agree and disagree (definitely agree about the South Park thing). If done like how @KVV said, it’s actually helpful, unlike the list with Pine Valley, etc. Whether I’m work traveling and looking for a one-off place to play, or want to plan a golf trip, a thoughtful, accessible list like this is a great resource. It’s also fun to talk about.
