For perspective, I do some very simple video editing at work. Putting together a 5 minute video, shot by one camera, with minimal editing, takes me 2-3 hours. These guys have multiple cameras going every time, and probably have to go through at least 5 hours (I would guess more like 10; they’re using some pretty serious equipment out there) of video for every 20ish minute episode. And if you’re switching shots frequently like they do, that requires a lot of editing. Wouldn’t be surprised if editing one episode took a week to do.
The only one of these courses I’ve played (though Pasa is happening this summer) is Harding Park. I’m very curious how they like(d) it because I think it’s incredibly overrated. There are a few GREAT holes but a ton of simply boring ones. Because I live in the Bay Area I’ve been fortunate to play it a lot in various incarnations (it got a big overhaul a few years back and have played it 2-3 times since). I can barely remember more than a handful of holes, and I typically can recall all 18 holes of a great course. This all said, I’ve never played it from the back tees where at least @Soly should be playing from. Should be interesting.
My wife and I met some sailing vloggers that we follow on YouTube. Their videos are likely on par with the TS series from a production standpoint. They said on average for every minute of produced video they publish, there is at a minimum an hour of work time involved. So a 40 minute video is essentially an entire weeks worth of work.
I cannot stop laughing at @MerchCzar yelling his own last name as he pulls the RV out
A couple more things to add since I spent five years of my life in video production. Don’t forget that everything takes time like:
-
Ingesting video - fancy way of saying uploading the files into the editing software
-
Creating graphics - animating anything (light effects, background swaps, and more things you wouldn’t believe) takes time to not only do, but also to render (render = the computer piecing the data together to make something look as it should)
-
Reviewing the footage and selecting the best take and/or finding the right footage but the audio sucks so you have to pull the audio from a different camera and try to line up timing in the editing suite. Efficient editors will just slap some b-roll in there and make the audio be a voice over.
*Finally, you have put in a long day in the editing bay and tell the editing software to compress the file and make it into an mp4. You go home and come back the next day to only find the editing software crashed and you have to wait for the software to compress everything so you sit on your ass for an hour…longer if the file contains 3-D animation.
Has anyone reached out to Peter Kessler for comment on the trailer?
Work with video editors on a regular basis and have to speak-a da language. I can confirm that rendering is the worst. And that you can do a lot of editing magic when there’s good, interesting b-roll footage.
Thanks to the recommendation on the West Coast trip podcast, I am now listening to the “End of the World Podcast” and thinking about existential doom.
Great!
Personally I’m very excited to see the off the course antics, I follow NLU because they’re genuine golfers with hearts of gold.
All there content feels inclusive and as if I’m there. I want them to take me to the West coast I want to experience that as if I’m there. I want to feel as if I’m cold if they’re getting rained on. The High and Lows are what make Tourist source & strapped. I can’t wait to see how I’m a part of this trip and keep up the good work boys
I’ve been fortunate enough to play every course on their itinerary with the exception of Ojai and Stanford. Apart from the expected accolades for Rustic, MPCC, Pac Grove, Pasa, I was delighted to hear the guys support of Harding and Sandpiper. As a former resident of SF for 5 years, @MerchCzar said it best in that Harding just feels like home. I must have played there 50 times and it really is just an awesome vibe and exceedingly playable/walkable course - it still blows my mind that residents can play a major championship track for $60 (and $20 replay!).
As they all mentioned, the views at Sandpiper are pure insanity. Gotta say that starting on the front only makes it better…the first four are all inland, building to the massively uphill 5th. When you get to the top of the hill, you see this (shoutout to the oil rig):
You know the ocean holes are coming, but the little inland stretch on the first 4 just makes it that much more of a “holy shit” moment. Couple more pics just to illustrate the location, and because I had one of the most fun rounds of my life there:

Looking back at 18, with the 10 fairway on the right. I imagine this is where @Soly was standing when he was almost killed:
Was reaaaalllly hoping for Northwood.
Very excited for RV hijinks
Would have loved to see the boys with the RV hanging with the bohemians
I’m glad the crew discussed the “trees in the fairway” hole in depth on the pod.
Please let there be video of Randy getting smacked down re: WiFi.
Listening to the pod. Woah. Back a bit away from the mic when you are gulping breaths. Not naming names. DJ.
Played all but Stanford and Olympic.
F#$%%ing Sandpiper was the first time in my life I got poison something or other rash. It was terrible. The course has cursed me and I can no longer go searching in the junk for my shit shots (got it a few other times but nowhere near as bad).
Not naming names either, but Randy does a breath in mid-sentence that you can also usually catch on the #hotmikes.
I know, I always find myself thinking he must have murdered some Mexican food right before the podcast.
Acid reflux is the worst.
Tomorrow…
