This thread is for the tinkerers and new (or old) club junkies that would like to take the time to tell others their impressions and opinions of golf clubs.
After posting a review of the new Callaway UW in Daily Deals thread (of all places), it was suggested we have a better place for such information.

On Course Review
Where it fits in your bag / your game (yardage, shot shape, flight etc)
Shaft options
Where to get a good deal on said club / cost
I’ll drop mine as an example but feel free to take it any direction you want, including reviewing products not otherwise covered in existing threads.
Look behind the ball is what I like. Neutral to slightly open face, simple clean topline and the shape is more like a small fairway wood than a hybrid.
Gap filled! I went with the 21 hoping it would slide in between my 5 iron (185) and 5 wood (205). Bingo, 195. (I’m adjusting these based on shitty range balls as to where they are landing in relation to my known clubs/yardages)
Predictable but Workable - I feel fairly confident that my normal swing produces a reliable high cut. (or slice when tired ha). I was hoping that without too much manipulation, I might flight a lower piercing straight ball. Initial attempts seem promising…though I’m still getting used to a shaft I’ve never played (Mitsubishi MMT 80 S) - I like the shaft though. feels stable and more steel-like without the weight.
face feel - these callaway faces are pretty great. I tried the apex hybrid 21 and hated the shape and the fact that it appeared mega closed at address but I did love the feel of the face. This UW just slaps.
Cons:
Is it too good? My stock swing produces the reliable high cut sure enough…however, it might be too high? I was def hoping to take this to Ireland but I’m a smidge worried about that height in windy conditions. Could be hitting off of mats though. And my range you sort of hit down a hill…so sometimes it’s the illusion of a high ball flight.
On Course Review
After taking it out on the course, I’ve concluded it is definitely more workable than I originally thought. I hit it off the tee a few times. Once, an easy stock swing 190ish with the left to right, high flight and once a low flighted left to right slinger that led to birdie on 18. I also hit it from the fairway into a par 5 and hit an absolute mid flight laser from 195yds into the wind that stopped middle of the green leaving eagle putt. SICK!
This thing is staying in the bag.
Where to Buy: Currently sold out but cycling onto Callaway Pre-Owned! for $259
I have always played a 34” putter. Not long ago, someone listed an Evnroll on here and I decided to buy it. But I think @chrismarz (?) beat me to it. Then I hit an Evnroll in a golf store and I didn’t like it and I thought maybe everything worked out.
But, as things always do, it burrowed into my brain. I needed a fucking Evnroll. What am I missing? COULD I BE A GREAT PUTTER?! THE EVNROLL IS THE ANSWER.
So I found one on FB and the dude wanted 225 for it. I talked him down to 200. Perfect. Then he didn’t send it. Okay, little nervous. Messaged him and he didn’t reply. Cool. Lucky I sent it “goods and services”, which I rarely do. Next day it shows up. Take it out of the box and I’m erect. Can’t wait. Practically drooling. Hold it up and…
It’s like my 6 year olds putter.
It’s tiny. Grab the tape and it’s 31 inches if it’s an inch. He hastily slapped a 34” sticker either back on it after it was cut down or stole it from a different putter. I, being the idiot I am, thought “maybe this is a sign from the Lord of Putting” and I put that mother fucker in play.
Been rocking the baby putter for a month or two now. Fucking love it. If I ever hit a green, I might be dangerous. But it feels great! I get a little wider and right over the ball. Confidence is at an all time high.
Buy a fucking baby putter.
edit
One fucking ridiculous drawback to Team Baby Putter is it is almost impossible to lean on when you’re waiting for someone to chip. Truly a fucking give and take here.
Thank you for the picture edit, I had no fucking clue what you meant.
I don’t know! I don’t really feel like it, but probably a bit. Like I said I just widened my stance a ton and I feel much more stable. Plus, I have always (in putting and in every other facet) really struggled with a consistent stance and I feel like The Widening ™ has really helped with that, too.
Yea, I sniped you, and also putting well (this could be due to the Rotella book which I’m trying to sear into my brain, more than the putter). Either way, I’m glad its in my bag, and I’m glad your and your baby putter are working out. With this knowledge, I now expect my sleep numbers will improve, its been truly a stress on me
Speaking of Evnroll, about three years ago I went and got fitted for a Scotty, and it was fine. But the Evnroll curiosity got me too, I knew with Guerin Rife behind it, it had to be good. I ordered the same specs as I had been fitted with for the Scotty - I had the Squareback so I got the Evnroll ER2 to match the head.
The Evnroll has been in the bag ever since and the Scotty is in the closet as a backup. The ER2 head is slightly smaller than the Squareback. The feel is more pronounced, a solid click with the ball, the Scotty is a more muted thud with the insert. The big thing I really like is the two subtle sight dots on the top of the ER2 - somehow they really help with lining up especially short breaking putts. I have been meaning to send it off to one of the putter re-finishing shops to get a custom finish put on, but I’ll need to wait until the off season at this point, I don’t want to go without it.
So the question about the grooves, do they help? Honestly I don’t notice a difference in the ball rolling nicely compared to the Squareback - they both roll off the face well, it helps the loft/lie is fitted to me. The biggest difference for me is the feel, I much prefer the solid piece of milled stainless steel vs an insert.
Yeah I had that one in black and loved the feel of the face too. Went through a bad stretch and snap sold it. Went to a Mizzy milled blade for a while and now back with an Er8v…sort of mid mallet with a little toe hang. So far so good - that’s how putting goes haha
ER5 here. I have never gotten fit for a putter so I’m sure I did it wrong. I thought that when I bought a “real” putter it was going to be an Odyssey mallet I would visit whenever I had to run to DSG for whatever latest thing my kids needed for various sports.
Then one early spring day I spent some quality time at a PGA store pretty much trying every brand and style of putter, trying to understand the differences, including the wild variations in price. I was all set to go with a mallet style that was $100, but I wanted it in a different length. The guy went back to look for it, and while I was waiting I made the mistake of picking up the ER5. A few putts and it was over.
I have a buddy with a black ER2 he doesn’t really get along with. Part of me wants to borrow it for a few rounds to see how it compares. I love the feel off the face, weight and balance of the ER5, but those mid-mallets get me on aesthetics.
IMO there is no right or wrong way for putters, if it works it works. I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of new putter sales involve something like your experience - you pick one up off the rack and it’s just a natural fit. It couldn’t hurt to try the ER2 just to see how it works for you
Meet my wife’s putter, B. It is my wife’s because it was part of the fitted bag she gifted me for our 15th anniversary. Love the head and weight of it, ball pops off the face, and Quintic data resulted in a couple loft/lie adjustments to optimize it last year.
Then this year I decided to tinker with a Stability shaft, sold on the data. I love the feel of it; it reminds me of the feel I got from the face dampener in my old Ping G5i but without the dampened launch.
I might get it refitted following the shaft install to confirm loft/lie are still optimal as I feel like I’ve had more suboptimal contacts with it since.
