The Refuge Feedback Thread

While I agree with the dislike of burners (especially being last night’s target), I don’t love the idea of adding a waiting period. Think that’s going to dissuade more people than it’s worth, and I for one am certainly pro #GrowTheRefuge.

Perhaps if a comment gets flagged within the certain first N comments (maybe even on first day), that should trigger an immediate suspension (24h) / review / something along those lines. @McSchvantz

The burner account in question last night came out firing with the very first comment being flaggable.

Burners on a fairly niche golf discussion forum (although I know it’s so much more than that) is such a laughable, absurd concept. If you feel the need to create a burner to wade into the Refuge, high tail it back to Reddit where you can stay permanently.

Yeah, that makes sense to me as an option as well.

Not entirely sure what the best approach is, but something to help limit those clearly lacking in impulse control would be beneficial.

didn’t NR get busted for burners once already? If it was him last night, that has to be grounds for permanent ban.

Yes, he did get busted once for burners. It was the Axelrod account.

I could cosign on this

Not the Underhill account?

that being said, I like the solution I came up with.

We want a solution that:
A) Allows new members immediate access to the Refuge, so we retain our open community status.
B) Allows for faster suppression of burner / toxic accounts by creating a “probation” timeline (whether # of comments or # of hours of existence) during which all offenses are more punishable.

I think it’s probably easiest to have a “first 24-hour” timeline during which any flags (or multiple flags, up to the community / @McSchvantz) trigger suspensions faster, so that the account last night would have made one comment (or two) and immediately been silenced rather than becoming more and more toxic (and resulting in thread closure, which silences everyone).

Plus, since the number of comments for the first day is capped, there’s probably a structure that allows for this already.

We already have some rate limits set up around new users, and flags (particularly from higher levels) are more punitive for them. I missed the fun from the alt accounts, but I’ll sync with the other guys and we’ll think about tweaking some of the new user thresholds in a way that ensures new people can still join and interact with the community immediately while allowing the community to lay the hammer if they start acting a fool. The good news is I think everyone here is on the same page for what the end goals are.

Re: certain trolls + burners, we have other nuclear options we can take if that continues to be a problem, and we can also do some things to at least make it more of a pain in the ass for a troll to burner effectively. I’m honestly kind of floored this is a real issue we’re talking about, but…I guess that means we made it. Congratulations, everyone, we did it.

:joy: Technically speaking, yes, this is a thing we can do. I’ll talk to the arbiters of these kinds of decisions and see if we can bring some more fun to titles.

Just PMd you some more details. Thanks so much for taking care of this. Trolls everywhere, but (for the most part) this community seems to run quite smoothly most of the time, so we appreciate the work you do to keep it that way.

Awesome.

Following up on this issue…Not sure if anything was updated/adjusted but as of yesterday it appears resolved and I’m back to being able to be constantly logged in through the ios safari on my phone.

Yesssss thank god, I wasn’t able to reproduce this issue personally so I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the problem was. They pushed a fix for a similar sounding issue a few days ago, so it sounds like the upgrade I performed yesterday might have fixed it. :raised_hands:

Also, fwiw, while digging into this I found out there’s a Discourse app that you could use for the Refuge. Just sayin for anyone that needs even more push notifications.

This needs to be bumped publicly. Maybe even its own thread.
