The Op3-'n:10k or bust (Part 1)

What are your favorite pizza toppings?

My go-to for a typical order is pepperoni, onion, and giadiniera if they offer it, sub pepperoncini or banana peppers if we’re outside of Chicago. Thin crust reigns supreme here but we dabble in Detroit style and deep dish every few months to change things up.

What golf ball are you playing this season?

I’m team Maxfli in the Tour S to start the season but may be moving over to the regular Tour for some additional firmness. Tour S can feel like a bit of a marshmallow during the summer but it’s perfect for getting things going in the cold.

Adding a break to answer @OffTheDole’s prompts:

Rate your level of competitiveness

I’m fairly competitive, would put it at about a 7. Grew up playing all sorts of sports and has transferred onto the course when playing as a team or in a match, but keep it light hearted and am more focused on how I’m doing instead of using it outwardly against a competing player.

Do you prefer to walk or ride? Why?

9/10 rounds are with my push cart. Slowing things down helps me focus on my game and gives me time to process (read: vent) about any bad shots or situations I put myself in. Will ride if playing with my dad or if the course format makes walking a burden.

You’re 230 yards out to reach a par five in two. What club are you hitting and what do you think your chances are of executing the shot?

If there’s no trouble in front, looking to hit a 4-iron to around the front of the green and let it release back as needed. If there’s trouble in front, choked down 5-wood and try to fade it in and land soft. Probably about a 40% chance with the 4-iron and a bit less with the 5-wood to land the green, but should be in a manageable spot barring a shank most times.

What’s your perfect Sunday?

Mid-morning tee time with my dad, get home in time to watch a 3:30 Packers game (which they win), once the game is over Sunday is our “fancy” meal night at home so get set-up to cook with my wife then unwind watching a movie or whatever show is on tap with a cocktail.

Love the prompts!

  • I’m always trying to play my best and improve, and when it’s real competition time I can get pretty into it. I have to try to not let poor play dictate my mood in competitions a lot
  • Walking, being in New England means I have to savor all outdoor exercise. My body feels good and makes me play better in my opinion
  • 5 wood, Don’t overexert to try and kill it because it’s not a sure thing that it’ll get there on a perfect strike. I give it 10% to reach the green, 40% to be 10 yards short, 50% to have it go comically wrong

Now for the perfect Sunday

  • Wake up at 7, have a smoothie consisting of Berrys, Peanut butter, banana, vanilla protein, matcha powder, and soy milk.
  • Out the door at 7:45 for a 9 oclock tee time (may vary depending on course I’m driving to)
  • Play 18 on a 68 degree sunny day.
  • Have lunch, possibly a glizzy and chips, or maybe something more complex like a caesar wrap, chicken sandwich or Burger.
  • Play another 9-18 holes depending on daylight.
  • Pick up a chicken finger sub 3-way or a roast beef 3-way from my favorite shop on the way home
  • Devour it before taking a nice long shower to recover.
  • Watch a movie while my girlfriend falls asleep on the couch even when she says she won’t.
  • Sleep and be sad I can’t do it all again the next day

Depends on the round and the stakes, but somewhere around 7-8. LOVE team golf.

Walk if possible, but carts are fine too

Can I tee up a driver? If yes, probably still only a 25% chance at best lol

Sunday: Early round with the guys, late morning round with Mrs Justmuckit, then home to be lazy watching golf the rest of the afternoon, have a few cocktails and make Sunday dinner.

  • Level of Competitiveness?
Normal internal level, 4. Real Stakes? bumps to maybe a 7 or 8. Batti had me at a 9 last year though, had to match his vibe, couldn’t let the partner down.

  • Walk or Ride?
Walk / push as much as possible. Find myself falling on bad habits when riding. Easier to stay in relaxed state when I keep my body moving. No qualms riding when its called for or requested though.

  • 230yard second shot into a Par 5, what are you hitting?
5w. 15-20% chance of success. In my head is a sure thing though.

  • Perfect Sunday
Coffee, walk the dog,10-20mg edible, head out to the tee time, grab a bite, home around noon, nap, another 20mg, catch the leaders teeing off, meal prep for the week, clean up, another walk or a workout, in bed by 9.

8-9/10

I’m very competitive in nature but more so against myself. I have high expectations for myself and love the challenge of constant improvement. That said, I very much do not need to play a game on the course to get the competitive juices going because I only truly care how I measure up against myself. I don’t like playing for money. It adds no joy to golf for me. I’m always down for friendly competition though and love the competitive Roost season.

  • Do you prefer to walk or ride? Why?

Walk (push cart mafia). I enjoy being active whenever possible. I enjoy connecting with nature and the walk between shots. If everyone is walking it’s great to have conversations with all three playing partners vs just your cartmate. Walking feels more natural and makes me feel more connected/locked into the round. Sitting in a cart brings more disconnection. If a round is slow, carts bring more sitting around and waiting. That said, if I’m playing an afternoon round in the summer and it’s 115° then I’ll likely ride.

  • You’re 230 yards out to reach a par five in two. What club are you hitting and what do you think your chances are of executing the shot?

Conditions dependent, but most likely my 4 hybrid. Chances of executing 35%

  • What’s your perfect Sunday?

Non-vacation edition:

6:30: workout
8:30: church
10:30: brunch - most likely getting some sort of egg skillet dish and a waffle
12:30: walk 18
5:30: dinner at a steakhouse
8:30: watch an episode of whatever show I’m watching
9:30: wind down/sleep

LCP with speed post incoming

In state and USGA stuff, all of it. Ope, this is my fun time, so I’m not going to grind it out the same way, but I still like winning.

Depends. Home course playing in the morning, walking as always nice. But happy to ride to buzz around faster too. Tournaments golf is a walk with a looper situation, ideally, but some require carts and that’s okay too. The Ope is a ride situation. I get to hang, have a place for all my shit, and relax more too.

Another depends situation. Need to know more to answer fully. But if we assume just a flat shot into a mundane green and no real wind, 4 iron. Unless I’m playing the Irish with @Ultra-Kiger and @mikedabomb and then I just nuke a 5 over the green.

95% worst case I put one in the bunker or miss just off the green and go get up and down for the bird.

Depends on the circumstances as I’m hyper competitive in most things…have a real hate to lose attitude. For golf, I’m probably a 6 or 7 as I’m more focused on just having a good time.

  • Do you prefer to walk or ride? Why?

Walk all the way. Like the little bit of exercise plus I always like to use the time walking to my ball to help think through my next shot.

  • You’re 230 yards out to reach a par five in two. What club are you hitting and what do you think your chances are of executing the shot?

This is 3 Wood all day for me. Favorite club in the bag and love to hit a high cut that lands softly.

  • Perfect Sunday

This is likely to change later this year but for now, early morning tee time that lets me get home by lunch. Prep some pizza dough to proof and play a board game with my wife. Make pizza on our rooftop followed by drinks til the sun sets.

Used to be a 10, high school golfer DombrowBryan would want to rip your heart out and roast a 2 iron stinger to it. These days, I’m probably an 8 on the scale. I still want to win no matter the activity, but it’s not all that matters.

  • Do you prefer to walk or ride? Why?

Ride, I’ve become a Florida man in golf. Most courses here aren’t walkable because of neighborhood builds and the heat of 1000 suns. I also loved the scooter last year, but it took away the opportunity to share a cart with @ReallyFatPat, which robbed me of a four hour pro wrestling conversation of joy.

  • You’re 230 yards out to reach a par five in two. What club are you hitting and what do you think your chances are of executing the shot?

If I can run it, the 4 utility club (driving iron or one length hybrid) is coming in hot. If I need to carry all the way or have a bit of breeze, floating a 7 wood. Pulled it off last week, so confidence is sky high at the moment.

Perfect Sunday

Breakfast at Waffle House, hash browns smothered and peppered please. Relaxing round of golf gets me home in time for football. Settle in for Bears game and RedZone channel on second TV. A succulent Chinese meal for dinner, with a holiday on Monday so don’t have to get up for work the next day.

Depends on the situation, I very much want to win but can be pretty relaxed too. Beauty of my competitiveness I never carry it with me, even back in college and coaching, lose and move on to the next one. Probably not the most competitive in golf, as I’ve only been playing going on 4 years this next season, I want to win. But putting winning together can be tough! More than anything I get mad at myself when Im not playing well, which is weird because I do that all the time.

Walk. I’ll carry or use the push cart but I find I slow down and play better when I walk vs ride. Also justify golfing as exercising then! Will ride if it’s super hot, or sometimes just for fun.

Playing the 3 wood. If the stars all align as they do from time to time I’m hitting that club and sticking that green. Chances of executing the shot…below 50%. Realistically maybe a 20% chance, maybe?

Perfect Sunday?

Nice late spring or early summer day, sunny, comfortable breeze high around 75-80, low humidity. Get up and brush some dew with an early tee time, come home cook breakfast, spend the day with the family sodo some grilling etc. while listening to baseball on the radio, enjoy some ice cold beers.

When losing 10/10, when winning 4/10. It’s not really fun, and I don’t really get comfortable unless I’m 2 down.

  • Do you prefer to walk or ride? Why?

Generally prefer to walk. My home course is quite flat, and not all that long. It’s a perfect walk. I think competitive golf should be played walking (at least in non-tropical environments). Carts and Finn cycles are fun and have their place too though.

  • You’re 230 yards out to reach a par five in two. What club are you hitting and what do you think your chances are of executing the shot?

Probably a smooth 7W. I’m making bogey or better 90% of the time. :stuck_out_tongue:

  • Perfect Sunday

Crisp fall morning, early tee time (skins game). Wrap up the golf around 11:30 and get to beer #2 by kickoff. Head home around half time to start dinner prep. Sunday night pizza & beer or tacos & margs with the extended family. Some time sitting around the backyard fire pit before bed.

Some eyebrow raising answers about how competitive everyone here is! I love this from @bignanski and often steal it, I’m a deeply unserious golfer. Do I want to hit good shots and play well, absolutely. But I’m old, my competitive days are long gone. Between family and work, life is stressful enough to truly care about the number at the end of the hole. I’m way more interested in and focused on shooting the shit, trading stories and jokes, some light drinking and even lighter gambling. The only grinders I’m interested in are sandwiches. That being said, if shooting numbers are your jam and I like you, I’ll do everything in my power to get you there.

Walk if I’m solo or with my regular group. I sit way too much at a desk, I’m generally a restless person, and need to move to stay sane. A twilight 9 walking on Sunday night by myself is the best. But I’ll happily ride if it’s for the good of the group.

4w to about 220 and I’m perfectly comfortable chipping on for par.

Perfect Sunday is up with the little one and he and I go do something just the 2 of us, mini golf, driving range, trampoline park, skiing, sledding, out on the lake etc. Late breakfast at our favorite greasy spoon spot where the waitress knows him since he’s been born, he has a wall of receipt pictures hanging up, and a special box of powdered sugar with his name on it under the counter. We pick up Mrsdabomb and hit a brewery with our friends (yep kids in a brewery). Dinner at home and then I bail to walk a twilight 9.

With myself - 10; with others 1-8 depending on how much you’ve annoyed me and what the stakes are. Specific to golf, I very much want everyone in my group to play their best and if I win, great. If not, no shame in losing to someone playing well.

  • Do you prefer to walk or ride? Why?

Walk. It’s meditative for me, especially if I’m solo. It’s one of the few times I can just be silent and alone with my thoughts. Keeps me very even-keeled, so it’s no surprise that most of my best golf is played solo when I walk.

  • You’re 230 yards out to reach a par five in two. What club are you hitting and what do you think your chances are of executing the shot?

3i or 4i if I can run it up, 5w if I need to fly it there.

EDIT - forgot to add my chance…I’d say 65%

Perfect Sunday

Anything that gives me a positive, lifelong memory. Could be travel-related, an activity I participated in, time spent with my daughters, whatever; something that I”ll look back on fondly.
