I mean this is a hell of a two putt

It was a scary moment. I thought he was having a stroke. His playing partners didn’t seem concerned either.

I was just wondering… does @westerj12 have a mini driver?

It was such a good match. Wish I knew how to hit a Driver off of a Tee. Of the deck is no problem, but off a tee that’s a whole issue.

I played @cjnussbaum1219 in the round of 32 yesterday at Hyland. There was zero chance this match would live up to the hype it was generating in the First Flight chat – I knew I was up against a buzzsaw, and unfortunately my game peaked two months ago and hasn’t been sharp lately, so I entered the matchup feeling like a big underdog, just hoping to grind out a miracle.

No chance. Cody boat-raced me 4.5 & 4. Some quick highlights:

– Cody parred the first three holes while I made three straight bogeys to fall 3.5 down right out of the chute. He stretched his lead to 4.5 after 6 holes.

– I fought back and made a little surge, winning 7 with a par and 8 with a birdie to get back within 2.5, and I got a pop on 9. Felt like I had a good chance to be just 1.5 down at the turn. I made a solid par on 9, but Cody made a big-time birdie to halve the hole, curtailing my momentum a bit.

– He took 10 to go back to 3.5 up. Then we went to 11, and this was the turning point of the match. I made a comfy par from the middle of the fairway. Cody yanked his drive left into 5 fairway… then hit an absurd 8-iron over the trees onto the green. Then he made the 25-foot birdie putt to win the hole. That felt like the dagger.

– I made a mess of heinous No. 12, allowing Cody to go dormie at 5.5 up with 6 to play. I still kept fighting, won 13 and had a 10-foot birdie putt to win 14 but could not convert. We both made par, and he closed me out 4.5 & 4.

I certainly didn’t have my A game, really struggled to get off the tee, but I played fine – I finished net 1-over. And yes I got absolutely steamrolled because Cody is a beast. This was one of the best displays of lag putting I’ve seen in a long time — it got demoralizing to know that he was a lock to make at least a cozy two-putt even if he was 35 feet from the pin.

Good luck to the rest of the field against this menace!

Sadly I had to forfeit my match against @jbilo due to injury.

Going to come back hungrier for season 4.

Maybe I’ll see the final 4 this fall……

Hate that

Myself and @Mattgetz7894 got a lovely invite to come play Carolina GC for our Round of 32 match. I’ll spare everyone the gritty hole by hole details as it wasn’t the prettiest. I had the half stroke advantage.

Started off 7 straight holes without a push and no one going more than 1up. We finally found a push on the 8th and 9th before I took the 10th hole to go 2up.

On the 11th, Matt sprays his tee shot right, hits his second into the hazard (but playable), and dunks his third into a bunker. I’m fairway-green and thinking about going 3up before Matt decides to have a filthy up and down and watch me 3 putt (a theme of the day). We head to 12 still 2up and Matt sticks it to 3 ft for bird, and follows up with a win on the 13th to get it back to AS. That’s match play folks.

14 and 15 are pushes before we arrive to the long par 3 16th. Unfortunately for Matt the hosel rocket joined in for the round and I got up and down from the right side of the green to take the 1up lead. With the tiebreaker, I knew I just needed to push 17. We both ended up in trouble left off the tee but my bogey from there was enough to take the win 2.5&1.

Fun match on an awesome course. @bmasters, you’re next.

That sucks man! Never like to see anyone go out like that. Hope you recover quickly!

Very unfortunate of me on 17 to hit a 30 yard bunker shot 100 yards! 18 had a left pin that would have been a great finishing hole, however it never made it down to that. That’s probably the reason why I birdied it to finish. Best of luck in the next round!

Missed this part. Very glad it did not come down to the 18th.

Rumor has it your caddie was the key to victory

Had the pleasure of playing my match against @CrucialTaunt this past Saturday at Lane Tree Golf Club in Goldsboro, NC. My brother-in-law and one of his retired coaching buddies were there as witnesses. We played the one-ups and straight match play. I knew I would have to play well to overcome the 8 shots Mike was getting from me. Thankfully, I remembered how to play golf on the back 9 lol.

The front 9 was less than stellar for both of us and my .5 stroke advantage was quickly erased after 1. We both had a couple of big numbers on the front but thankfully I won one of them with a double lol. I managed to survive 4 of the strokes making the turn at 1.5 up.

Not exactly sure what happened to either of us on the back but my game showed up and Mike’s decided to take a break for a while. I proceeded by winning 4 of the next 5 holes securing the victory 4.5 U after 14. After the match was over I continued to hit the ball well and finished with a -2 back 9 which was a first for me. Finished out with one hell of a par on 18 to shoot 44/34. Had 4 birdies on the back nine which is more than I have had in an entire round…just crazy considering I felt like I was scrambling the whole time.

The fun did not stop after golf though…The moment we were all looking forward too…Dinner at the Beefmastor Inn in Wilson, NC. I HIGHLY recommend if you are in the area. The restaurant is small so bring some chairs and cold ones to enjoy while you wait outside.

@CrucialTaunt enjoyed it as always my friend!! We will need to run it back soon!

Rumors may be very true

Most of the round of 16 is settled (remaining 3 matches will be shared when determined) so lets get some of the matchups announced. This is back to a straight up match, so if you end tied after 18 please play extra holes until you can find a winner. I trust both players to agree on a fair way to handle. Also always good to have a marker or 2 along for the match.

In addition, we are getting to the end, please provide a writeup after each match! You will have until September 10th to get your match in

As always can check out the tracker here: 2023 CLC Matchplay Tracker - Google Sheets

My bad… Was going to quick. I did not mean to disparage the good name of the Pool Man himself.
