The CLC Matchplay - Season 5 is here! Launching at 1242!

@pluds26 and I played our Round of 8 match on Sunday at Bryan Park Players. We were officiated by @Hawk and @Nsandila.

We both played the 1up tees at 6500 yards. That meant I was getting 5 shots.

Hole 1 - 419 yards - Par 4
Pat pulled his drive in the trees on the left and was able to punch it out to back left of the green. I went fairway, green, 2 putt for par. Pat couldn’t get up and down. Ben 1up

Hole 2 - 460 yards - Par 5
I hit my drive on the left side of the fairway and had about 185 in. Pat’s ball waived at mine as it passed down the center of the fairway. I proceeded to hosel a 4 iron into the trees. I surprisingly had a shot and was able to knock it on the green. Pat’s approach came up short. We both 2 putt for pars. Ben 1up.

Hole 3 - 169 yards - Par 3
I am pin high just off the right. Pat sticks his to three feet. He makes his birdie putt. Tied.

Hole 4 - 510 yards - Par 5
My drive went into the left rough and Pat was once again a long ways ahead of me. My third shot is just on the front of the green. Pat’s second spins off the green to the front fringe. We both par but I am getting a shot. Ben 1up.

Hole 5 - 167 yards - Par 3
We both miss the green. I am able to get up and down for par and Pat takes bogey. Ben 2up.

Hole 6 - 363 yards - Par 4
Downhill par 4 that bends to the right. I hit my drive through the fairway and leave myself a hanging lie. Pat is in the fairway and hits his approach 15 feet left of the pin. I hit my approach to 5 feet right of the pin. Pat misses his putt and I make mine for birdie. Ben 3up.

Hole 7 - 362 yards - Par 4
Pat’s drive ends up in the left rough and mine finds the fairway. After a long delay of waiting for a father/son duo to play through we resume play. I hit my wedge to 10 feet pin high. Pat’s shot comes out of the rough low and hot. He ends up in the back bunker but makes a great up and down for par. I make my putt for birdie. Ben 4up.

Hole 8 - 362 yards - Par 4
Pat’s drive is in the fairway and mine is just through in the rough. My approach comes up short and Pat’s approach is just on. We both take pars. Ben 4up.

Hole 9 - 414 yards - Par 4
My drive ends up in the left bunker and the bend of the dogleg. Pat is in the fairway. The pin his back left and we both end up front right section of the green. I putt first and leave myself 4 feet. Pat hits a much better putt and the par putt is conceded. I know I am getting a shot and need to make this to win the hole. I hit the lip and the ball does a full 360 before dropping in. My par beats his par. Ben 5up.

Hole 10 - 373 yards - Par 4
My drive finds the fairway. Pat’s drive is on the backside of a bunker. He is left with an awkward stance. I knock a 6 iron to 12 feet to a back right pin. Pat hits to the middle of the green and is left with a lengthy putt. His first putt doesn’t break as expected and is left with 6 feet. I am in for par. Pat misses his par putt. Ben 6up.

Hole 11 - 176 yards - Par 3
The pin is in the front portion of the green in a bit of a bowl. I hit a 5 iron just passed the front right bunker but stay in the fringe. Pat finds the bunker. He hits a great bunker shot that somehow lands very soft and doesn’t take the slope. I leave my putt on the ow side. Pat makes his big breaking par putt. I miss my comebacker short. Ben 5up.

Hole 12 - 493 yards - Par 5
My drive is up the left side of the rough and I am asking for it to get down before the trees. Turns out I don’t hit it nearly long enough to reach the trees. Pat steps up and hits a bomb around the slight corner dead center of the fairway. I have 230 in, Pat has 150. I hit a 5wood on. Pat leaves his approach in the right greenside bunker. I three putt for par and Pat makes par as well. Ben 5up.

Hole 13 - 390 yards - Par 4
We both find the fairway with our tee shots. I hit first and find the green, 30 feet below the hole. Pat pulls his approach left of the green. He hits a very nice chip on to about 8 feet. I putt first and leave it about 4 feet short. Pat makes his par putt for a great up and down. I am getting a shot this hole so I need to make it to win the hole and the match. Thankfully the putt found the bottom of the cup and I was able to close out the match 6&5.

I had a great time with everyone. It was great reminiscing with Pat on some shared experiences we’ve had.

When a guy places the round of his life, you just have to tip your cap. Absolute stripe show out of @BCates that was a pleasure to watch. All I knew was the dangerous 7 iron bump and run coming in and the guy doesn’t miss a green until the 8th.

Back to back quarterfinals is fun, but leaves an awfully sour taste considering where the final 4’s have/are being played.

Back to back final 4’s for @BCates and the lethal bump and run game. Love to see it!

@needforspieth and I played our round of 8 match at Goodyear club in Danville,VA on a beautiful afternoon. I was getting 5 strokes. The weather was perfect and the course was dynamic. Our golf games were neither of those things. I am not going to detail hole by hole because NFS and I have chosen to apply the rule “what happens on the course stays on the course”.

I started out okay with a routine par on the first to take the hole and go 1 up.

Hole 2 was the first pop. Hole halved with a bogey for me and a par for NFS.

Hole 3 was my second pop. Both of us had bogeys but my pop meant I went 2 up.

Hole 4 was my 3rd pop (yes, its a tough start). I win the hole with a net bird to go 3 up.

From there there was a little back and forth but neither one of us really going low. If I remember correctly I won 6 and lost 7. I won 9 to make the turn at 4 up.

Back 9 golf got worse. I won 10 and then to go 5 up. There was some winning by both of us on the next few holes. The lead never got more than 5 and was never less than 4 on the back. Eventually, NFS ran out of holes and the match ended with a 5 and 4 victory for me.

It was a great day with great company. I am fortunate to get NFS on a day when his driver was failing him. The biggest difference in the match was that I kept the ball in play and NFS had to take penalty strokes.

Onto the final 4!

I just like golf courses. I’m a lover not a hater Boat.

Shout out to @Swing_hard_and_hope and @CrucialTaunt for putting together a great day for the final 4 at midpines. It was unfortunate that there was a frost delay and pace was atrocious. We were only able to get the semis in.
There was an amazing tee gift for the 4 participants. A custom scorecard holder. Also the vibes provided from the pacers and other CLC members was off the chart.
I want to personally thank @Harper for providing coverage and positivity during the day.

The finals will be very fun next week between myself and nannerman (rip)

CLC Matchplay Recap

Friends, we have crowned a champion! @grizzly224

Some fun facts and figures from the year

  • 71 competitors signed up
  • 167 matches played
  • Over 70 courses
  • Tracker sheet if you are interested

More importantly wanted to give some transparent accounting here 71 competitors, $25 each = $1775

  • $938 = Mid Pines final 4 round + lodging + some post round beers
  • $100 = Salisbury finals match + some credit for the final competitors
  • $415 = Custom Scorecard holders for final 4 competitors (pictured above)
  • $44 = Champ Champagne
  • $70 = Trophy Construction materials

So for those keeping track at home leaves us with $208 left over.

I plan to contact a trophy shop here to try and get some custom nameplates made for the trophy and see where that leaves us on the money. I would guess we have about $150 leftover that I will plan to donate to the First Tee of the Triangle unless anyone has clever ideas I am not thinking of.

Was another great year being y’alls Matchplay Commissioner. Looking forward to 2023! As always let me know if you have any recommendations, feedback, comments, etc.
