Brilliant!

Needless to say, I folded like a cheap lawn chair down the stretch. It was a classy match though, with both of us beating our hcp by a couple of shots. Kudos Mr. Card, if you play like you did against me, I’d put my money on you the rest of the way.

@bmasters - the playlist is just a Pandora channel for Kaleo. I’ve found it to be a nice mix of vibey tunes, perfect for a 4-hour walk with friends.

Good luck to the rest of you and thanks again to @Swing_hard_and_hope for organizing the match play event!

Another match in the books as @BCates and I had our rematch from pod play on Saturday afternoon. We played the pod play match at Oak Hollow in High Point, a Pete Dye design. It was only fitting that we play this match at another Pete Dye course, at The Cardinal in Greensboro. I’ll note now that the super had the pins in some diabolical spots.

BCates definitely with more experience here as it was my first time playing the course, but I was getting 12 pops and feeling pretty decent about my game. We play the 1 ups, 6493 yards, par 71 accompanied by @Are_you_double_D

Hole 1: I’m popping. BCates hits his left which is close to dead on this hole. I’m left but short of a fairway bunker and sitting pretty. He chops it out and then onto the green, 2 putts for 5. Ball slightly above my feet but PW in and I hit it good, about 15 feet left. 2 putts for 4 for 3. 1 UP.

Hole 2: 160 yard par 3, elevated tee shot, backish pin. I hit about as good as an 8 iron as I can. Keep the ā€œoh be so goodā€ to myself and thank god cause it is on the green but 40 feet short. BCates hits on the green about 25-30 feet. I roll one up pretty decently close for the lag distance. BCates two-putts for par, I miss for par and make 4. ALL SQUARE.

Hole 3: Popping. Short par 4, about 289 yards. BCates hits in the left rough but fine. I pure a driving iron down the middle. We’re both on in 2. First putt a joke of a read from me leaving about 15 feet remaining. He 2 putts for a comfy 4. I miss the par putt and halve the hole with another 3 putt bogey. ALL SQUARE

Hole 4: 524 par 5, a bit dogleg right. BCates right down the middle. I’m a bit left, with some branches affecting the next shot and a creek down the right side. Punchy 4 iron down the fairway and he hits it left rough and within wedge distance. Wind in the face I hit a 90% 8-iron and it barely gets over the front bunker but puttable right on the fringe. He sticks it tight. I get my birdie putt close and he drains the birdie, which beats my par. 1 DOWN.

Hole 5: Popping. Long par 4, 429 yards. BCates hitting 3 wood all day off the tee and feeling it. I’m about the same distance with driver. I’m hit right into the wood chips and am able to get a 4 iron close to the front. Comfy par for BCates and I make 5 for 4. 1 DOWN

Hole 6: Popping. Narrow par 4 but only 362 yards. BCates down the middle. I smoke a power fade to the same distance as his 3-wood but I’m feeling good. Both on in 2. I 3 putt again (5 for 4) and he make par. This is 3 GIR’s that I’ve 3 putted. Awesome. 1 DOWN.

Hole 7: Popping. 382 yard par 4 with a bit of an uphill approach. BCates in good position off the tee. I fan it a bit right into a creek. Drop and hit short of green (stymied by a tree). Pitch up a bit long and putt to 10 feet. Comfy par for BCates. I’m out of the hole but sink a sick 10 foot super sketchy downhill putt for 6 (for 5). 2 DOWN.

Hole 8: 172 yard par 3 elevated tee shot. On 2 tee we saw a guy smother one left onto that tee box. BCates short right and possible embedded against a railroad tie. I smother the f out of a 6 iron over the 2 tee box. Lost ball I’m in my pocket. BCates wins the hole with double. 3 DOWN.

Hole 9: Popping. 405 par 4. BCates down the left side of the fairway through a fun little chute of a tee shot. I smoke one down the middle. He does right of the green into a collection area. Wind picks up as I go to hit, I back off, switch from 8 to 9 iron, and hit it to 15 feet or so. He’s next to a drainage grate but a drop could be a worse lie. He chips it in!!! I’m not shocked. I miss the birdie putt and make 4 for 3 to halve but it felt like a loss. We turn and I’m 3 DOWN.

Hole 10: Popping. 477 par 5. Both in fairway. I hit right short behind some pot bunkers. He goes left and we can’t find it. I hit a pitch to 12 feet and drain the birdie. Let’s f’ing go. 2 DOWN.

Hole 11: Downhill 346 par 4. Both in fairway. I’ll note I smoked my driving iron again on this one. That thing is like having cheat codes. Both on with 18-20 footers. Between us and @Are_you_double_D we miss our birdie putts by 3 inches total. All make par. 2 DOWN.

Hole 12: Popping. 196 par 3 into the wind claimed to be the hardest par 3 ever designed by Pete Dye. Over water and water left. Pin left. Bunkers and crap and a creek right. I’m bail the f out right. BCates into a bunker on the right. I barely have a shot and chop out of the shit into a bunker. He blades one into the water! Got a chance. Nope. Next one stays in bunker. Next one gets lodged in the lip of the bunker. Take unplayable. Blade next one into water. He wins with triple. 3 DOWN.

Hole 13: 400 yard par 4. He’s in the fairway. I smoke one feeling good after shaking off the last hole. He chunks the approach and then is on and 2 putts for 5. I’m just short of the green, can’t get up and down. Halve with bogey. 3 DOWN.

5 holes to play, 3 down but popping on 4 of the 5. Maybe a chance.

Hole 14: Popping. 418 par 4. I hit into the creek down the right side. He goes OB left. I drop and pure a 4 iron, I mean so good out of the rough short of the green. Pitch and 2 putts for 6 (for 5). He goes right of the green after dropping in fairway., makes triple. 2 DOWN.

Hole 15: Popping. 547 par 5. I’m not reaching this in 2 but again, hit it right and into the creek running alongside the hole. He’s left not great but in a fine spot for such a long hole. I drop and hit down the fairway. Thin a 4 iron approach and it barely clears the creek but we’re in business. He hits his 3rd long and right. Pitch and 2 putts and I’m in for 7 (for 6). He pitches over the green, then left/off the green. Makes triple. 1 DOWN.

Hole 16. 170 par 3 playing 180 to the pin. I hit the 5 iron of the year right on the shelf in the middle of the green, trickles towards the hole about 20 feet away. BCates hits it good but airmails the green. I make par and he can’t get up and down. ALL SQUARE.

Hole 17: Popping. 402 par 4 big uphill approach. I’m popping here and on 18, I’m feeling good but worried about the last few drives going right. I’m pipe one, a little draw one it. I exaggerate the early tee pick up getting really saucy. Why wouldn’t I? It kicks left into the fairway bunker. FUCK. He goes just short of the same bunker but as a lefty is in prime shape. I hit PW and still hit the lip, then smother an 8 iron to the back left of the green. He is on. I’m thinking just halve the hole. I have like 50 feet and hit a garbage ass putt about 8 feet left of hole. Miss the next one. 3 putts for 7 (for 6) and he makes par. 1 DOWN.

Hole 18: Popping. Let’s go. 412 par 4. He goes left into the rough but not dead. I hit it down the pipe with a little power fade action. I’m thinking playoff. He hits it long but on the green. I have 7 iron in and feeling good with how I’ve been hitting the irons most of the day. I go right of the greenside bunkers. I’m short-sided. NOT CLUTCH. I delicately pitch 15 feet past the hole. Ok we have a shot. He hits it decently short and missed the next one just past the hole, just past easy gimme range. To tie the match, I leave the 15 footer 5 feet short, It was downhill, WTF. Choking hard. Need the next one. Nope it misses by a ball right. Make the next for 6 for 5. He sinks the next one for bogey. Halve.

Match to @BCates 1 UP.

Overall a super fun match and a valiant comeback (with some help from @BCates to make it interesting). Some decent ball striking. A few wayward drives into the shit and some woeful putting. Had a blast and the company and course were top notch. Hate to be out of it but loved the tourney and look forward to tracking the other matches as they take place.

Great work on the write-ups! Thanks for doing those folks.

Looks like the last 2 in the sweet 16 to get the match done are @stupidflanders and @EFreeCHS

We got rained out last Thursday so we’re trying again this Thursday. Hopefully the weather holds!

I defeated stupidflanders 5&4 in our waterlogged rematch yesterday at nifty course here in the Lowcountry. My meteorological skills apparently need some fine tuning as I left all rain gear at home. Another great day on the course nonetheless with good company.

Elite Eight Update

Congrats to our truly Elite. Look how far we have come since the start of this thing back in June. What started as just a simple idea with 64 people all over the Carolinas has spread and really created something special. In about a month from today we will CROWN a CLC Matchplay Champion. These 8 have already showed up and showed out, and I for one am very proud to see them reach this far in the competition. But now the pressure gets dialed up.

As always, we encourage you to pick some great locations for these matches (don’t let Andy trick you into playing #2) and getting some friends to join along to referee / journal the experience. You have until October 14th to get these done, because then we are onto the Final Match Day. And of course, remember to have fun.

Dates / Details

Elite 8

  • September 21 - October 14th
  • You will have a little over 3 weeks to play your match, if not work with the commish to determine who will advance (please don’t let it come to that).

Final 4

  • Hosted for a 36 hole matchplay day at Forest Creek Golf Club, this will be on either 10/15, 10/16, or 10/17 based on availability of the 4 competitors and our host, @Cody .

The Play

  • Full handicaps will be used
  • Competitors can choose which tee they would like to play from during competition, but we all know it makes it a little better if both competitors play from the same tee
  • An 18 hole match is suggested, but if needed for time purposes and agreed on by both competitors a 9 hole match will be allowed.

The Points

Knockout Stage

  • Elite 8 and Final 4 will no longer give competitors an advantage and will be a simple 18 hole match to determine the winner. This can not end in a tie, but is on the competitors to determine their ā€œtiebreakā€ before the round. If you can not make your match happen in the 3 weeks we will work together to come up with a plan.

All of these details about matches can be found in the google sheet here.

Looking for some CLC assistance on this one - where should @EFreeCHS meet to play? Going to have to be the weekend ahead of the finals for both of us (travel and it turns out my fiance doesn’t want to change our wedding plans again) and ideally is somewhat equidistant between the triangle and Charleston.

Not familiar with the golf scene around Florence, SC but that is pretty similar distances for both of you.

FCC, Traces, CC of SC, Olde English all look promising

Maybe something in the NC/SC state line area around the beaches, such as Thistle, Meadowlands, or Farmstead (depending when it closes). Only thing I know of somewhat inland but not terribly far from I-95 is Cheraw State Park GC.
