Been a few years since I did it, but the Great Dane at Hilldale runs a shuttle to/from the game, so you end up with a bunch of people there before and after, but nothing crazy during it. Big beer hall that likely won’t be as crowded as the one by the Capitol.
This is a good choice. If you get a chance, walk up Breese Terrace before the game to see what the kidz are doing these days for tailgating. I’d recommend staying somewhere on Regent for the game (JBT is a sentimental fav but there are bigger ones now like Sconnie & Luckys) but it might be tough to sit down most places. If sitting is your thing, I second Chris’s rec of Great Dane Hilldale or even the Fitchburg location although its a bit more of a drive.
A low key option (that is tiny, so if your group is more than 4, prob pass) is the Village Bar near Glenway - bonus you can see what they are doing to the course.
I noticed this the other day when looking at the satellite view of “old” Glenway.
Madison rocks.
I’m old school but I always enjoy watching the game at State Street Brats and then wandering around State St. after.
Hopefully going to treat myself to playing a course somewhat nearby that I haven’t played in years. Live in the Milwaukee area. I’ve narrowed it down to Eagle Springs and Washington County. Which one should I pick? Are there any other contenders I should consider?
I love this place. Gotta have you expectations appropriately set, but it’s a lot of fun.
Washington County is always a good bang for the buck.
@hellofriends I concur with this.
Check out Lac La Belle if it’s been awhile since you’ve been back.
Ended up going to Eagle Springs and loved it
Used to live 30 seconds from Eagle Springs. What a fun place to play.
Current UW student here. Agree with what @chrisisoutrunning and @KC_Badger said. Obviously can’t go wrong with State Street, but I personally think the vibes are the best as you get closest to the stadium. I think staying near Regent/checking out Breese would be the best option.
What courses did you guys play this year that pleasantly surprised you? Possibly first time playing there or playing it after a hiatus. Topic came to mind because I played Thornberry Creek for the first time in 4 or 5 years and loved it. Played all 27 holes for $60 and both courses were in great shape. The course itself is pretty boilerplate with the routing and design but still an enjoyable day at a good price.
I’ve got 2, Wild Ridge in Eau Claire and Wild Rock in Wisconsin Dells.
Cumberland Golf Club (s/o @Battisstatus for the rec). The whole vibe is just really good. Super fun layout, easy to walk (if that’s your thing, it’s ours), cheap, great bar. Total package for a northwoods course. We were supposed to play a couple of other places on our trip but ended up playing Cumberland 3-4 days in a row because it was so fun. Highly recommend if you end up in that part of the state.
Edit to add: also played Turtleback on that trip and frankly, it didn’t live up to the hype.
Forgot I played Big Fish for the first time this summer as well, very cool course and might be the best bargain in the state non-Lawsonia division
I’m so bummed I didn’t get to play there this October. The Colors are amazing out there and the seasonal rate cannot be beat. The staff are wonderful also!
Country Club Estates in Fontana.
Great 9-hole course, Tom Bendelow design. Great land movement and fun greens.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Woodlands course at Lawsonia.
