Roll Call: Oklahoma "The Supercell"

Roman Nose is an acid trip.

I’m disturbed by your Twin Hills ranking. Its arguably a top 5 course in the state, top 10 at the worst. You have it at 15, which doesn’t include the courses you haven’t played (Oak Tree East, West, Southern Hills, Territory etc).

Would love to hear more on how Twin gets ranked behind Fairfax and Kickingbird.

List of top 15 is the courses I have played.

I haven’t played Oak Tree East, West, Southern Hills, or Territory yet. (I was kinda confused on what you were saying, “which doesn’t include the courses you haven’t played”) I might just be an idiot. Sorry about that.

But,
I have seen Twin twice, maybe I caught it on 2 bad occasions, greens were in bad shape and I wasn’t a fan of it, compared to the other 14 on my list.

KBird has the 2nd best bunkers in the central OK area behind OCGCC. Great layout and great greens.

Fairfax’s layout is so good… such a long and good course. So very hard holes.

The two times I played Twin the longest iron I can recall having into a par 4 was a PW.

Maybe I just need to go play it again.

Yeah, Winfield CC is def an old school track with those tiny sloped greens. I haven’t played there in prob 15 years. The greens remind me of one of my favorite little muni’s Wellington (which I see you’ve played).

I’ve played all of those except Cottonwood, Salina CC, The Deuce and The National. The KC courses we played in college were Ironhorse, Sunflower Hills and Dubs Dread (while it snowed). My fav college tournament was at Colbert Hills. My least favorite was at The Highlands (now named Crazy Horse)…we heard locals say it was harder than Prairie Dunes and I believe it, although I’ve never played PD. That’s awesome the course is hosting a tournament for you guys! I think I’d rather play it as a casual round than a tournament round as I never handled the pressure of tournament golf well. I remember getting my ass handed to me at Buffalo Dunes as well.

My favorite course out of the ones you listed is Sand Creek Station.

Twin Hills stood out to me as well. I’ve never played it, but have heard a lot of positive things and numerous say it’s their favorite out of the OKC metro courses. Maybe not “better” than Oak Tree National, but it’s a more enjoyable round at Twin is how I’ve heard it qualified.

Wellington has the best golf community I have ever seen. The ‘big game’ every Saturday is too good.

I haven’t played Colbert yet but I need to get out there.

And I do not believe I would ever get the chance to play Prairie as a casual round, sadly. So I will happily take the tournament chance even though I completely agree about the extra pressure.

Also, Buffalo and Sand Creek are both awesome tracks.

I am curious on what y’alls top 15 would look like

You nailed it. When I retire, I hope to find a course with as good of a golf community as Wellington.

Fair enough, its all subjective I suppose.

What I meant was that Twin is probably a top 5/10 course in the state. You have them at 15th based on where you’ve played, meaning that if you were fortunate enough to hit them all, I’m thinking you’d have them at like… 30? Or lower? And that’s just surprising.

Everyone time I’ve been out there its been super well conditioned. Its not long by any means, but I think thats a good thing. More than most Maxwell’s, you can actually see his finger prints out there.

I gotcha, I guess those 14 listed before it had more of an impression on me. I do like short courses but every once in awhile I enjoy a long 4, such as #10 at Gaillardia, sometimes plays a driver, 4 iron.

I’ve only lived here three years and was a member at Surrey Hills (rented house next to the course) the first year and The Greens the second year, so I’m not sure I’ve even played 15 courses. Those two would be at the bottom of my list though haha. I haven’t played any at Oak Tree, any in the Tulsa area and I’ve heard Enid has a good course or two. I’ve played Karsten a couple of times and while the vibe/decor/detail is excellent and the conditioning is second to none, I wasn’t overly impressed with the course design. A couple memorable holes, but nothing that has me dying to go back for. From the talk I hear from locals, I’m really looking forward to playing Jimmie Austin and Twin the most (and obv Southern Hills).

Based on where I’ve played: (haven’t played Patriot)

  1. Southern Hills
  2. Karsten Creek
  3. Oak Tree National
  4. OKC GCC
  5. Twin Hills
  6. The Oaks
  7. Tulsa Country Club
  8. Oak Tree East
  9. Oak Tree West
  10. Jimmie Austin
  11. Gaillardia
  12. Dornick
  13. Cedar Ridge
  14. Quail Creek
  15. Shangri La

Granted I haven’t played a few of these in like 10-15 years so I don’t really trust my own rankings.

I agree about Karsten. Conditioning there is incredible. Sometimes the ball doesn’t stop on the greens on certain pins. You can lose a ball on any shot on any piece of the property.

If you get the chance, Belmar is incredible.

I worked at OCGCC my college freshman summer and sophomore summer, and gaillardia my junior summer, I’d love to hear your takes on those. Please tell me you’ve had the strawberry drink at OCGCC at the shack on #10.

I need to get on Jimmie, Shangri La and Southern

I haven’t done this in a while, but I’ll try to do a top 15 I’ve played.

  1. Pasatiempo
  2. Streamsong Black
  3. River Forest (hidden gem outside ATL)
  4. Sweetens Cove
  5. Univ. of Michigan
  6. Streamsong Red
  7. TPC Sawgrass
  8. Whistling Straits - Irish
  9. Whistling Straits - Straits
  10. Ravisloe CC
  11. Presidio
  12. Blackwolf Run - River
  13. Blackwolf Run - Meadows
  14. East Lake
  15. TPC Harding Park

The Greens might be the worst designed golf course in the state.

Oakwood is good, private of course, but probably not hard too get on. Meadowbrook is probably more in line with what you would expect for a public course in Enid America.

I’ve played Belmar once and really want to go back. It’s so hard to judge a course only playing it once or twice. I’m curious about Gaillardia. I haven’t been out there…what did you like about it?

We would still be members out there if the course design didn’t suck so bad. Only reason we left. Dog leg left. Dog leg left. Dog leg left.

I’ve only played Sweetens one day (four trips around), but I probably have that place burned in my brain more than any other course. It’s so easy to remember all the holes. And like everyone says, it could be the most FUN course you ever play.

#3, #14, and #17

I still don’t know what to hit off of 14 from the blues. You kind of just have to hit something 200, hope it finds the narrow fairway, and then you have 225 in. Or you could duck hook a driver, or launch it into the other fairway.

17 is similar, but at least its not a long hole.

At least on #3 you have the option of taking it over that poor bastard’s trampoline.

Long, hard Par 3’s are not my shit. I do love reachable par 5’s. If you didn’t notice a theme in my rankings, I like short courses with crazy greens. I like your description of the membership though and I’m not that concerned with the food - if the course it good, I’ll take a hot dog at the turn and go eat at Chick-N-Beer after the round.
