As someone who hits a cut off the tee and can miss way right. When I saw my first hole for the am qualifier was 10 2 years ago I had a LOT of time to think about the tee shot with OB looming.
Yeah, your assessment of Double Eagle is spot on. Course is really good, the front 9 can be tight in places and the back 9āis much more open.
The vibes out do the course though and Jās Hooch and Hoās (tiki bar) is so much fun!
Iāll go play there every chance I get!
Including 15 yards in front of the tee box, which somehow can turn into a lost ballā¦
For me DE is 4th of the Cbus big 4 by a long margin. Place was impeccably manicured and had some nice holes, 17 is great, but i didnāt find much of it that special. Wasnāt particularly challenging, especially of the tee, which is probably what they were going for. With that being said i would never say no to playing there, itās certainly a special day with the whole vibe of the place.
Agree with @Creags York is underrated and fun. CCC is a real treat. I know it gets a lot of hate but i enjoy Scarlet. Scioto and TGC are a close 1-2 of places Iāve played, could play either of them every day.
Also Dayton CC was a plesant surprise this summer. That place could be super sick with the right work done.
Double Eagle and Scioto are the two at the top of my list to play in Central Ohio.
I live very close to Double Eagle so if anyone has the hookup Iād love to tag along to there or Scioto! I can reciprocate at Northstar just down the road (obviously not comparable but itās the best I can do lol)
Talking to the friend whoās a member at Inverness apparently they added some bunkering to the course, and some length on certain holes too. I need to bother her to get out again.
Can confirm. Was out there for the Inverness Intercollegiate and some of the holes are stupor long from the back tees now.
Well from the championship tees was always insane. I think it was 7700 yds? We played the silvers when I was there which was a substantial test, and the championship tees were soooooo far back.
Their goal is to play 8000+ in an attempt to host a menās major again. Totally makes sense to spend millions to do that rather than roll back the ball.
The issue for them hosting a menās major isnāt the course. Itās the accomodations and local infrastructure, from the people Iāve talked to.
Avg PGA course length is only 7200 or so iirc.
Havenāt seen anyone mention the Virtues. Has it gone downhill?
No, itās in good shape. We played it this summer, and two falls ago. Itās just not⦠Camargo. Or even close.
Have you heard if they are doing work? Thought I heard at one point they had a restoration on the table but membership wasnāt really into it.
Iād like to see DCC again. I played there once in the fall and I think it took us roughly 20 hours to play because the other guys in my group wouldnāt stop looking for balls. It was the worst fall golf day of my life and I refuse to judge DCC off of it
Iāve talked to the super a few times, yes they have a plan and as you say they are trying to get the membership on board to fork over the money. Would love to see it spruced up, some pretty cool holes, they are pretty landlocked so adding much distance really isnāt in the cards. Great view out of the back of the clubhouse and patio too
Man, maybe the number one take away I get from this convo is that I need better friends. Iāve only played like 3 places mentioned here. And 2 of those were because of people on this board.
I really like Virtues and itād definitely be in my personally played top 10, along with The Scarlet Course⦠both of which get a lot of shit around here.
However, it doesnāt quite deliver enough to get into my top 5.
All of the cool places Iāve seen or played have been because of the Refuge. This place is amazing for that.
Golf Mag released their āTop 100 Public Golfā list and Ohio isā¦oof.
Firestone South is #53 and that is it for the Buckeye State.
Though, Harbour Town is #12 so thatās like half a point for being Ohioās southern capital.
