Coming in from Dallas Sept. 11th and 12th and looking to play a few rounds while my wife is at a work conference – probably 36 Saturday and 18 Sunday. Never been to Nashville before but from reading this thread, it looks like these are the must-plays (in no order):
Hermitage (General’s Retreat and Presidents Reserve)
Greystone
Montgomery Bell State Park
McCabe
Henry Horton
Sewanee (willing to make the drive)
Sounds like the MBSP/Greystone combo is popular or staying put at Hermitage for 36. Would probably try to get out to Sewanee (if possible) on Sunday since it’d be a drive. Appreciate any recommendations and would also be great to meet some refugees if anyone is interested in playing either day!
Harpeth Hills should be near the top of your list if you are playing in town. A Golden hour round there can be pretty great.
If you are willing to drive to Sewanee then that is the answer in my mind. It’s really, really good. Much more memorable that the others on your list. It’s only 9 holes but has two sets of tees so a hole may play as a Par 4 one loop and a Par 5 the next.
I think Sweetens is having their Olympics tournament around that time. It’s supposed to be a good time and may be worth altering your travel if you can make that work.
Of all of those, you will remember Sewanee the most. Stunning views and the best architecture of the bunch plus an outstanding staff and decent on site restaurant.
NLU Crew, if anyone needs someone to play with in the area let’s do it. 28 and typically shoot around an 80- 90. Love going out to Greystone, 12 Stones, and Hermitage. Like Nashville National, Ted Rhodes, McCabe and Riverside for the cheap. Can play weekends and weekday afternoon.
Oh yeah, that’s the one. When we played the par 3 (number 3) they put the pin on this back shelf that was like impossible to get to. Like a total joke. There is a wild ass alps hole (coming back towards the clubhouse) and some other stuff. The main drag about that course is that the greens have all shrunk to like 1/2 their original size. I think with some TLC and some widening it could be decent but in its current state I don’t think it is worth the drive from Nashville.
I played it a good bit roughly a year ago since tee times were easy to come by and pace of play was good. Also, really nice staff that made me feel welcome the first time I came and seemed to really want to improve the course. But it’s gotten much busier (slower), and some of the holes are just ridiculous. You talked about a back pin on #3, but a front pin is just as stupid. They put it in that tiny dish at the front, and if you are even five feet past, your putt is rolling off the front. Literally impossible.
Back when NNGL was ‘Through the Green,’ it was an awesome gem. Then it turned to Highland Rim (new ownership, minimal changes) and it was okay, just declined in condition over time. The new owners calling it Nashville National seem to be trying to keep it a nice spot to go play, but you’ve gotta get past the length of the course and a few quirky holes/greens. It’s off in the middle of nowhere (near my parent’s house is only reason I occasionally get by there), so they’re trying to get pull from Nashville to Joelton and compete with the Legacy and some other nicer courses in the surrounding areas of Nashville.
Yeah a front pin is miserable on that hole. Walking off with a bogey seems like a win when the pin is like that. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve cursed that green many times
Anyone interested in playing next Saturday? Will be coming in from Dallas and would be great to play with some locals. Thinking Harpeth based on y’all’s feedback from a few weeks ago!
Edit: nvm on Harpeth. Looks like they’ve got a tournament.
Playing Lookout Mountain Club on September 23 at 2pm. Was a foursome I bought through a charity. Have 3 spots open if anyone is interested. $175 includes cart
Damn…If I didn’t have Pilgrimage tickets and people coming in town I would totally be all over that. I have been trying to figure a way onto that course for some time now…
Taking a golf day off work so I have the whole day and can drive anywhere. I have never played Henry Horton and numerous posters here rave about it so I am weighing if I want to go to Henry Horton for the first time or go back to Greystone since I rarely have the time to drive out to Dickson and play. Two questions about HH (1) is it walkable? (I would consider Harpeth Hills an average walk) and (2) how is the pace out there?
1 - I’ve never walked it but it should be a pretty good course to walk. There are a couple climbs caused by a creek bed (holes 6 and 9 for sure) but shouldn’t be many long walks from green to tee. I’d say it’s very similar to Harpeth.
2 - I’ve never really played it when it was super busy.
If I had 10 rounds to split between HH and Greystone, I would play 11 rounds at HH.
