I just played the 9 hole Elk Rapids Golf Club Memorial Day weekend and really liked it. Also agree about Sundance, but I really want to play the Torch course now too.
I’ve been out at treetops all day so I’m just seeing this now, but everyone else nailed it. It was an absolute blast and with all the food and drinks and merch I gotta say it’s worth every penny. Also got the mill river pricing in the pro shop so that got a little loose but was great. I definitely won’t miss one going forward and would try to add another fried egg event to my rotation if they’re all this good
This is a bit last minute but wondering if I might get some suggestions here. Later today I am driving from Ann Arbor to Boyne Highlands for the weekend. I might get out of work in time to squeeze in a twilight round on the way up. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions along that route - let’s say roughly north of Lansing off 127 or off 75 north of Grayling. It’s just me and my wife (beginner) so looking for something a little easier than, say, Buck’s Run in Mt Pleasant. Thought about hitting up the par 3 at Forest Dunes but it sounds like it’s pretty packed. Any lesser known places to check out? Something the Strapped boys might enjoy?
I think the Dream/ Nightmare are usually the go to courses on that route.
If you want to just get all of the way up there and then play, I remember liking Hidden River. Looks like $59 twilight rate (4pm). Chestnut Valley is up there too. It’s ok but not something I would go out of my way to play. Seems to be about the same price as Hidden River, so I’d choose HR first.
Looking for dinner recs around these areas:
Kingsley Club
Forest Dunes
Traverse City
Thanks bebs
It might not get you far enough north for a twilight round, but I’ve always enjoyed the Emerald in St. Johns. Haven’t played it in a few years, but it is a fun place - usually has good greens.
The other is Hidden River in Brutus if you want to get farther north. It’s an excellent, excellent place.
Thanks. The Emerald was one of the first that came to mind but I called and it sounds like it’s a big league night tonight. Eagle Glen in Farwell is designed by the same designer (Mattews) and is a lot of fun as well.
I took “Golf as a Business Tool” there while at State. I can’t explain why it was a 3 credit Broad elective or why it was all the way up there but it was the easiest 4 ever. The course is solid though.
did someone say Matthews…https://www.instagram.com/jerrymatthewsburner/
Lol, some good stuff there. That has to be the most oddly specific burner account out there.
I standby my recommendations of both The Emerald and Eagle Glen though, both are perfect for a fun twilight round!
Agree with Dream / Nightmare. Have also heard The Fortress in Frankenmuth is a hidden gem with pure greens
I was going to suggest the Fortress but I remember it being kind of tight with heather when I played it in high school. I’d be terrified to take my wife there.
Had my SIL put together a list of Traverse City places for a friend a couple weeks ago, so I’ll share it.
TC Brunch - Town Plaza, Brasserie Amie, Omelette Shop
TC Nice Dinner - Stella, Pepenero, Boathouse, Cook’s House, Brasserie Amie
TC Casual Dinner / Lunch - 7 Monks, North Peak, Rare Bird, Taproot
Old Mission Best Wineries - Maru, Bonobo, Chateau Chantal, Bower’s Harbor
Leelanua Best Wineries - Sutton’s Bay Ciders, L Maybe, Blustone, Ciccone
I like the Fortress. Conditions are usually quite good, it isn’t overly penal…EXCEPT for the 13th hole.
The 13th hole is arguably one of the biggest abominations in all of golf. 450 yard par 4 that plays into the prevailing wind with water and a speed slot cart path down the right side to send your ball further into the water for a slicer. This isn’t a Florida swamp course. No reason to put those two ponds there.
Kiss.My.Ass Dick Nugent.
In addition to @curtv’s list above, Little Fleet is pretty good if you’re with a group of people with varying tastes. It’s a mostly outdoor spot with a walk up taco place, and there are four or five other food trucks and a bar. Probably has live music in the summer as well. Right across the street from Cook’s House (which is really, really good, but tough to get reservations).
Glad you’re going up to the Highlands. I worked there for many years (Big Randy also put in a summer, I think) and love the vibe. Just can’t beat it for value and four courses on property, along with tons of family stuff, if that applies. Ziplining, bike trails, pools, free little short course built into the bottom of the ski hills, horseback riding, plus Lake MIchigan beach a couple miles away.
Also in TC for a great burger/fries place, check out Slabtown Burgers. Incredible.
Hi Everyone. Long time lurker, big golfer and NLU fan. If anyone is trying to get out in the Ann Arbor area, let me know! Leslie Park and the UM Blue course are my favorites in the area, but I’ll play anywhere. Cheers!
I’m in A2. UMGC is my regular course. Been looking to get back out to Leslie, only played once a long time. I’m pretty booked through June but definitely down to play after that.
