Roll Call: Massachusetts

Cross-posting from discord

Anyone have thoughts on the courses in the Hanover area? Seeing Carter CC, Montcalm, Quechee, and Woodstock CC upon a quick google maps search. Light research suggests that Carter is muni-vibes, Quechee is spendy/private, and that Montcalm and woodstock fall somewhere in the middle on the private-ness and nice-ness scale

I really like Woodstock though feelings are mixed on it. Montcalm is on the verge of going back to private so this year might be the last year to play there. I am also incredibly biased but Hooper is an easy 45 minute drive down I91 from Hanover.

Can also post this on NH/VT roll call and some folks might have some more suggestions as well.

Hi all,

I’m a new Nest member and Mass resident looking to expand my network of playing partners. I’m in the Waltham area but play all over the state (Merrimack Valley, South Shore etc). Have played somewhat competitively in the past but mainly recreational these days (playing to around a 10 HCP). Avid Boston sports fan as well. Just looking to branch out and meet some new people to play with and share the same passion for the game. If there are any other channels I should be following for open tee times etc, please let me know. Hope to see some of you out there on the course this year!

A month late on this but I’m in Quincy - always up for a round!

Ok, giving you all a head start before I send out the email later today/tomorrow. The BTP schedule continues to come together:

May 3rd, Chemawa Golf. A family-owned, beautifully maintained course that is exact the kind of course we should all be supporting. It is a little short which is why we’re playing this as a 6-club challenge. 20 spots, exact start time and cost will be cleared up shortly. $50 plus $10 for charity, we have the tee starting at 9:50.

June event sign-up at Quinney in CT. Starting at noon it will be $75 for golf, $10 for charity and $10 which will be pooled for a prize of some pro shop credit. 20 spots but if we have a big turnout we could expand to 24.

Hey everyone,

Recently joined the portal and just looking to expand the network of playing partners and connect with other MA residents. I’m located in the Brighton area but play the majority of the time at the Milton-Hoosic Club in Canton as I’m the lead assistant there. I do enjoy traveling throughout the state and New England to play the various courses but usually end up in Central MA if I’m not in Canton (Kettle Brook, Cyprian Keys, Blackstone National, etc.). I actually haven’t played that much competitive golf over the past few years, usually reverting back to the casual foursome with friends. The current handicap is at 8.8 but like everyone trying to get that down before the snow starts to fall again hahaha. Curious about the 1v1 matches for points so if anyone is interested in playing a few, let me know!
Hope to meet some of ya out there on the course and of course hope everyone has a great season!

One last bump on this. Got 11 sign-ups as of now for Saturday. Going to call and give back any extra tee times this afternoon but will still have at least one opening. Weather is looking nice. Jump on in!

Also, great to see we’re full up for the June event but if you missed out still add your name to the alternate list. As I mentioned we might be able to expand to 24 and even if we don’t we always have drops, so good chance you will still get a spot.

I live in Milton and have only heard good things about Milton-Hoosic. Seems like it’s a bit of a hidden gem in MA. Always looks like it’s in great condition when I drive by on my way to Pakeen Farm too.

That’s great to hear, glad we have that type of reputation within the Milton area!! That’s what we like to think of the club as, especially for the 9-hole course itself. Golf.com ranked us as the #26 ranked 9-hole course in the world back in 2020, although we are waiting on the newest rankings to be published hopefully soon. We added around 1,200 sq to #4 green, the hole closest to the road, with other features of the hole being updated as well. Our grounds crew does an amazing job keeping the course in top condition so that’s great that it’s being noticed!
We’ll have to get a match in this season so that you’ll be able to finally play it.

What’s up guys, I’m going to be moving to the Boston area in a few weeks and would love to get involved in any local events or just find some folks to get out and play with.

I’m originally from New Jersey, lived in the Bay Area for the last 3.5 years and stumbled upon the Roost there and had a blast.

I’ll be living in North Cambridge near Davis Square, and would love recommendations for golf and non-golf (courses to play, hidden gem restaurants I’ve gotta hit, etc.)

Visiting Boston / Cambridge for a graduation next week. Have some cool private golf lined up, fortunately, but have a few days to explore some public golf, too. Any hidden gems that I should seek out? I have Marion, Olde Salem Greens, Cape Ann, Rockport on my list. Maybe Cape Cod CC and/or Southers Marsh, too. Any of these I should skip?

How does William J. Devine compare to George Wright? Should I try to see both, or just George Wright.

Thanks!

George Wright is significantly better. I have always liked William Devine a lot too, but just played it this Friday and the course was in uncharacteristically bad shape. Could partially be due to the greens being punched a couple weeks ago and/or the random pairing who kept shouting racist shit at nearby pedestrians, but either way, you could miss it.

If you’re down by Marion, Acushnet is definitely a bit of a hidden gem. Really fun round for a solid price.

This would make for a lovely 27 hole day. All three are pretty close to each other.

I’m a Southers Marsh fanboy, so I’ll always recommend that one. I played it last week and it’s in excellent shape. CCCC is a good choice, and I like Brookside too, although it has a couple quirky holes that some people find annoying. It’s good value, for sure, though.

Foxboro CC is a really cool semi private worth checking out. Tough track but fun

Looking to put a few of the 1v1 matches on the calendar for these upcoming weeks if anyone is interested. Would be very down to set up a home-and-home series as well.
Don’t know if there is a specific format for these or criteria as I just recently joined the refuge. I do believe that another BTP member needs to be there and TheMassHacker needs to be notified beforehand but other than that I’m not quite sure. Only have the starting number of points as I have haven’t played in any of the events this year. I play out of the Milton-Hoosic Club in Canton but am ok with traveling elsewhere for the match.
Let me know if you’re interested!

I am not familiar with the 1v1 matches but love me some match play and would definitely take part. Happy to host at Thorny Lea.

Happy to join in on these matches as the ā€œScorerā€, been looking to get out to both of those courses for a while now
