Roll Call: Maryland

That’s not a bad idea. I still have all those leftover crabs from when TC and Phil never showed up at my house.

I would even be willing to serve up a bottle or two of Lucky Guys Monkey Joe, if the evening goes well.

Played it a long time ago before the casino was there. It’s not a bad course but also not really that great either. When I stayed there the food was excellent, the resort was nice, and the course was fine. At one time it was very affordable and it’s probably a good spot if it’s centrally located to your group. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there.

Dropping in from Tennessee just to encourage whatever y’all are doing… my girlfriend is from the Eastern Shore and I’ve had dreams of starting a MD/DE event if I move to her area someday… God’s country! Craic on gents!

Rum Pointe is the best course at the beach. Played late December 2022 and it was in fine condition. Scenery and seclusion is fantastic. I will say that in my opinion Bayside is an overpriced trip through the subdivision. Course is OK but I just can’t get over the price to basically tour the community. Do not play Bayside if you are looking for bay views, etc.

Nice to see Rum Pointe getting the love. Not a huge Pete Dye guy but have always felt it was the best of the OC courses. I always liked Eagles Landing as well. Haven’t played it for a long time though. I’ve enjoyed Ocean pines when I’ve played it as well. I’ll echo the Lighthouse Sound, meh.

I’ve actually enjoyed Rocky Gap when I played it. I hosted a now defunct MD vs PA Ryder cup event there years ago. They took great care of us. It’s a Jack. But not too bad. I’ve heard Lodestone is really nice if you’re heading west. Hard to beat Whiskey Creek in my backyard ($$$$ though).

Curious everyones thoughts on Queenstown Harbor? Sounds like they’re putting in a bunch of cottages now.

They are dumping some serious money into the place. They opened 4 more cottage style bungalows last year. They are also building a short par 3 37th hole this spring. I think their ultimate goal is to turn it into more of a resort. Courses are both solid. Good views of the Choptank and Bay.

I personally like the layout on the Lakes course better.

It’s funny. Everyone wants to play the River course and I find myself gravitating to the lakes as well. If they do it right, I think they can pull off the resort course.

They have the land to make it a resort. I’ve heard rumors that they have plans to build a full par 3 course. If they got a solid clubhouse/restaurant it would be a really really good spot.

The conditions on the 2 courses are the same (usually good unless we get a ton of rain). I don’t need to spend an extra $50 a round to see views of the water. I play there frequently and my only quibble is they don’t seem to enforce any sort of pace of play even though the carts all have GPS and they can monitor where everyone is on the course at all times.

Maryland Folks: Last event of the Cap GC season has registration open now! If you can’t make it out to Bulle Rock this weekend, we’d love to see you at Raspberry Falls next month!

Lodestone is awesome if you can make the trip work out to get there

Lodestone is nice. I really enjoy Oakland GC as an “everyday” course at Deep Creek. Nothing fancy but it’s cheap and I find the course interesting and gettable. The front has big greens but a bit more premium on where you need to hit a few of your tee shots. The back is wide open and has tiny push up greens with a lot of slope. I played the original 9 at Thousand Acres last Summer and really enjoyed it…even more than Lodestone. The second 9 just opened or is opening soon and it looks fantastic. A deep pocketed investor from the DC area is doing it right without worrying much about P&L.

Hey Guis and Gals, I’ll be in the Frederick/Baltimore/DC areas next Tuesday-Friday for work. Wondering if anyone wanted to meet up for an evening round Weds/Thursday or early Friday morning. Staying in Downtown Baltimore nights 2-3, Frederick Night 1. Was considering playing a strapped course but am open to any recs as well.

This is certainly a bit of a stretch… but then again so is trying to walk 100 holes in a day. That’s what I’m going to try and do on Monday as part of the National Links Trust’s 100 Hole Hike. For those of you hiding under a rock for the past three years, the National Links Trust was started by Mike McCartin and Will Smith with a mission to positively impact local communities by protecting and promoting accessible, affordable, and engaging municipal golf courses.

Since 2020, they have been working with the National Park Service to operate, maintain, and revitalize D.C.'s three unique (and historic) municipal golf courses. It’s a mission I believe in strongly and a project I have been following closely… because these courses – especially East Potomac Golf Links – mean a lot to me.

I wasn’t a kid that grew up playing golf with my dad or anyone else for that matter. I didn’t pick up a club until I was in high school, and then promptly put them away for the better part of a decade. But over the last 15 years or so, golf took on new meaning and importance as a way to stay connected with friends. And during the peaks of COVID, it was my weekly escape – sitting in the parking lot at East Potomac with coffee in hand waiting for the sun to come up so I could get out and clear my mind.

While I may not have grown up with the game, I made it a point to bring my son to the driving range at East Potomac as soon as he could hold a club, and I treasure the time we’ve spent there since. It’s not the fanciest course or the most interesting. It’s pretty flat and with a couple of exceptions most of the holes run together. But it’s a special place full of interesting people, and it deserves caretakers like the National Links Trust who are committed to ensuring that it remains accessible, affordable, and engaging for everyone.

Kudos to you if you’ve read this far. The bottom line is that NLT is just under halfway to their goal of raising $160,000 through this 100 Hole Hike, so I’m pulling out all the stops to up my fundraising contribution.

If you’re interested in keeping golf in D.C. accessible and affordable, I hope you consider making a donation to my 100 Hole Hike. You can make a lump sum donation, or make various outcome-based pledges if you really want to explore the studio space. While prolific, I’m not very good, so just keep that in mind.

This evening made me realize how much I hate the timing didn’t work out for me to make the Escape the Rock event. I had a blast playing Bulle Rock for the first time and chasing daylight. I’m currently working on a project in Aberdeen over the next month / month and a half so hoping to get back out there again or maybe down into Baltimore at some point.

There’s potential for my family and me to be in the Fair Hills area in mid October… any courses close by? don’t think I’ll get to play but wanna try

Certified dead zone

when I did a quick search I saw that but sometimes google sucks so wanted to ask…

For sure, Maryland golf is also wanting for better public golf, to be sure. If you’re up there I’d say hit Bulle Rock.

When are you in town?

hopefully October 17th through the 20th but still got some things in the air that could effect that
