Worked at that course growing up, it’s a gem. I don’t live in the area anymore but I always remember playing there fondly.
Wish I would have gotten on here sooner, I’ve been looking for people to play with in the area. I play the Baltimore county courses mostly because I used to work at fox hollow. Im about a 4 handicap right now. If anyone ever wants to play greystone, I play there pretty often.
Hey guys, shooo my first ever post on the Refuge. Been just ripping through more and more NLU content over the last few weeks/months, and, well, here we are… Grew up in the Bmore area and live in the city now. Joined a club this year- Piney Branch up in northern Baltimore / Carroll Counties. Beautiful course, albeit out of the way for most, but really affordable and just a great layout. Glad to have anyone out there next year or if we get a warm day or two this winter. Can usually play Tuesday/Friday afternoons or anytime on the weekends. I play to a 5, but as the handle implies, I can eeeasily make a 75 look like an 85
Live in NC these days, went to Dulaney, across the street from Fox Hollow (it was Longview back then). Used to drink beers on the 11th green back in High School.
I’ll hit this thread up next time I am up that way.
I liked piney branch a lot. I played there for a Maryland am qualifier last year. The greens were giving people fits haha
I remember playing Fox Hollow when it was called Longview… anybody know if they changed the course much when they changed the name?
Yep, Piney’s greens have been known to do that! Especially during events and qualifiers. So many subtle breaks there so it really takes some time to figure them out. And you must just live below the hole
The front 9 is pretty much the same, but changes around the back 9 a bunch.
Yeah I think they re-routed some holes on the back through parts of the old driving range. It’s still very straightforward
I’ve only played the new course once, but played the old course enough to tell you what’s changed.
The big changes at Longview are adding a driving range down the old 10th hole. This necessitated adding the par 3 (which I think is 10) next to the parking lot and reworking a new 11th and 12th.
Before the range was irons only between the parking lot and the backyards of homes on Pandonia Rd. New parking was added over part of the old range.
I’ll have to take you up on your offer when it gets warmer and we get some more daylight.
I’m in Carroll
Piney Branch is a good course, at least it was last time I played it (probably 15 years ago???). I remember it being tough and in good condition.
Here’s just a general question for people who have been playing in MD for a while… what was the best course in the DMV to close in the last 10 or so years since the burst of the golf bubble? I know there were a couple private clubs that closed in Baltimore County, one or two down towards southern MD… just curious
Wakefield Valley in Westminster was a loss. It was a fun 27 hole facility. A friend used to live next to the course and we would play there a lot back in the early 2000s.
I actually used to work there in the early 2000s (grew up nearby in the sticks) and the only differences since then are: renovated clubhouse making weddings better/easier logistically, a new short game practice area (this year actually), and the removal of many trees throughout the property. Also equipment/tech changes over the years have really made the course easier from tee to green (‘only’ 6800 from the tips). It’s all about the greens at Piney- lots of varied tricky undulations, always speedy. The rough can get especially sticky there as well
I agree- that course opened right when I got into the game and I always revered it as the best course around (granted I was 12, but still). It was sad to see it decline and die, and it’s even sadder to drive by and see the greens with 12’ high weeds growing out of them
Definitely @Shankapotomous, I get a kick out of showing-off that gem to golf buddies I’ve met over the years. I mean it’s no Caves or BCC, but it’s a good time
On the Eastern Shore courses have been closing down left and right, although the topography never lent to good courses, still sad to see them go. I wouldn’t put any of these in contention for “the best” but off the top of my head:
I think that’s everything that’s closed on the eastern shore.
I never got to play Bay Club, but based solely on aerials, it looked like a well-maintained course built in the image of Sawgrass
EDIT: After further review I’d like to have that Sawgrass comment stricken from the record… still wish I could have played there though, as well as the other closed courses (side note- I did play Deer Run once during Senior Week and it was the PERFECT course for that type of drunken scenario). But I always love playing a new course, no matter how good or bad, just because you know at least a handful of people had to do a shitload of work to build it. It absolutely broke my heart when Glenn Dale closed this year
