I play there a few times a year (it’s my go to when I need a confidence boost). Not long at all, easy walk, some short par 4’s that are gettable, no human frittata level holes (looking at you, Fairway Hills), and almost always in good shape, greens are in good shape (MoCo county course; was originally a private club). People that work there are almost always nice. Falls Road, but cheaper and
Played Rattlewood three times this summer/pandemic and enjoyed them all! Definitely a good variety of holes, especially at that price point. Shot an 81 there in one of the outings, which is pretty good for me. Definitely would return.
Played Swan Point over the weekend. Good times, was great to get out, but wow it was soggy. I walked the course, and I feel like I walked an extra 5 miles with how squishy all the fairways were under my feet at times. Lost at least 1 good drive to a ball being plugged in the fairway and unfindable. (Hole #2). Greens seemed pretty good though.
Yea Swan Point gets really soggy but still a great track and cool layout
Listen…we’ve all watched Strapped. You can’t sandbag us!
Playing the Links at Perry Cabin tomorrow through their “member for a day experience” via VSGA. The pro has mentioned that it will likely be cart path only, given the amount of rain over the past few months.
Anyone have the opportunity to play there lately and know of the conditions?
Rattlewood isn’t a long course, but its sneaky tough around the greens. If you’re not sharp, you’ll shoot the easiest net 78 of your life. Despite bouncing around the single digits and playing there dozens of times, I’ve only broken 80 there once.
I’ve been wanting to get out there since the reno. Have heard great things.
Finally checking out Queenstown Sunday for the first time ever (long overdue as I’ve played most of the public courses in the Bmore/DC/Etc. area growing up in Baltimore). @DJsCokeDealer I believe I remember this being your home course… any tips for the Lakes? River course looks superior but a bit pricey for my group’s blood (at least for the intro to Queenstown).
Lakes is usually in good shape as well. Just doesn’t have as many views of the Bay. Hopefully it’s dried out for you and isn’t CPO. Pretty straight forward for the most part.
Tee off in the morning if you can because it can get slow and logged jammed in the afternoon especially on the Lakes. However, if you’re playing in the afternoon you can get some good mega light on the back 9.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Tons out there.
My only other tip would be to bring cash because their computer/CC system is awful and can take forever when trying to get food/drinks. Also check out the pro shop. Typically run some good deals this time of year on gloves/hats and other apparel.
Awesome man thanks for the tips! I imagine it will be a little bit wet- fingers crossed that there’s no rain between now and then and it’s not CPO. It’ll be more of a fun round with a group of guys I rarely get to play with, though. Is the course walkable or do you recommend riding for a first-timer?
Unfortunately I don’t even think they let you walk. Lot of big gaps between some of the holes. But they have new carts with an awesome GPS and also Bluetooth and USB ports to play music through. I would say I’d meet you for a beer since my group has tee times today and Sunday but I’m going to be out of town. I’ll report back on conditions, they are on the Lakes today.
Edit: one last tip. They have a decent range but the short game area/putting green by the first tee on the River is good. If you’re a big warm up gui definitely check that out.
Great Intel, thanks again man! And definitely down for that beer next time I’m out there.
Also, on a completely unrelated note, I drove by my white whale that is Arundel Manor today after a site visit in South county. My God that place looks so pure. Not a soul out there either, as usual.
I have lived in Maryland my whole life and didn’t even know that place existed until the Refuge. Is there Augusta-like security over there? Looks incredible obviously from the aerial map shots. Couldn’t even imagine having my own personal golf playground like that.
I feel like if we all rushed the gate at once — and I concede we’d need like 50 of us, minimum — at least four or five groups would be able to play the front nine (or second nine, depending on your preferred outlaw routing) before we were all gunned down or tasered by the Sallie Mae jackboots.
Sorry to report back that the course was just kind of meh. The conditions weren’t good, which didn’t help, but also I expected to walk away in awe and walked away thinking it was solid but not great. We had a good round, other than waiting 1.5 hours for our food to be delivered to us on 15 (that we ordered on 7). Wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to get out there.
Man. Hate to hear that. I played it a few times before the Reno and it definitely has potential. Interesting to see what they do from here because that membership and price tag won’t put up with mediocre.
I’m in. I was scouting potential entry routes through the woods as I drove by today, trying to spot any security cameras or sniper outposts. Had to keep my speed up so I didn’t tip anyone off.
Just played there Friday and Saturday in the Veteran Golfers Assoc Maryland state championship. Fun Dye track, sucks theor fairways got murdered by all the rain in August but it appears they are going to be back in great shape come next summer.
