Roll Call: KC Area

Of the two, I prefer St. Andrews, but they’re both fairly generic munis. I grew up playing both quite a bit, so I have the nostalgia factor. Objectively they’re decent layouts, but not much more. Each have some interesting holes mixed with fairly straightforward ones. The conditioning tends to be a bit better than Swope, but worse than Ironhorse. Pace of play tends to be extremely slow at both on the weekend, as the tee sheets are packed to the gills groups of five. If there’s four of you, don’t be surprised to get a single added to your group. Green fees are a bit more than Swope, but less than Ironhorse

If you’re staying in Shawnee, you’re about 15-20 minutes from the decent munis. I’d do Falcon Lakes for the bachelor party; it is pretty wide open, fun, and good conditions. I actually played there for my bachelor party before a BBQ and party bus. And Swope the next day for the better players that will probably appreciate the layout. Both of those will run you about $45-55 incl. cart.

NOTE - I was just on Falcon Lakes’ website to check rates and saw this:
Sunday Dog N Suds Special every Sunday from 12:00 pm to close: $30 plus tax includes green fee with cart plus hot dog and your choice of 1 domestic beer (must be 21 or older) or 1 non-alcoholic beverage.

I like Sykes/Lady quite a bit. Just make sure you book your 18 starting on the South 9, so you can play the North 9 second and won’t have to go over to the West 9 which is across the street.

I would promote Falcon Lakes if you’re in Shawnee, and if you’re going to make the drive to Ironhorse, I’d almost rather go to Sycamore Ridge .

Hey @AustinColvard, here’s my two cents:

Sykes/Lady is a good pick. It’s also a bit more open than St. Andrews, so you’re not completely canned if you spray a ball. I’d recommend playing the North and South 9s. It’s usually in really good shape in the late spring. Plus, the new clubhouse is really sweet and would be a great place for the whole group to grab beers after the round. You can walk this course. Be looking to book about a week in advance, as the tee sheet does get pretty juiced.

I think Sycamore Ridge is an incredible course and a really good value. It is more of the smaller golfer group’s vibe than the big groups. It is definitely a cart golf course, as the back and front are pretty far away from each other.

Swope is a favorite because of the architecture, but rounds can get a bit slow on the weekends.

Thanks for the insight everyone! This has been very helpful. Some of us that are coming down early will be flying into MCI… what can you tell me about courses around the airport? (Tiffany Greens, Dub’s Dread, etc.) Looking online it is tough to tell which courses are private and which are public so I’m not sure if these are even possibilities.

Tiffany is the closest to the airport. I think it’s … fine.

Dub’s Dread is a fun course but it is on the Kansas side. It’s sort of out by the Kansas Speedway/Hollywood Casino/Legends.

Dub’s Dread has some really fun holes and is usually a steal for the price.

I think Shoal Creek is the best public course up north near the airport. Tiffany Greens is fine. I really like Dub’s… it just always beats me up, and there are some tricky holes if you are playing with all first-timers.

But Falcon Lakes is right by Dub’s and I’d rather play it.

I would concur with others that Shoal Creek is your best bet near the airport. A little further away is Paradise Pointe. They have 2 18s and I would recommend the Outlaw course. I’m biased, but i think Swope is a must play for any out of towner. It’s a little rough around the edges, but as others have stated, it’s a ton of fun and has some great holes.

It’s really nothing special, but I would suggest Minor Park for the bachelor party outing. It’s fairly wide open with little water, so those higher handicaps should get around really easily. And it’s a pretty chill environment / borderline apathetic.

Hey I just want to let everyone know that reached out to me to play Creekmoor on June 13th. We are going to have to find another date. I just received the tournament scheduled and that is the weekend of the Mem/Mem. I would still like to have people out, but we will need to find another date. More to come after this super bowl hangover is lifted and the weather breaks.

Found out some tough news yesterday - McGonigle’s will be no more in a couple weeks. I’ll be optimistic about Fareway meats, and hopefully they keep those knowledgeable guis behind the meat counter, but I loved perusing in that market and buying way too big bone-in Ribeyes.

Second thing: KC golf show is this upcoming weekend? 1) What are they doing putting it on Valentine’s Day weekend? I personally am looking forward to learning about the latest with CentralLinks and then hopping over to the marriage counseling booth. 2) Has anyone been? Looks like they have hitting bays, so… guess you can get some swings in. But is there anything worth going and seeing?

Huge bummer about McGonigles. Going by there on the weekends when they had a smoker out front to get some meats and a pulled pork sandwich was an great way to finish up errands for the day.

I remember going to the golf show in high school once, but don’t remember any specifics about it. I think semi-private courses were hawking membership deals, and there were some shops with stuff to hit, but it seemed very skippable.

I haven’t kept up with this thread in awhile so it may have been discussed recently. Any courses open in the KC area? Thinking about making a day trip from Des Moines this Sunday with a few buddies.

Yes. Many courses.

Where you tryna play?

I’ve only played Swope and BCN. Wouldn’t mind playing Swope again but open to suggestions.

How many people are coming down?

That’s still up in the air. Likely 3, maybe 4. If anybody is interested in meeting up and joining I’m all for it.

I’ve only been playing at my club lately so hopefully some others will chime in on conditions at some of the courses around town.

I’d recommend Sycamore Ridge, but I am a little leery of recommending it when they’re still charging $60.
