Richmond, Virginia (RVA)

For a pro or for a fun round?

It rules it’s so fun.

But it’s completely unable to host any type of tournament for spectators too hilly, too spread out, no viewing areas.

Also can’t walk.

Which sucks, because the Invicta tees are more than enough course for any tournament. 7450 with some absolute bruisers.

Myself, Babe and @RobertHunter we need a forth.

It’s great and interesting. But it’s not for spectators

I raise my hand. Haven’t played it since 2022 but loved it and Strantz’s other works. Tough to get out for 18 these days with a 1 year old though which keeps me mostly limited to 6-9 holes at Meadowbrook where I play out of. If anyone ever wants to check it out though drop me a line, happy to host. Might take some doing schedule wise though :joy:

Came across this thread and wanted to see what suggestions I could get from you folks.

I am the mens golf coach at a D2 program in PA. We are headed down to Myrtle Beach for our spring break trip and I was potentially looking at adding a round on the drive down on March 2nd. Does anyone have some course suggestions (public / private) that would be a nice treat for the team?

Thanks in advance for the help!

what route are you taking

May play RNK in January. Watching weather.

I-95 (at a minimum from Fredericksburg). There is potential that we go through DC depending on traffic

I’m from a considerably colder climate originally, anything over 40 is fine

I’d avoid DC unless there is a course you want to play that way. Royal New Kent would be my vote

I would be down for a links filled January day.

Country Club of Petersburg might be worth a look. It is on the Southside of Richmond and only 10 minutes off 95. It doesn’t get a ton of play so could play pretty quick the afternoon of March 2nd. It is private but I think you could work something out.

Royal New Kent Update

Played 18, tee time 11 am.

Course was wet from recent rain, and CPO.
Most areas dry pretty well, but with this cold air, the surface moisture couldn’t evaporate so there were some slick spots. Everyone had at least one wayward drive because of slipping.

Fairways and rough were in decent shape. 6/10. (Mid summer perfect only gets to about 8/10) at RNK.

Greens were softer than normal. Receptive and prone to spin. They were rolled and were plenty fast. The invasive sprouts they get in those greens were only bad on 3 or 4 greens. There was only one where it was a big issue. 4.5/10 (RNK maxes at 7/10 greens due to grainy Bermuda).

One downside to winter at RNK. With dormant greens they cut three semi permanent holes and rotate them. Some of these are cut in ridiculous places. There were holes that were almost unmakeable from outside 4 feet. Balls that would stop at the cup and roll back 5+ feet.

As an aside, bunkers weren’t in great shape, but mainly due to recent rain. I’m sure they will put some work in on those shortly.

Pace was typical of RNK off season. 4:45 pace. Could have been 4:15 except for CPO. Peak season is often 5+ when the out of towners and occasional golfers head out to get their teeth kicked in.

Big demerits for the pub being closed before 4 pm on a Saturday. Ridiculous.

Overall, it was well worth playing. Don’t expect to set any PRs on a winter round out there, but it can be a good time if expectations are managed.

@baberuth let me know if you plan to come down. Depending on kids sports schedules I may be able to sneak out.
