Refuge Book Club: Martyr! A Novel by Kaveh Akbar - TBD

I’m good for the Zoom link if everyone’s good on the date!

I can’t find any good book club discussion questions for this one (in fact check out my google search results below :joy:)

I doubt we’ll need them though. I’m sure we’ll have a good chat on this one and golf books and what makes a good golf book in general. I’m interested in chatting about what we’d like to see in golf books. I know I was really discouraged listening to 2 hours of the TrapDraw and a discussion of almost 60 books that none were written by women. No blame to the crew discussing; they’re just really not out there. I spend too much time thinking of what a great golf book written by a woman would look like and whether it would differ (it would definitely differ from Updike…….)

Look at that, the book club will finally get the exposure it deserves

Hey guys, really bummed but something has come up tonight and I don’t think I will be able to make it on. Unfortunately this work thing has to be addressed tonight. I will try to catch the end but I am not sure. Really looking forward to the next one!

Edit: @mcdonart22 - I think we’re waiting on you to start the meeting (or I don’t know how to do computer stuff…)

Great as always to connect with everyone! Fun to finally tackle a golf book even if we had our detractions.

For our first pick in 2022, going with a popular one, a timely choice, a manageable kick off for folks looking to get into their reading resolution lists, and a long listed selection in CBC’s 2016 Canada Reads: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Anticipated date for discussion: Feb 9th

@OffTheDole can you update title?

Going to try to strong arm @KVV to have the Station Eleven TV show coincide with the TV club selection to allow for a little Refuge symbiotics

New page follower here. What are people’s thoughts on refreshing your memory for a book you read 6 years ago? I’d love to read this book again, but won’t be able to get it from the library in time and don’t want to buy it.

Jump about our talk in any event! We often deviate from the book and discuss different things around literature, the novel etc

Join in! I’ve read it before but I have it on Kindle so it’s easy for me to re-read. Even if you realize you don’t remember as much as you thought, your presence is very much welcome!

I just realized that date wasn’t captured in the title…

are folks still thinking they’ll be ready to go on the 9th?

Also, TV club wanted more time to finish the show, but I think we’ll get it on the list

I am down to push it back to the 16th but can power through if needed. Also need time to watch the show!

I’m fine with the 16th, but the following week I’m on vacation with the family so hopefully no farther out than the 16th.

Chiming in here mostly as an FYI. I work for OverDrive/Libby if anyone needs help with getting an ebook (kindle included) or audiobook don’t hesitate to DM for troubleshooting. Your library card gets you access to ebooks and audiobooks through the Libby app (shameless plug I promise I don’t make money off this) hope to participate in these in the future!

Let’s go 16th

@OffTheDole can you add the date to the title please?

I’ve been lurking in this thread and enjoying some of the past read books so far.

I bought Station Eleven for my girlfriend as a stocking stuffer this past Christmas, so was pleasantly surprised when this became the next read. Naturally I “borrowed” it from her before she has read it yet.

Hoping there’s room for one more in the discussion, come Feb 16!

My card in Minnesota works really well with Libby except for the hold/reserve system. I tend to hold a mix of e and regular books and have found I can’t do it all through Libby. Libby has been great for audio books too!

I’ll let @Sarah be Book Club’s official spokesperson, but I can promise you she will say something along the lines of “the more the merrier.”

Also, I know I was the curmudgeon who mentioned a few months back that I hated this book the first go through but wanted to read her second novel to give her another chance. After revisiting this following watching the show, I have nothing else to say but I was a complete and utter moron. I’ll elaborate more on the 16th, and maybe it was the fact that we have live through an airborn pandemic, but this was such a refreshing read.
