I’m pretty picky about books and I get that a book club is partly about being exposed to things outside one’s comfort zone. Is it cool to join and not always finish the books?

It would have to be, as that happens every book - sometimes life gets in the way, sometimes maybe the book isn’t for everyone.

yes! No one would ever know because book club discussion is just who shows up when we connect over Zoom

Hey y’all, looking to #getinvolved a little more on the refuge and also hoping to read more so this felt like a good place to start. Anything I should no before hopping in to the current book?

We’d absolutely love for more folks to jump in for the new year.

@Sarah has a pic at post 835 or so that shows the majority of our reads. We pride ourselves in a wide ranging genre selection for sure—-with our very first golf read forthcoming! No stress on having to make a pick yourself on the immediate front, but we are open to anyone that wants to toss a selection down for sure.

For me, chatting books with such a diverse group of folks makes each read/ discussion wonderfully fresh. Dive in and enjoy!!

I’m so proud of how we’ve gotten through so many books and have had a really solid discussion for all of them! And without really trying we’ve done different genres, styles origins etc. Excited that we’ve eventually landed on a golf book!

Book just arrived today and have to say it’s a pretty sweet cover. First attempt at the club, and I’m about a 25 handicap reader, but excited to give it a go!

First of all, my cover is just a blue tee and a white tee and I almost want to return it for this version.

Just read the Preface - and realized this book was first published in 1996. That’s a … really interesting point in golf. Right before Tiger exploded on the scene, before the changes in equipment made distance a whole new thing (he talks about his 150-yard 5-iron…) … very much feels like a historical document just on this point alone.

I ordered this cover specifically because it was awesome

I’m looking forward to this discussion. I’m not done but I have … thoughts

Thoughts

I’ve never disliked a book we’ve read. Fairly sure this changes that. I can’t believe how arrogant and entitled Updike sounds. He truly seems noxious, and his free use of certain words are kind of shocking. Yes, it was a different time but not THAT different. Yowza.

I’m maybe a quarter of the way through and am struggling for the same reason.

The only part I’ve enjoyed so far:

Thoughts as well

His “How to” on how to drink receive and drink a hot drink was a pretty good “this is golf” without being golf

It really begs the question - do you evaluate the art (and the artist) based on the time it was created, or based on the current time? I’m not that far through this, but I’d read several of the essays back in the day, and they didn’t age well.
