Sorry, assumed that would come across in the invite: Chad is correct - 6:00PM PST on Wednesday night.
Ugh bummer. I have work events Wednesday evening. Really enjoyed the book and happy discussion. Look forward to the next pick
We missed ya Sarah!
Was a fun talk - most of us really enjoyed READING the book even if we weren’t sure we loved the book.
Next up we are going to read INTERMEZZO by Sally Rooney, as suggested by @CMick26. Date TBD.
I’m sorry y’all, I had every intention of making the call tonight but between kid’s baseball, dinner and bedtime the night got away from me. I really enjoyed Martyr! despite feeling like it ended very abruptly. I’ll probably go back and reread the last couple of chapters to see if I missed any little detail, but I really liked the introspection and the frank writing style. Akbar writes very similar to my internal monologue so it was almost stream-of-consciousness for me at times. Great rec!
Let’s keep picking yellow books so @greebs never gets to James
Seriously it’s an epidemic
The much expected announcement of James as your 2025 Pulitzer for fiction. Have read myself —@greebs pressure mounts.
I owe the club a Lonesome Dove effort though, as promised on the zoom last week.
I bought this a few months back and it’s been sitting by collecting dust while I’ve read several other books. Need to dive in soon
Anyone give me some audiobook suggestions?
Machine shop noise so headphones in a lot and listen to books almost everyday. Favorites are
- Every Cormac McCarthy book
- William Gay
- Original James Bond books
- David Joy
- Neil Gaiman American gods is a favorite
- jack carr
- don winslow.
- Virtually every golf book available on audible.
Not an audiobook guy as a rule, but feel Wright Thompson does his own reading of the The Barn? It’s been a heavy read as one might expect; got to think his connection and vocals might make that a must hear via audio?
Already listened to that and THE WEIGHT OF THESE DREAMS. Which is great
I have this queued up specifically because Wrights voice is so elite.
It’s heavy af
I just finished Lonesome Dove. Took maybe two weeks and it’s 900 pages.
It’s so goddamn good. So enjoyable and funny and sad and EPIC. I can’t wait to watch the miniseries.
Also as luck would have it, as I finished Lonesome Dove, Libby informed me that a copy of INTERMEZZO was available, so I’ve dove in. Enjoying it so much more than Rooneys last book thus far.
We should get @OffTheDole to update the subject here to say INTERMEZZO by Sally Rooney, date TBD
I regret to inform the haters that I ended up really liking it
I just got to part 2 and agree with @greebs, I quite like it despite it being something I would have never picked up on my own.
The writing was jarring at first, like a machine gun staccato stream of consciousness but with an emphasis on economy of words. I haven’t read anything like it.
Oh hey, I read Intermezzo a couple months ago. Will keep my eye on the discussion date…
Love anything James Ellroy. American Tabloid is a great entry point.
Can we start trying to set a discussion date? @CMick26 you selected the book what works for you?
