Its meant to poke fun at idiots outside the midwest. Coastal elite types.
I had an interview once with someone from LA and NY. Multiple times I said Im from Iowa. 1st they thought I could work the east coast since its close to Ohio, corrected them. Then they said west coast thinking I was in Idaho. The interview essentially ended when I confirmed in fact neither of those were correct.

I remember being in London when I was in college and trying to chat up some girls there. They asked where I was from. I said “Minnesota”. and they asked something to the effect of “is that by New York or LA” or “what coast is that on?” And I told them it wasn’t on a coast and then they just walked away
