Would strongly encourage playing the up tee on 12. Brings driving green into play and more danger/fun that way.
Haha, the other side of the street is not the best part of town to say the least.
Thanks again @Creags for hosting yesterday! That was definitely my favorite new course of 2024. For anyone that has not played CCC, it slaps. Great Ross greens. Not unfairly fast, but subtle breaks everywhere and very tough to judge from above the hole. The short 4’s are so good. And post-round hang on the patio was great.
A 10/10 day. I’m refraining from posting about the winner of the match play bracket as that is the responsibility of the winner.
CCC is my favorite course in Ohio I think. I genuinely love everything about it.

Hark! A 2024 Match Play Champion has been crowned! I typically don’t do a thorough by hole breakdown, but will dig a bit deeper into the summary. As @joecline41 noted, this course is spectacular. I’ve been lucky to play it once in the morning and now, once in the late afternoon. Has the layout for solid golden hour vibes. We had some ideal summer conditions. High 80s, low humidity, a steady breeze WNW around 10 mph (until a 20-30 mph sustained gust hit right on the 18th hole for a good 10-15 minutes). A great Labor Day weather send off.
@methridge and I clashed. Our first match against each other and 2nd round playing in the same group. I recalled Mike being a steady player, avoiding the blowup holes. Getting 13 pops, someone where I could not be sloppy. I thought I may have advantage with distance off the tee but knew he would be giving himself a chance within 100 yards. 2024 has not been as put together as 2023, and with yet another swing thought rattling around the cerebellum, my main strategy was to swing within and to keep the ball in the fat parts of the ball park.
#1. CCC has fast greens. And while they are totally fair, the practice green to hole #1 is shockingly different with the sloping. Great opening hole. A 2 putt to Mikes 3 putt was the difference. Jack 1 up after 1.
#2. Two fairways hit. Jack finds the front edge. Mike finds the bunker. Mike with an impressive up to find the surface. But another 2 putt vs 3 putt leaves Jack 2 up after 2.
#3. Two fairways. Two GIR. Mike burns the low edge. Jack makes birdie. Jack 2up after 3.
#4. Two rough balls off the tee. Mike advances. Jack tops out of some cabbage. Some wedges and putts, Mike gains one back. Jack 1up.
#5. Mike visited a lot of sand today. Mike Fairway bunker, Jack left rough. After some green side bunker grief for Mike, Jack finds the birdie and goes back 2 up.
#6. One of the firmest run up’s today. A hybrid from right rough landing probably 20-30 yards short bounces long for Mike. @Albatrossity lands one well short and runs 15’ by. I land one pin high and released back edge. Shout out @JDR9 who holes a 70 yarder for the bird. Couple wedges and putts. Jack 2up.
#7. See @Creags show-notes for 7. A heavy wind messes with me and Jack misses right. Mike with a beautiful hybrid to front of green. Solid par wins him the hole. Jack 1up
#8. Mike finds fairway off tee and layup. Jack finds left rough and takes a greedy punch layup from a suspect lie and puts in the grass face of a left bunker. Likely a shot of the day candidate due to lie, stance, and match storyline, I played a 95 yard shot with a PW and knuckled one up the neck to middle of green. Mike catches his approach heavy and after wedging on, my par wins the hole. Jack 2up.
#9. Jack GIR 2 putt. Mike front bunker, wedges on, and CANS the 30’. A big hold. Jack 2up.
#10. Mike and Jack take their separate ways with Mike up the left with more sand trouble and Jack up the right near hole 15 in the hay grass. After some sloppy layups, loose wedges, my bogey wins the hole. Jack 3up.
#11. Mike finds a 5 for 4 after a fat chip but then almost cans a 40’ for par. Jack leaves a birdie short in the heart. Jack 3up.
#12. Two great tee shots. A great knock down wedge leaves Jack a birdie look while Mike leaves the approach short. After some putts my par gets me 4up.
#13. Mike travels a bit long, Jack finds greenside sand. Mike with two below average chips for his standards but then CANS AGAIN another 30’ for bogey. This leaves me a 5’ tester for bogey which I place center. Jack 4up.
#14. Mike stripes a drive and takes care of approach. Jack leaks one right and connect with a solo tree. Lost ball and conceded hole. Jack 3up.
#15. Mike hits the fairway. Jack hits likely the best drive of the day. Just a wind piecing bomb which allows to get the 2nd shot into the green side bunker, which is wedged up to 7’. Mike progresses up but an untimely 3 putt gives me an opening. I actually gaffed thinking the birdie was needed to win. Gassing it through the break leaving 5’ coming back. After stepping off once, I made the come backer not realizing the significance.
I won 4&3. I played solid and put together one of my better performances of the summer. I’m sure Mike would love a few wedges back and a few less bunkers. He had my attention the entire time and I enjoyed the company of @methridge @Albatrossity and @JDR9.
Thank you @golf4miami for organizing and procuring the champion gifts. Very proud to represent the trophy! ![]()
A worthy champion and a solid way to round out the summer. Hell yes, fam!
Congrats @jack67 a worthy champion and some impressive matches along the way. Hell of a run again by @methridge as well.
Also shoutout to everyone who made it out to CCC for the final. I’d like to think yesterday represented everything that’s right with this group, fierce competition, mediocre golf and an A+ hang afterwards.
The last two winners and not realizing a putt was to win 4&3 and making it.
What a great write up! Congrats on the win @jack67!
Thank you @Creags for the awesome pictures as well.
I’m sad I couldn’t be there, but it sounds like it was a hell of a day.
@ChickPhilA petition to get this on a Nest exclusive tshirt. Sums up everything that I love about this community.
Congrats to @jack67, and what a place to have done it. I could not have enjoyed myself more, the golf course is simply exceptional. It’s a real strategic test, with several tee shots that require thought as well as execution. It’s absolutely a place that can be played every day.
Also a huge shoutout to @Creags, @joecline41, and @Twowaymiss (especially when he hasn’t played golf in a month!) for making the experience that much better.
Awesome day, awesome course. Great seeing everyone. Congrats to @jack67 on the win and @methridge for making it to the final. Wish my chubby self wouldn’t have ran out of gas on 13 or so. lol.
I want to give a special shoutout here to @Albatrossity for being a super generous host for this year’s Finale. Not only did he help coordinate an amazing venue for our players, but he very generously donated back the guest fees to our winner so that money can go to the charity of @jack67’s choice instead. Just an amazing thing to do.
Because of @Albatrossity’s generosity and the fact that we already have the trophy, our overall costs were a little lower this year compared to last year which was also good because with the change in how we did the entry fees (which will likely revert back to the old ways next year) we had less money in the bank. In the end however, after the cost for ball markers from @flanwilder and the winners headcover from @Geaugolf we had $475 left over to donate to The Turn.
You can read about the outstanding work they are doing Here.
Thank you ALL again for participating in the third year of our OATW Match Play. Kind of wild that it’s been going on this long. I cannot wait to see who winds up taking home the trophy next year.
Speaking of next year, if we have someone out there who is willing to host the Final, hit me up! We’ve covered Dayton, Cleveland, and Columbus. Maybe we should get a host in Cincinnati for the fourth iteration?
We thinking a reach around season again? Aka start playing matches now?!
I was going to give it a week, but I think we can if people are ready to kick it off?
Anyone ready to get the 2025 edition started or are we all into our Fall cozy time and wanting to wait until Spring?
I think the feedback from this year’s event was that the open play worked for the most part for people to be able to schedule. I do wonder if doing the wrap-around though is kind of what kept the overall number of participants lower since fewer people wanted to pick it up in the Spring having not played a match in the Fall?
Either way, I think we’re going to go to a straight $20 entry fee for the 2025 edition right off the bat. Doing the split entry fee thing last year was a bit too messy and confusing, understandably.
Also. We’re still looking for a host for the Final! Do you want to add your club to the outstanding pantheon of Finale hosts: Moraine, Canterbury, Columbus CC? Hit us up!
