It was definitely a scorcher, both in temperature and in the heat of the match. Assuming a couple of putts given, I finished the round with a 69 (-2), which on most days I’d be pretty proud of, but you played your tail off the whole day and never made anything easy for me. That’s the beast that is match play, though, and it was still a ton of fun. Go get 'em the rest of the way!
Good Morning you four. How are we doing on our scheduling of the Semi’s?
@jack67 and I tried to play last Tuesday, but we got rained out after 4 holes because the course shut down the back 9. We are scheduled to try again this afternoon, but there’s thunderstorms in the forecast again. If they don’t shut down the back 9 we will have a winner tonight, otherwise we will have to figure out another time that works.
@methridge and I are lining up a showdown on the 10th at the neutral site of Heatherwoode.
I was able to take a W over @spicychimis at Painesville CC. The weather flirted for another rain out but ended up being a nice evening. I drove it well and had a solid round. Steve was 1 up through 4 after a sick, chunk chip followed by chip in, popping bird. Unfortunately some wrist pain led to a few facets of his game deteriorating and I was able to build up a lead into the back 9. Hoping for a recovery over the coming weeks!
No excuses here. @jack67 kicked my ass. No amount of pops could’ve saved me. Good luck in the finals!
We have a foursome booked at Heatherwoode at 9:10 on Saturday 8/10 with two open spots if any witnesses would like to join.
Count me in, if there’s still a spot!
All yours! One spot left if anyone else wants to join.
I’ll take it if it’s still available!
You got it brother
After 18, the match is all square…
I thought about letting this hang longer, but I won’t tease.
@methridge and I met at Heatherwoode this morning with @vwhitehead4417 and @pjsutherland filling out the the foursome. The course was packed with a Drive, Chip and Putt contest going on today.
I was getting two a side from Mike. The match started off with me getting a par to win the first whole. The second whole was my first pop and I took advantage matching Mike to take full advantage. We pushed on the next and I took advantage of my second pop on the front to get to 3 up after 4. Mike got going and we pushed a couple of wholes in a row and then I fell of on 7 and 9 to be 1 up at the turn.
I got going again and won two of the next three to get it back to 3 up after 12. Then Mike turned it on and went even par with a birdie for the next 4 holes while I threw up all over myself. Mike 1 up. We both miss the green on the par 3 17th and end up pushing the hole to go Mike 1 up into the final hole.
Mike hit his drive just in to the right rough. I slice mine to the same area and get a kick to the right. I hit a decent recovery shot after being blocked out. From there I got up and down to win the 18th with a par.
So after 18, the match is all square.
This is the part of the round where the juniors out there grinding came in to play. The putting green was slammed with young hitters. We talked to the starter and he gave us the go ahead to go back out off of 1. So we roll out to the first tee to see two groups on the box and another two in the fairway. No bueno.
So we looped back to the range for a potential range ball chip off. There, we catch a break and see a gap in play on 10. We head that way for the group making the turn to pull up right behind us. After explaining the situation, they graciously allowed us to play ahead. I hit a great drive and Mike pushing his a little to the right. Mike ends up with a fortunate flat lie surrounded by slopes. He hits a great shot just through the back. I then went up and proceeded to fat the hell out of my approach shot. Mike went up, chipped on and made the putt he needed to, winning the match on the first playoff hole.
As always, OATW company is still undefeated for a group to play a round with. Congrats to @methridge for punching his ticket to the final against the waiting @jack67.
Couldn’t agree more! The vibes were great all day, as was the weather for the first time in way too long.
Congrats on the dub, @methridge! Bring the chip to Cincinnati.
The 2024 edition of the OATW Match Play tournament will be taking place this Sunday the 1st at 3pm at Columbus Country Club.
@jack67 vs. @methridge for the right to be named Match Play Champion and get their name on the trophy!
Excellent! Are there any tickets left?
As luck would have it I was able to grab the 3:10 tee time and will have 3 spots open behind our championship match.
@wreckhockey you are welcome to one of those spots if you want it.
Wow, absolutely! Thank you, I will see you Sunday!
You got it, two spots remaining
