That’s correct. Upping the limit to 10 makes it so that basically every match will count unless you’re somehow able to get in 10 matches from the time the current year Finale ends to mid May the next year.
I could see a few getting in that number, but I’d be willing to bet it’d be lower than 5 players who get to 10 matches. And making it PPM means that once you get your three required matches in, if you’ve won all three it becomes a bit of a proposition whether you want to play more or not.
I like that balance, but I’m willing to see if others disagree.
I am ok allowing a repeat match but we should really lean on the don’t be a scumbag rule for guidelines. If you already play with someone on a regular basis don’t use that person for more then one match. All matches have to be recorded so we will be able to suss out any shenanigans.
A big part of match play is meeting new people so please be cognizant of that and if someone reaches out to schedule you, make your best effort to agree to that match and make it happen even if it might mean your weekly friends $5 nassau gets missed.
I like it as well, one thought would be if 2 people wanted to do a home/home type thing where they play each other at their respective home course.
Could limit it to 2 matches per person for that, or keep it at one that forces folks to get out with others more.
And love being able to play these matches in the Fall. As others have said major kudos for all of the energy that’s gone into this plan!
All this sounds great and I’m in. Now for the “I’ve never done this before” questions…"
As someone who has not had the opportunity to play competitively other than with a few friends and maybe a Thursday league, how does the match play work? simply straight match play hole to hole? is the lower handicap giving strokes on each hole? If so, when and how is this determined and by whom (match players, or roost c-suite)?
You both have agreed upon handicaps. Preferably official GHINs. The higher cap gets strokes. You play hole by hole. Most people here know their handicap. You can do strokes by course rating I believe but I usually just do it by hole handicap. If you are getting one stroke from your opponent then on the number one handicap hole you get a stroke. Don’t over think it. Have fun and launch’m.
Agreed. @dfresh285 USGA has a website calculator that takes your GHIN and converts it to the handicap for course and tees you’re playing. Then high course hcap - lower course hcap = how many strokes the higher hcap gets.
I DO like this. A true home and home would be kind of fun to allow. It would remove some of the negotiating about where to play a match as well. I could see it being a tougher sell though since we’re requiring a minimum of 3 matches and if someone plays two matches against the same person and then a single other match to qualify that could definitely start to fall into the “scummy” category.
Maybe we could say you need to play 3 or 4 matches before you can duplicate an opponent?
Personally I’ve sent screenshots and/or shown my handicap on the day of the match to prove it’s current. But you can also search for your opponent on the GHIN app to check current handicap as well. I don’t think we’ve had any problems with people trying to be a scumbag in this area (that I’m aware of) yet which is a testament to our community.
The GHIN app lets you put both your names/numbers in for a match and takes care of the handicaps and which holes the strokes will be given on. It’s really nice for this sort of thing.
Don’t be a scumbag >>>>>> any rule/format we could come up with.
In all seriousness though I wouldn’t be opposed to the bracket being also somewhat discretionary by the match play committee just to sus out any shenanigans if it comes down to a few people for the last remaining slots.
I’m down. Mrs browcoww really enjoys how welcome everyone here makes her feel welcome when she’s around at events. Par 3 course somewhere and drinks would be a good time.
Home and home proposition. Treat it as a 36 hole match and add a bonus point. If you are really PPM maximizing, a home and home win over 100 miles apart could be 5 points (1 playing, 1 distance bonus, 1 home and home bonus, 2 win points) for a win and 3 (1 playing, 1 distance, 1 h+h) for a loss. No double distance points. You would basically get the playing point of each match but not the win/tie points for each. It may slightly skew PPM, but it would be a middle ground between two matches and no repeats. A local win would be equal to a long distance home and home loss for PPM.
I think my synapses aren’t firing properly. Are you saying you think if someone plays a home and home they should be allowed to meet the qualification threshold with two matches instead of three?
