NLU Peloton Thread - Weekly Ride: 30 minute 2010’s Hip Hop Ride with Ally from 7/25/24

I lost a good amount in the first few months (15 lbs?) and certainly can stand to lose more but to some degree I plateaued and built up more muscle which negated some weight loss. No question that my fitness has improved a lot and I’m also older so weight loss gets harder … it’s why I’m glad there are other ways to measure success with Peloton than just the scale.

define significant?

using the bike, along with changing diet, I’m down about 15 lbs (210 to 195lbs) over the course of a year. My output on the bike has more than doubled, so I know I’m stronger also.

Yeah, I could stand to lose 5 or 30, so something like that.

I lost about 15 within the first 3 months (200->185) and have plateaud since then. I’m at that 26-27 BMR range where I need to eat quite a bit better to finish getting to my goal weight. (165, where I was pre-pandemic). My RHR is WAY down, and I feel much better in general. I still get the standard cardio benefits, but also hitting the point where just doing cardio ain’t enough anymore to lose weight.

To be fair you didn’t really whine about being tired until after I asked you why you seemed to have less patience with your game than normal.

@greebs is 99% of the time the most level headed golfer I play with. Only once have I seen him truly mad on the course (he walked off after 14, as did I). Besides that he’s always cool.

I’m down between 35-40lbs over the past year using primarily my peloton. Did a combination of cycling and strength workouts and programs over the course of the year to get the weight loss and have shifted more into maintaining now.

Edit to add I also really adjusted my diet to make it more of a lifestyle change that included getting back into a better fitness routine and healthy foods and eating habits.

I got down about 55 or so in 1.5 years, but had to drop alcohol to do so. I traded giving back about 10 lbs for IPA’s.

I usually have some whiskey every evening after dinner while watching sports or whatever. I’m gonna go dry for January and I’m going to be very annoyed at how much weight I lose.

I hear this, I did a Beer Advent calendar and have continued to enjoy December since Christmas - having a good chunk of days where I don’t drink will be good for the waistline.

I haven’t been brave enough to step on the scale yet. I did fine over thanksgiving at the inlaws, but 6 days at my parents house did me in. Also being a walker, having golf be done for the winter means I’m not burning 1000+ calories every week.

Just being away from the baked goods, booze, and getting back on the bike should drop me a few lbs over the next couple weeks.

I took that Leanne ride too and thought it was great!

It’s totally possible that off camera she’s a serial killer, but I do like how much joy she brings to her rides, while also generally having good music and a good cycling plan. It makes it way more fun to do the rides (and to pre-emptively point out @JohnnyPanton’s point, she’s REALLY easy to look at and listen to as well).

This is most definitely a realistic possibility. I’m okay with that too.

Chiming in to say that while I am just starting out (and not really expecting to lose crazy weight), I do know people who have with Peloton being their main source of exercise, at least in terms of how often they do it. I think they ran a bit too, to be fair. That said, of course they all were on pretty strict diets.

Most people I know who use Peloton regularly seem to fall in line with a few of the other comments you received, where they’d lose 10-20lbs from increasing their physical activity and kind of plateau there.

That’s mostly what I am hoping for personally, to be honest. I will be the first to admit I am not really on a diet or anything. Just wanted to get more physical activity and feel better in general.

Finally joining the Peloton gang and ours will be delivered in about a week. Look forward to getting my ass kicked for the next couple of months. Way too many posts to go through so if there are any really important tips would greatly appreciate the cliff notes.

Add the #NLURefuge tag to your profile. We do a weekly ride, if you take it we will see you because of that tag. If you’re just getting started on the bike, make sure it’s setup right for your height (Google videos on this) and I’d also suggest taking the Beginners program

Also, just added my minutes to the spreadsheet as I’m not riding today (took my FTP test yesterday and you know, that’s enough).

10,190 minutes for the year, pretty satisfied with that.

I also was just looking at the Top 50 rides, and I think it’s telling who they gave the rides to. There is no way they’d give some of these rides to unpopular instructors. And for cycling it went:

Leanne, Alex, Emma, Cody and Kendall

The fact that they gave Kendall the top ten seems telling to me, and I wonder if she’s in some ways the most popular instructor. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but it sort of shocked me that it wasn’t Alex, Cody, Ally or Robin. Kendall might in fact BE the most popular and it’s not because she’s good at it, it’s because she’s blonde and is a thirst trap on Instagram. And that’s fine, to be sure. But it stuck out for me for sure.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year and let’s roll in 2022!
