NLU Peloton Thread - Weekly Ride: 30 minute 2010’s Hip Hop Ride with Ally from 7/25/24

i personally try not to get too deep in the leaderboard/PR game… enjoy the ride, get what YOU want out of each class. sometimes i go low or middle resistance call out and higher called out cadence. or i go vice versa. i hide the leaderboard every single ride. do not hate on anyone that keep close eye on it thou, Peloton is all about finding YOUR motivation.

for reference, i average output 215 +/- 15 watts on the bike depending on the class. when i ride my actual road bike for similar exercise my power meter typically averages 190 +/- 15 watts

I almost never deviate from cadence call outs (except 85+ OOS; i never feel stable doing that so i don’t. And, frankly, it doesn’t happen often). I almost always use my own resistance targets.

Only scummy thing i do is in final min of ride i keep my output at whatever my average is to that point. No sense working hard for 44 min and then tanking it for the last 60 seconds.

As far as my background, definitely played sports all my life (including baseball and football at a small d3 school). My mentality on the bike is at all times “don’t be a pussy”. I work really hard and don’t do much in the way of resting. It equates to big avg outputs.

For anyone who is truly interested in calibrating their bike the right way (I am not because I am lazy), here is a good overview - https://whoismostmacho.com/

After almost 2 years of riding I wouldn’t want to adjust anything to change my calibration because measuring my performance against previous rides would be impossible. I don’t ever really use the leaderboard function to measure myself against other riders.

Having been on a bike at a Westin that was off calibration, it’s WILD. I had to remove the rides I completed, because of how crazy they were. If anyone is bored, look at the top 50 people on Alex’s All-Star ride.

Hi no thank you please. I’m built for a velodrome.

This is what I did - they mail you the calibration kits if you tell them you’re having any problem with resistance consistency.

I also had a tech come out because they needed to replace a crank arm - he calibrated it as well and followed the same process.

I ride my peloton because I can’t ride a real bike. Stop judging me!

There’s some interesting “work” on the peloton subreddit about how even after calibration, the bikes don’t match up at all.

It’s honestly pretty frustrating for someone who wants to know output and “compete” against friends. It’s also pretty unfortunate having all of my PRs be from pre-calibration and completely unattainable.

Loved it - – I was happy with getting three retroactively awarded badges. Then I checked out how my Pelobods were keeping up:

The image doesn’t seem to pop up easily … anyway, the top 6 people I’m following on the bike are all over 20,000 minutes already this year.

this is where I’m at too - no interest in ‘seeing’ if i need re-calibration. I’ve taken rides on 3 different bikes, excluding my own, two of which were in studio rides – all of which had results very similar for a pretty typical 45 min ride for me.

So i have to say, first off…Its really nice that this has remained completely civil discussion.

As much as i don’t care about the leaderboard…I kinda care about the leaderboard. Not about where i end up but more in regards to how i actually preform. I want to see my output as the correct output, and actually more importantly i want to know that i am riding to the specs that the instructors are calling out. I did just get my bike at the beginning of this month but I am curious if mine is on spec.

Honestly this should be addressed by peloton and its kinda frustrating that its not easier to do. This is a premium product, they should back that the bike comes calibrated or we should be able to calibrate it ourselves. If people don’t want to calibrate and juice their stats honestly i don’t care but i do want to know my bike meets spec.

I got mine second hand so don’t know for sure, but when they deliver and set it up don’t they make sure it’s calibrated correctly?

ummm…They did not do mine…Shit

I should add i am pretty close to the same outputs i had on my apartment bike so they may be completely accurate but that doesn’t mean over time it won’t come out of spec

Also, i would be very worried if a discussion about Peloton bike calibration was not civil.

I mean…its the refuge… smaller topics have caused much more unrest

My older brother just bought a new bike, compared to our older bike I think the output difference is around 10%.

They also didn’t calibrate anything. They wouldn’t even carry it up our stairs even after we offered both of them $100 each to do so.

Got mine last week. The dude put it on the mat I set up, made sure the screws were tight enough, the bike was steady enough, and made sure the screen worked. Unless he did it with his phone or something, there was no calibration that I saw.
