I remember that - just didn’t connect that it was you!
Been thinking of my dream 18 at Bandon.
I am mainly set, but having an internal struggle on the 11th hole:
Every one needs to know that @MrChickPhilA took on the cliff, look at where he is aimed. Dude slung a draw out to sea and brought it back
Yes, @fishtopher18 but remember, I swung so hard the first time, I almost missed it. If anyone wants to jump down the cliff, they’ll find a TP5 with a J on it.
I was thinking about this on the plane. Love the idea of using a sheet to visualize it.
Best Advice from my caddy - pee downwind
Best Shot - @Jrembold driving the green on the short Par 4 on Trails, number 8. So what if it was his 2nd ball??
Best Putt - every putt that @OffTheDole made with his monstrosity of a putter
Worst Shot (mine) - cold hard shank on Bandon 15 tee shot. It was tough to narrow it down, but I’ll give it to my only hosel of the trip.
Best Birdie (mine) - Made 2 at the Biarritz (Old Mac 8) for my first birdie of the trip on round number 4.
Best Birdie (others) - Neil’s 2 on the Redan at Old Mac, it looked too easy! Would’ve been @BTonk3 on Trails No. 3 if he made the putt after driving into 4 fairway.
What a great week! Really enjoyed meeting everyone the post round hangs!
Most admirable Traj: @fishtopher18 for his driver game (at least the front 9) of Pac Dunes. #pure
Best shot witnessed: @McRib’s near ace on #5 at Trails
Best birdie: I will nominate myself for a birdie on #8 at Pac Dunes in the midst of a mid-round crisis. Propelled me to go 45/35 and come back to push matches with @desperateunder105
Spieth-ian scramble award: @Harbo1 for his sick bunker shot out of the left fairway bunker on #10 at Trails.
Most impressive on-course take: @ArnieDrillingKools’s caddie at Bandon declaring in first fairway “I dont gun it” when asked for a yardage
Worst shot witnessed: @Tron’s tee shot on #18 at Old Mac into the pit of despair. Having already kicked my ass in the match he didnt need to hit a good one…and he didnt
Again had a great time with all of you!
Irrelevant - the 2nd shot was none the less ballsy
Little late in life to be learning not to piss into the wind no?
An absolute tale of 2 9’s for you at Pac. The birdie on 8 was wild. Doak is extremely upset at you for that one.
Got to outsmart the madman - if you hit the wrong fairway, the danger he puts out there isn’t in play
Best shot(s) - minus literally one swing, being front row to @MattyB 69 at Trails was the highlight of the golfing part of the trip for me. Watching him get it around was something I won’t forget and I learned SO MUCH observing that round.
Could have been a contender shot - @sundaybag shot into 17 at Pac. If it had done what it was supposed to do and release, I am pretty sure I’d have video of him draining it. He could not have dropped it in a better spot, but got totally effed by the lack of the movement on the ground. My caddie who has been there since 1999 said he’s never seen a shot stop where it stopped.
Best DIY routing - the three-ish hours I spent on Shorty’s with @fishtopher18 and @tjosu. Just a treat, and an ideal way to start the week, creating our own course on that land was the best.
Worst shots(s) - any time there was a putter in my hand (save for punch bowl). Literally the worst I’ve putted in years. Lesson here, don’t throw a putter in the bag before a trip because you were ‘feeling the flow’ shortly before. Also, mallet putters fuq. I missed mine the entire week.
Listen, there are worse ways to go than being taken out by a bunker shot on the patio at trails while laughing your ass off at @goodmaej13 @ryanrokisky and @ArnieDrillingKools and others.
The confusion we caused to all the groups around us was awesome. Shortys rocks
What a group to finish up that trip with! So much fun. So many birdies were made that group ran out of fireball!!!
This makes that punch bowl putt even more impressive. And I feel like everyone who gets to play with @MattyB has to come away with the same impression. You can’t watch that ball flight and not be inspired to try harder. After watching Matt, @BTonk3, @Soly, and @MerchCzar up close, I’m ready to put in some work!
EDIT: I also wanted to add how nice it is that the good golfers in the group tend to be great people. I never felt uncomfortable, even in the two groups where I was the only person playing the greens.
best surprise / view not seen in flyovers or marketing material: tee shot on #9 sheep ranch
Best shot of the trip goes to @Cody on the 12th at Pac Dunes. He was way left and hit a blind shot from behind a big dune, over the front left bunker, and holed out for an eagle. From 120 maybe? Somewhere near the red dot on the left.
Worst shot of the trip was a 17 way tie with my shots on the back 9 at Pac Dunes when I suddenly couldn’t find the club face. FIGJAM. But I honestly did not care what my score was at any time on the trip. Anytime I got down on myself, I just took a look around and just smiled.
Best time of the trip for me was walking out to refill the cupboard on the 10th at Bandon Dunes at midnight. Topped off an incredible day that will definitely be a core memory forever.
This times a million
I’ll play. This was tough…going with a Par 70
For reference, here are my initial course rankings after trip #1:
- Bandon Dunes - The back 9 just gave me an incredible feeling. I couldn’t stop smiling.
- Old Mac - This one snuck up on me. It helped that I played my best here, but I still would’ve loved it either way.
- Bandon Trails - Last round for me, wish I would’ve played it earlier or twice. I have a feeling this may climb up my leaderboard next time.
- Sheep Ranch - Nothing wrong with it, just couldn’t crack my Top 3 above the courses above
- Pacific Dunes - Some really cool holes that were fun to look at from tee box. Once I started playing the hole and found myself looking at bunker walls three times my height, it was a little less enjoyable.
