Keith Mitchell Podcast

Agree to disagree on needing so many fans present that venue choice is affected.

In their original iteration, pretty much every venue has been made obsolete by distance. For the most part, the only ones that are still able to host are the ones with adequate land to expand. Winged Foot is 700yds longer now than it was in 1929 at their first US Open for example.

Myopia is one that used to host a bunch of Opens. I found some references to a 6300yd course when it opened and being long at the time. Looks like it’s been redone by Hanse and stretched to 6500.

Maybe look stuff up before posting…

Without reading the entiretey of this and the distance debate, should probably be combined topics at this point if we’re being honest.
My opinions are:

  1. USGA and the PGA can’t possibly “put the toothpaste back in the tube”
  2. Introducing a PGA wide standard golf ball that spins much more seems like the only answer. You want golf to be more exciting and get more engagement? Keep the distances where they are currently, but make the misses way worse. I want to see guys blowing it off the planet. If my slow-ass swing can cause the ball to go into the next fairway I want to see these guys blowing over the adjacent holes.
  3. People caring about where the PGA plays and used to play based on length is like old people complaining about younger generations. All these clubs that are crying about how they can’t get long enough for the PGA can shove it for all I care. 99.99999% of all golfers can’t even play these places so why should I care about their survival? I don’t care where the PGA plays as long as the coverage is good and competition is close. Adapt or die you lumbering behemoths.

No shit?

Is it possible there are reasons other than distance for them not having the US Open in, wait for it, 112 years?

You can be as big of aholes as you want, it doesn’t make what I said untrue. Unless they have the land to expand, pretty much every venue has been made obsolete by distance in their original iteration.

Did you know the Model T was debuted after the last major hosted at Myopia? This was a fun fact I learned.

Fortunately the USGA added contemporary gem TPC San Diego to the rota next year so we can watch endless shots of people hang gliding when the golf gets too boring.

Can’t find much online about it’s original scorecard, routing, or playing length for the first tour event they hosted. It looks like the course has been revised no less than 3 times, and at a current length of 7700 yards has probably added between 500-1000 yds since opening in 1957.

Been traveling a lot last week and this week and was able to just go back and listen to this podcast

Was awesome to hear the ins and outs of his story.
