At least the trees are popping in the background!
The course looks incredible right now, I need to snag some better pics before they all fall this weekend with the cold coming!
18 holes blown out so far and I’d love to say I have pictures to show but I’ve lived on the Lynx app (our maintenance bitches will know).
I’ll snap some pics of the huge compressor we have along with a grasp of the amount of diesel it sucks daily (400 ish litres easily)
A few thoughts on Golf Course Maintenance crews / supers etc.
First and foremost… Thank you Thank you Thank you!
Second. Is there any group of workers more routinely criticized by people who have no idea what they are talking about than a private club Superintendent?
Ten guys sitting around after a round of golf, on their 3rd drink, explaining how it was poor course conditions that led to their 92 and loss of a 5 dollar nassau. They then complain to the Pro or a buddy on the board…
Almost all of the complainers don’t know the Sup’s name. Sad
Thanks guys!! (and a few gals)
One of the best ways to describe the average golfers relationship with the maintenance crew is to ask a golfer who’s hit at a worker and see if they would have done the same if that same person was a golfer on the hole.
100% of the time it’s a defensive “of course not”, that being said the % of golfers who go out of their way to be courteous, appreciative and caring for the course make the job and the downsides worth it every time. Warms my heart when I see a member spending a few minutes and fixing up some ball marks to keep the course in better shape for tomorrow.
It snowed today…
Slowly mentally recovering from the acceptance that temps aren’t going to rise for 5 months.
They don’t tell you about this side of maintenance lol
Don’t put those thoughts out there! You got this!
My most optimistic hopes are that we get a rough start and then it’s smooth sailing from then out, but my pessimistic side says this is the beginning of 4 months of hell.
Idk which side to run with currently.
I also appreciate the support this thread has given it’s been so much fun and you’ve been supportive since the beginning !
Back in my 20s I used to work on the golf operations side of some semi-private courses in Northern Virginia. I met one of my closest friends suring this time. He was the assistant superintendent of the course and took me under his wing to explain how to keep a course alive. I would ride around and assist with aeration, mowing, hand watering, the whole 9 yards. Today, I got the call to come out and hang at his latest course. I knocked off a bucket list item and learned gow to mow greens. There is something so completely satisfying about it that I can’t put into words. I am currently on the hunt for a new job, so the stress and bullshit that goes along with it were pushed out of my mind as I focused on making clean passes along the green. We got in a great match and enjoyed a 70 degree day in November in Virginia, which doesn’t normally happen. I appreciate all the hard work y’all put into the game. It means so much more than a place to play.
Love reading comments about course maintenance - also the ones about working at courses. First job out of college when had no idea what I wanted to do was working at a private 9 holer. Loved it - mowing fairways and rough with an old Jacobsen tractor and two sets of gang mowers. As a teacher I’ve been mowing greens & occasionally fairways for last 13 summers and at times it sucks to get up early but nothing beats being the only one out on the course early in the morning.
Also, my cousin is our Superintendent - hardest working guy I know. Most golfers don’t have any clue how much time and effort maintenance staff puts into making their course look amazing.
@JoeoftheNorth thanks for starting this thread and good luck - would love to play your course it looks great!
It’s been a quiet few months from me in the nest and on this thread, but I’m going to put an end to that now !
A little switch up for me this year in terms of “profession” I’m going to be heading the irrigation for 6 new holes this season if all goes to plan. I hope it gives a different insight to the course development side of things and any questions one has to answer I’m happy to entertain !
Good to see you back Joe! Any news on when the course is opening?
Are there any supers on here that are willing to share their official job description/expectations. On my clubs board and we are updating our internal processes.
