Double Bogey Dave 2020: Why Live Under Par When You Can Double It? Platform in Post 66

And that is an absolutely fine policy. It’s just not the one that is written in the community guidelines. Thus, my question.

Well…my “proponent” comment was a joke referencing a few different scenes from Strapped. I honestly have no idea where he stands on just about any issue. But if he said something to you in a DM that contradicts the rules, how was I suppose to know that?

You weren’t supposed to know the contents of the message. But his public messages have been pretty consistent. He doesn’t care what the flags are for, he just doesn’t want to deal with them.

So why not remove the instructions to “Just flag it.”?

24.6 good enough for you?

It is. We have a great deal in common my friend.

Flagging is a tough subject. I don’t think I have ever flagged a comment (maybe I have, but if I did I can’t recall it).

What I do believe is that people need to be respectful of each other and their opinions even if they disagree. Variety is the spice of life.

I don’t agree with @Eric_Denver much, but I do appreciate the different perspective he provides even if I think it’s dead wrong. Some people have chosen to ignore his comments while others go right at it. Both of these options are fine. What isn’t fine is just flagging a bunch of posts because you don’t like what someone has to say.

I was born into a generation (X) that has a foot in the baby boomers world and the world of the Millennials (less so in Gen Z, but I’ll do my best to understand). I’ve seen how ugly the old views of the world are and I lean very heavily towards the side of equality for all. However, I also understand that there are cultural differences between generations, and what was once OK is not OK these days (and in many cases never should have been OK).

In a nutshell, some old timers like to lament the “good old days” while the young’uns often want to suppress unpopular points of view.

The most important things to remember that this is an internet forum and we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously.

Don’t be a scumbag and use your best judgment. Words to live by.

If he really doesn’t want any flags, then I agree. Just eliminate them and be done. That wasn’t how I interpreted his comments, but I haven’t had any conversations with him, so I might have misinterpreted. I think flags should be used for truly egregious behavior that rises above what should be ignored. Things like repeatedly posting obscene images or physically threatening someone. If someone needs their mommy to step in any time they are called a name, that’s a problem and I can see why he wouldn’t want to deal with it.

In all of my years of being on message boards I’ve only ever had one post flagged and that was here. I asked someone what was wrong with them and if they acted this way in real life. It got flagged and I completely understand why Randy would be sick of dealing with those types of flags.

Flags are like fire alarms. They serve a purpose, but should only be pulled when there is a fire, not when you want to sneak out of class.

Exactly. You get what you give. Just shrug it off and move on.

Do we even know if this is on the table here? haha

Of course, @Eric_Denver was suspended after being flagged for doing none of those things. Which brings me back to my question of whether the community guidelines will be changed so that new users—whom every candidate has professed to care so much about—will have some idea what the rules of the road are.

Weird to me that nobody wants to commit to scrapping the community guidelines that are just boilerplate that comes with the software. We’re not taking about getting something ratified by 3/4 of the states here.

No, of course not. I should say commit to advocating scrapping or changing them.

I’m open to this idea. If elected, I will seek your input on making updates to the guidelines so that everyone has clear guidance on what the rules of the road are for flags.

My inclination is that they should be used very sparingly.

It’s all very boring in here with this flag this and flag that. Might have to flag the thread for being sooooo dull…

DBD watches more refuge action than porn, don’t know if that’s worth my vote or not yet.
