Credit Cards: Which One Should I Choose? + CC Points Redemption Tips

In the Homewood suites example you showed, totally makes sense to transfer to Hilton then!

I think my point is on general cash value. From all the YouTube videos I’ve watched recently, they all say redeeming AMEX points for hotels (even if transferring to hotel partners) is not the best redemption value. Although your Homewood find has me wondering…

Hilton and Marriott redemptions are garbage imo, I wouldn’t waste MR on them. Hyatt has by far the best hotel redemptions, but you need their card or Chase for that.

If my math is right, you would basically be getting that $500 room for $300 if you transferred AMEX points to Hilton with the double point thing. Not too bad of a deal there

I was listening to the podcast All the Hacks recently, and I learned about a Mastercard, Bilt Rewards that you can use to pay rent that won’t charge any extra fees. Not being able to earn points on my rent because I refuse to pay the ridiculous fees has been something that has greatly annoyed me since I became a renter last year. The points from this card can be used to book travel and also on Amazon.

Daaamn that’s a really good deal. Would love to get points on rent. Will keep this in mind for the future (2 new cards this year is weighing on the credit score atm)

The key is to get so many new cards that it doesn’t ding you…

We use Bilt! It’s crazy easy and a great way to both build your credit even more through renting and earn points.

Just got the 150k Platinum offer. Would jump on it if I was traveling more

I’ve been loving the Platinum benefits thus far. About 6 months in and haven’t even been able to travel all that much.

If you’re in a position to use the streaming, uber, Saks 5th Ave and Equinox benefits, those by themselves can get you the annual fee’s worth of benefits (and then some). Personally I don’t have an equinox in the neighborhood but I certainly make the most of the others. It’s nice that the card also can be pretty worthwhile if it matches your spending habits while you go through a period of not traveling too much.

@tylernichols91 what else is in the current offer besides 150k signup bonus? Any 10x points on spend categories for 6 months or whatnot? Curious to see what they’re floating now relative to the programs they were offering back in January.

Doesn’t look like anything other than the 50k points over the non targeted sign up

Ah that’s a bummer. If you’re not dying to have it now, I’d probably say wait for another signup drive to come around. The bonus point spending categories were the real juicy part of the winter offers. Seems like every 8-12 months they do something like that.

For sure. Peacock, Uber Eats, some Saks stuff for the fiancé all paid for. Really nice deals. I can finally watch The Office on demand again lol

First time flying with the Venture X benefits. Spent time 45 very quiet minutes in a priority pass lounge with free breakfast and then later just walked straight to my Hertz rental car and drove away.

@avess I’m planning to pull the trigger on the Venture X this week. From what I’ve gathered, I don’t have a targeted offer above and beyond the regular 75,000 miles, so I’m happy to apply off of your referral link if you can shoot one over in the next day or two

Ohhh yes. Will DM.

(I don’t really know much about credit cards)

I’m moving across the country in a couple of months, and will therefore be spending a bunch of money at one time. Would this be a good time to sign up for a new card?

If it matters- I just finished grad school and got my first real job. I have a discover card that I don’t use and a Citi double cash card that I use almost every day. I think my credit score is about 750.

What city did you decide on?

Seattle. I haven’t signed a lease yet (which is when the move will be official in my mind) but I’m hoping to very soon!

Yes, perfect time to grab a credit card. Shouldn’t have an issue hitting any spending bonus out there (I think the most aggressive ones are $6k in 3 months after opening). I’ll leave it to @jandywlu for any dissecting on your habits and what makes sense for you, but The Points Guy and NerdWallet are my go-to online resources to figure out what makes sense given my current situation
