What does this mean (maybe nothing more than there’s money in it) since the PGA TOUR has been involved in the past Matches? Brooks and BAD not renewing their LIV contracts, PGAT and PIF negotiations getting closer, etc.?
It could mean any of those. Honestly, I’m thankful for the unknown and the juice. The whole PGAT/LIV thing was petering out and I was sad to lose one of my favorite threads.
I hope they hit those fake smoke balls people use for gender reveals but they are black or white smoke to let us know if negotiations are completed or not
i can’t remember one match that was actually good, but i hope they bring their game and some decent shit talking. and maybe this is the future of golf entertainment. TGL and The Match during primetime and then PGA Tour and LIV go fuck off somewhere else
I think what they need to do to make it better is to add a gambling element. Seems like there hasn’t been enough emphasis on gambling in prior "Match"es.
I believe one of Phil’s major beefs with the Tour was that the first Match with him and Tiger the Tour insisted they be involved and comped $1M in order to grant them a waiver. Part of the “obnoxious greed”.
I kind of doubt it means anything. The last few matches have sucked so much. I kind of see the conversation there going like this:
Turner: We want to do a Rory/Scottie vs Brooks/BAD match.
PGAT: Eh…how about instead of Brooks/BAD you do Xander/Collin as the other team?
Turner: No one wants that.
PGAT: How about Hidecki and Viktor?
Turner: Guys, we are not doing this without the PGA Tour vs. LIV storyline.
PGAT: How about Cantlay and Xander, those guys are pals.
Turner: Look, we would do 4 LIV players before we do 4 PGA Tour players. Have fun telling your 2 most profitable players you said no to this. Especially when you were supposed to have a merger done 10 months ago.
Golf is always going to terrible for television when they’re showing one foursome. There is just way too much downtime. The solution, of course, is to pre-package something like this, but you gotta give the addicts their fix. Lot’s of money to be made from degenerates.
The other problem is that no one cares about the stakes because these guys are already so goddamn rich (and good for them). Like, make the stakes something like Brooks and Bryson can play in up to five Tour events, or they can come back without any repercussions, or they kick Jay in the balls or something if they win, and if Rory/Scottie lose, they each get a fingertip bonesawed, or they have to play some LIV events, but only the ones overseas. Let’s play for some real goddamn stakes!
This is the problem right here. It could be incredible if it is filmed in advance and made into a slick production that doesn’t have the dead space between shots.
At some point the economics don’t make sense. Are the TV Broadcasters really getting so much money from gambling site sponsors/gambling viewers that it outweighs making a tighter tv product that goes an exact amount of time and the increased viewers that comes with a better tv product?
If so, are there really so many people gambling on this that it continues to be worthwhile for gambling sites to prop up a substandard tv product to be live just for the sake of the few couple hundred bettors you get going on this?
Maybe I’m just totally under a rock here. But gambling on this can’t be in the 10s of millions of dollars of profit that this whole house of cards needs to work, can it?
Of course golf waits two years to have a LIV vs PGA Tour match when now no one cares about the tour’s beef. This might have been interesting in 2022.
I feel like we say this every year when one of these gets announced while completely forgetting that these guys are the biggest and most awkward nerds in sports. Brooks and Bryson showed last year they can’t shot talk and there is zero chance Rory and Scottie have any shit talking skills. Our best bet is for multiple cringe moments we can make fun of them about. Otherwise this event is going to suck just like literally every other time they’ve done this.
