By the Numbers 2019 (aka...Deven who?)

By the numbers

  • Rounds posted: 18
  • High / low / average: 100 (twice) / 74 (+10), 86-non exec course (thrice) / 89
  • Best 9: 35 (+3)
  • High cap / low / final(current): 18.1 / 15.9 / 16.4
  • Stat of choice: 3 straight birdies for the first time during round over summer

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Got a club fitting for the first time, resulting in me recently getting clubs that actual match my swing
  • Good: Currently on a 4 round run of 33% GIR or better
  • Bad: Averaging 2.3 putts per GIR during ^^^
  • Bad: Absolute trash play from <80 yards; recently got new CBX wedges and first round with them appears like this might hopefully be an issue of the past
  • Ugly: Blowup holes continue to derail any rounds of quality

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Maderas
  • Golf Club of Houston

2020 Goals

  • 95 or better at all of the Bandon courses in May with @pushdraw
  • Get cap to 12 or better
  • Get lessons for the first time

Edit Goal: Find a way to get that the language in my handle cleaned up for all of the women and children on the message boards

  • Rounds posted: 70 (not including solo rounds and a few others)
  • High / low / average: 93 / 71 / 82.2
  • High cap / low / final (current): 7.4 / 5.2 / 5.7

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Broke par on the day before my wedding, shooting 5 under 31 on the back and making birdie on 18 for a -1 71. Made a lot of progress with driving the ball more consistently, and a mid-year putter switch paid huge dividends.
  • Bad: When it was bad, it was really bad. Two way miss reared its ugly hit too often, and had some issues with over-drawing the ball (read: hook) with my irons for a bit. Also had the putting yips for a few weeks which necessitated the aforementioned putter change.
  • Ugly: Losing one share of $GOOG to my buddy on the 17th green at Cabot Cliffs.

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Fox Chapel (82)
  • PGA West Stadium (75)
  • Cabot Cliffs (82, 85, 80)
  • Cabot Links (81, 83)
  • Manele (82, 79, 79)
  • Eastward Ho! (79)

2020 Goals

  • Shoot in the 60s once
  • Sub 3 Index
  • Get my 3rd ace

not that it should really be a shock given this is a niche golf message board, but it’s impressive to see how many indexes we have here that are < 6. certainly not reflective of the golfing population

Sir…welcome to the thread

Adjacent goal: break 90 at any of them (hopefully I don’t have to only apply this logic to Preserve)

Already there, just need to contribute courses instead of incredible ideas

Lots of little things. I’ve always been fairly straight / long off the tee, so I can usually avoid trouble there. Made a small swing change mid-year (not rolling on the out-step of my back foot during backswing) that helped my GIRS, minimized misses and helped proximity. Since I can’t chip, the difference between putter and chipping is ~ 1 stoke per miss. Like most swing tweaks, we’ll see how long this one works.

  • High cap / low / final: 5.2 / 2.0 / 3.0

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Finished 5th in my club championship’s 36 hole match play qualifier for the 2nd straight year
  • Bad: Failed to make it out of the first round for the 2nd straight year
  • Ugly: Could not have regressed more as a putter.

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Windsor Club
  • Sweetens Cove
  • Forest Dunes/ The Loop
  • Detroit Golf Club
  • Rackham GC

2020 Goals

  • Figure out how to be at least average at putting
  • Avoid starting the season super slow. Last two years I have finished the season between a 2-3, ballooned to a 5-7 around late May before bringing it back down to around a 2 in August. Really hard to take steps forward when you spend 75% of the season either getting worse or back to where you were the year before.

  • High cap / low / current: 13.8 / 11.9 / 11.9
  • Stat of choice: Index improved every month of the year

The Good / Bad / Ugly

  • Good: so much…Met some of you guise in Denver (where my random partner and I won the am best ball at Common Ground), Played the most golf in my life, lowest 9, broke 80 for the first time, joined a NCGA associate club and posted my first ever T scores (x3).
  • Good: I’ve gotten into the equipment tinkering scene and love it.
  • Bad: like most ams I struggle with consistency, I also struggle on more difficult courses and make some annoyingly big numbers.
  • Ugly: Speaking of T scores, had a 3 hole stretch on the back 9 in the NCGA 4 man best ball where the S#$%^*s made and appearance…right after a birdie.

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Common Ground, King Kamehamea, Olympic (ocean), Lake Merced

  • Practice chipping / putting 1x/week min
