By the Numbers 2019 (aka...Deven who?)

The active GHIN season is over here in Massachusetts, USA. How did yours go? Goals for 2020?

Here’s my season and a template.

By the numbers

  • Rounds posted: 69 (no kids, took full advantage of my high school teacher summer vacation)
  • High / low / average: 98 / 78 / 88.5
  • Best 9: 36 (+1)
  • High cap / low / final: 13.9 / 11.1 / 12.4
  • Stat of choice: When I hit the fairway, I made par or better exactly 50% of the time. When I missed the fairway, I made par or better 25% of the time

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Played a lot of golf with a lot of great people, posted first ever T scores.
  • Good: Improved my understanding of my golf swing.
  • Bad: The main problem with my swing – stall out, early extend, FLIP IT – didn’t fix itself (no shit)
  • Ugly: Ball striking some of the time, impact position all of the time

Not that you asked, but this year I played

2020 Goals

  • Make an eagle
  • Post a T score in the 70s
  • Play 18 with nothing worse than bogey.

  • High / low / average: 92 / 79 / 85.6
  • Best 9: Probably 36.
  • High cap / low / final: 10.9 / 9.6 / 10.0

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Had my first hole in one.
  • Good: After getting my first eagle last year, had like 4 or 5 this year.
  • Good: Won a match in the club championship my first time playing in it
  • Bad: Sucked shit for most of July / August
  • Ugly: Fought a MASSIVE left pull hook all summer. Finally sort of ironed it out. Hopefully. Fuck.

Goals for 2020

  • Get to single digits and stay there
  • Get rid of the snapper
  • Play some cool places

According to the WSGA site:

By the numbers

  • 42 rounds (most of my golf is 9 holes at a time)
  • High: 83, Low: 68, Avg: 76
  • High cap: 4.9, Low cap: 2.5, Final: 2.6
  • Not apples to apples, but Game Golf had my putting at a 4 handicap and I finished the season slightly on the plus side with Arccos.

The good, bad and ugly

  • Good: finished 2nd in the club championship
  • Bad: made 6 double bogeys in the 2 days ^^
  • Ugly: my tee shot on the first hole of ^^ wound up 3 ft off the ground in the limb of a pine tree. (hacked out sideways and saved par though)

Favorite course: Greywalls (again)
Memorable round: Finally breaking par on my home course (with a 68)

2020 Goals:

  • get down to a 1.x
  • play in at least one state level tournament
  • actually win the club championship
  • play golf with someone from the forum

By the numbers

  • 114 rounds (Gotta be a personal record)
  • High: 86, Low: 67, Avg: 75.4
  • High cap: 3.3, Low cap: +1.1, Final: 0.0

The good, bad and ugly

  • Good: Had two sustained stretches where I played the best golf I’ve ever played. At times the hole looked like a basketball hoop. Shot 29 once, 31 twice, and had to have had the most birdies per round that I’ve ever had.
  • Good: Made legitimate strides in my golf swing for the first time in my life.
  • Bad: Still a lot of stinky golf. Just had a 7 round stretch where my highest score was 74, and followed it with an 84 and an 85. When it goes, it goes. It’s all iron play.
  • Ugly: Never hit more cold shanks in my life. It lingers so heavily.

Favorite course: Carne (you’ll see on Tuesday)
Memorable round: Mid-Am qualifier. +5 through 5, got all the way back to even before doubling the last. Led the field in birdies and didn’t sniff a spot. Insanely fun with Hueber on the bag reading my putts.

2020 Goals:

  • Make it to US Open Sectionals
  • Qualify for the 2020 Mid-Am

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Second best round ever (80)
  • Good: Got off the tee well for much of the summer
  • Bad: Pulls with short irons ruined a bunch of rounds (for now, mostly fixed)
  • Ugly: Club championship stroke play rounds were poor again.

Goals for 2020

  • Get down to single digits
  • Break 80 more than once
  • Play more courses

Aight, here we go:

By the numbers:

77 rounds

High: 87 Low: 65 Average: 75.1 (Sorry @Soly)

High handicap: Around 2-2.5 Low handicap: +3.3 Final: +2.6

Good, Bad, and Ugly

Good: Finally broke the glass ceiling of my first round in the 60s, and have played the best golf of my life, including 4 tournament rounds in the 60s

Good: Learned how to legitimately practice efficiently, and that has helped me improve boatloads

Bad: I can rarely stop myself from falling apart. Once I get in my own head, I really start to struggle mentally, and before you know it, it’s an 85.

Ugly: I know how to shoot in the 60s, but I have fear of going low/Icarito in my veins which KILLS me sometimes.

Favorite course: Rawls Course at Texas Tech
Memorable Round: Bogey-free 65 following a 68 at a local tournament to win by 2. Never been so automatic in my life.

2020 Goals

Top 10 in an AJGA

Win a prize for commenting something on a Tourist Sauce Episode

Win another Legends Junior Tour event (Texas’ AJGA pretty much)

Edit: I also want to figure out how to make a bulleted list because I thought I did it but I guess not.

  • Rounds posted: Not enough! Didn’t start posting until later in the year and most of my rounds are 9 (so only 10)
  • High / low / average: 97/81/89.4
  • Best 9: 39 (+3)
  • High cap / low / final: 18/15/15
  • Stat of choice: I have more 3 putt bogeys than 1 putt pars. Not ideal

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Played a lot of golf and tried out new courses. I got very comfortable just going out and playing as a single but also had a couple of opportunities to get out with my folks and one of my brothers which is really special.
  • Good: My consistency and skill have started to improve. I went from one of the 3-4 women I play with who would be considered better than the rest to the best (I know that sounds douchey but the group I play with wouldn’t have an issue with me saying that. They know I’m also the one who takes it way too seriously!). Also good for golf but also life, I really spent a lot of time on fitness this year and have improved my physical makeup that I think will really lead to better golf.
  • Bad: I’ve still a ways to go on consistency. Sometimes will just develop the shanks and not know why. I don’t always trust myself standing over the ball. Haven’t found that group yet that wants to go out on weekend and play 18 and try out different courses or look into golf trips
  • Ugly: I already mentioned the shanks

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Northview (former home of Greater Vancouver Open)
  • Swan-e-set (former home of Happy Gilmore)
  • Ledgeview (former home of Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor)

2020 Goals

  • Hold my own with the guise in Scotland
  • Make an eagle
  • Post a score in the 70s
  • Have more 1 putt pars than 3 putt bogeys

  • High cap / low / final: 6.6 / 4.5 / 6.6

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Moved to Hawaii and can play year round.
  • Bad: The courses on Oahu are kind of junk.
  • Ugly: My last 3 rounds I have averaged six 3-putts per round and my last round was in the 90’s. I’ve shot in the 90’s 5 times in the last 6 years.

2020 Goals

  • Honestly have lost the drive to play consistently so hopefully get that back. Likely moving to Colorado so at least the quality of courses should improve.
  • Decrease the 3-putts to 1-2 per round.
  • Join an overseas club. I’ve been saying this for years but I’m going to figure out which one and pull the trigger.

Great thread idea.

By the numbers

  • Rounds posted: 13 (The arrival of a baby reduced my golf time by almost 70% on the previous few years.)
  • High / low / average: 97 / 78 / 89.8
  • Best 9: 38
  • High cap / low / final: 11.9 / 8.7 / 11.9
  • Stat of choice: Hit the green in regulation 64% of the time on hole #7. Overall GIR average was a shocking 27%.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good: Reached an all time low handicap of 8.7
  • Good: Enjoyed every round I played, even when the scoring wasn’t so hot.
  • Bad: After the kid was born, and my playing frequency dropped, the big right miss reappeared.
  • Ugly: The number of times I employed the new drop on the fairway for a two stroke penalty rule after losing my ball into knee high grass right of the fairway.

Not that you asked, but this year I played

The two most interesting courses I played this year were Harrison Hills and Trophy Club (both in central Indiana). Definitely want to get back to both again soon.

2020 Goals

  • Play more golf. Should be able to achieve this after I move back to Australia in May, where the grandparents can help with babysitting on the weekends.
  • Get my handicap back to single figures.
  • Join club, qualify for top flight in club championship.

Love this idea

By the numbers:

53 rounds

High: 98 Low: 69 (par 68), 72 on par 72 Average: 81

High handicap: 7.8 Low handicap: 4.5 Final: 7.4

Good, Bad, and Ugly

Good: joined a club and find I play SO much more, and get so much better with all aspects of the game because of it. And enjoy it more.

Bad: Can’t seem to get all parts of the game to function at least somewhat correctly all at once. 3 3-putts the other day in an otherwise solid round. Can’t have 2 3-putt bogeys on par 5s…

Ugly: Had the shanks in the middle of the fall for about a month…seems like they’re gone…for now…:eyes:

2020 Goals

Get back under 5 hdcp

Play Chambers Bay and Bandon

Shoot under par 5 times

Stat goals: avg putts/round under 31, avg > 50% FIR and GIR for the year.

Cheers, everyone!

  • High cap / low / final: 4.1 / 2.2/ 4.1
  • Stat of choice: According to my Golfshot stats, I averaged a shade over 12 GIR and just about 34 putts per round.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good - Had 5 rounds under par this season, 2 of them tied my personal best (3 under)
  • Bad - Didn’t play great in any tournament rounds. Had a T7 finish in the county Am with a couple of decent rounds, but the rest of my competitive season was garbage.
  • UGLY - My putts per GIR according to Golfshot was 2.05

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Streamsong - all 3 courses. Love that place

2020 Goals

  • Spending two weeks in Scotland in May. My goal for that trip is to well enough to enjoy/appreciate those courses
  • Need to get my putting up to the level of my ball striking. I’d be happy with 30 putts per round. Recently switched to Odyssey Armlock putter - early results are promising.

Yeah, kinda sad considering the quality on the other islands.

By the numbers

  • 129 scores posted to GHIN
  • High: 87, Low: 67, Avg: 75.28
  • High cap: 2.3, Low cap: +1.8, Final: +1.4

The good, bad and ugly

  • Good: Became a plus handicap again in my first full golf year after quitting for eight years
  • Good: Missed qualifying in for the U.S. Mid Am by one after four putting the second hole
  • Good: Played well in the City Championship making 22 birdies and an eagle in 69 holes. I got knocked out of match play by Will Grimmer (Ohio State grad, All-American, in final stage of Q-school)
  • Good: Completed the birdie every hole/eagle every five par challenge at my home course
  • Good: Made my first hole in one - an albatrace
  • Good: My strokes gained around the green would have been top 25 on Tour
  • Bad: Way too many doubles.
  • Bad: Had several rounds where I was -4 or -5 with five to play and blew them
  • Bad: odds on favorite to win the club championship and lost in the semis
  • Ugly: My predominant shot was a pull hook this year; never used to hit that shot
  • Ugly: barely hit 50% of fairways and 50% of greens this year

Favorite courses: Moraine, We-Ko-Pa Saguaro, Talking Stick (Coore/Crenshaw)

Most Fun: The Duel to Death: The Strong Like Stella Cincinnati Open (playing, planning, Duel official)

2020 Goals:

  • Get back to my previous low handicap of +4
  • Eliminate the pull hook and get my feels back
  • Feel like I can make putts again
  • Win the club championship
  • Qualify for the U.S. Mid-Am and U.S. Am
  • Make it U.S. Open Sectionals

You’re just going to leave off thinking the 36 hole qualifier for the U.S. Am was one day and not two, huh?

Our the By The Numbers were quite similar. You seem to have much more potential to go stupid low though.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • Good - Broke par for the first time, took down allcomers at matchplay, Club Singles Champion.
  • Good - Got properly fitted for a driver. 12 degree and a short shaft. Basically a 2 wood, but whatever!
  • Bad - Recovering from a bad case of the shanks.
  • UGLY - I’m a mental midget, put a card in my hand in a Saturday comp I’ll start bogey-double and quickly lose interest, thus the stagnant handicap.

Not that you asked, but this year I played

  • Castle Stuart, Dornoch, Nairn, Moray, Walton Heath. Swinley Forest and Hankley Common in a couple of weeks. Had a very nice day at Essendon with @The_Cad_Says, then he and @OneLondonGolfer and a very jetlagged @JohnnyPanton came over to my place. Must do more Refuge golf.
