Do you think Minjee still even likes golf? I don’t get that vibe off her.
I hope she does?
Lydia’s approach into 18 at St Andrews was as good as it gets. Absolute dagger.
Minjee is an Australian version of Lexi Thompson. Ball striking all timer. Sketchy short game and putting holding back all time greatness.
It’ll happen with Nelly. I feel like she’s got the engine going now and the next couple of years will continue to be pretty dominant. If she’s not way out in front she’s chasing people down.
I’ve never been a doubter of Nelly. She has all the tools and has the start of a HoF resume. She is almost level with Jin Young Ko.
Everyone seems to forget the approach into 17. With the conditions she was facing at that time.
Was absolutely nails. 18 was great, don’t get me wrong, but I think the approach on 17 clinched it
I mean… Inbee has seven, but Lydia only has three majors IIRC. So that feels like a strange sentence to write.
Nelly: 2 and 15 (LPGA)
Lydia: 3 and 22 (LPGA)
Nelly could have another year like this year and be right there with Lydia. Or she could have this year spread out over three years and be at Lydia’s numbers.
I think the equipment change is the larger thing at play, rarely do people do full-bag equipment switches and have an amazing year.
Absolutely. Nelly has the opportunity to eclipse all of them, though Inbee will be a much harder one to beat.*
Lydia also has a bronze, silver, and gold medal in Olympic golf. Three medals in three Olympics! Nelly has a gold as well, so who knows if she doesn’t get another one in LA at Riv?
*Pernilla Lindberg has done absolutely nothing since she clipped Inbee at the ANA for her lone major — and her only win on tour. It’s a shame Inbee didn’t get #8 there because she might have stuck around a little longer.
Man I hope the LPGA sees a little break from one off, do nothing else major winners
I was hoping this would get the conversation started.
I agree with this take, winning at St Andrews and a gold medal in the same year will be something we all remember for decades to come.
I think Nelly was the best player this year but her performance faded at exactly the wrong time.
I think this came true, she won a major, it was a disappointment.
My hot take is a player of the year award decided by a points system is stupid. You lose out on the conversation and positive engagement that comes with debating the player of the year.
Tom Callahan once wrote about Arnold Palmer
It was as if God said to Nicklaus, “You will have skills like no other,” then whispered to Palmer, “but they will love you more.”
I think about this quote often, in my head, not as it relates to Jack and Arnie, but more so as a way to provide context to a (any) situation and make a point. Sometimes being the best isn’t always the best.
It was as if God said to Nelly, “You will be the best player in the World, you’ll win 7 times in a season” then whispered to Lydia, “but you’ll win at St. Andrews and win Olympic Gold."
Nothing sums up the inner workings of the LPGA right now than putting this out on their website and having multiple typos in the release:
Now I’m invested to see if you find all of the errors.
There’s another date earlier in the schedule that is wrong as well.
Damn, this is some sloppy stuff. No excuse either.
29 round event with a cut after 15 rounds. Sounds about right.
