But seriously. That’s incredible.
I would put that on my tombstone. That is incredible.
It would be the only thing in my obit.
“Beat Tiger Woods once”
It was one golf tournament and, even as good as he was/is and despite the gap between us, shit like this still can happen over a single event.
We’re getting close to 30 years since it happened and it still comes up all the time. I never mention it but the people I work with do all the time at meetings. I have an investor in my fund who I am pretty sure invested because of this. For sure, I was able to get through the initial screening because of the golf stories.
Official 1997 Masters highlight video:
Amazing to see Tiger just ripping the absolute shit out of a steel shafted driver.
Same here. I have vague recollections of the final round of the '07 US Open, but I can vividly remember 2008. I actually got off school on Monday and went to work with my dad so that I could watch the playoff on his computer (we didn’t have one at home then).
Can’t wait for 1998 and some spicy takes about Kuchar’s Dad. He was a menace in the majors.
I’ve asked about this before, but since you remember the Venturi days…
At one point Bill Raftery’s wikipedia said he did some golf for CBS. Do you remember that at all?
Not really. I’m presuming he was in Nantz’s chair before Jim got that job? I started paying attention to pro golf on TV around 1991, and I think that was close to when Nantz took over. But now that I think about it, I recall when Pat Summerall was in that chair.
Pat Summerall
Vin Scully had the chair for a bit. Not sure the timelines.
Vin Scully was ABC, no? Yes, they used to broadcast golf on ABC, way yonder and at least 80 lbs ago.
Bring Raferty back now. I’d watch that.
Vin was CBS in the late 70s/early 80s. Moved to NBC in 83 when they got the baseball contract.
He walked at Augusta so Rose Zhang’s father could run.
You can catch an audio clip of Vin in the Tall Tales Gary Player pod, when Gary wins the 1978 Masters.
I DID IT BUTCH
Fuzzy - scum.
I’ve been watching golf since middle school (mid 80’s) and don’t remember Raftery calling golf at all. I would love to hear a good “onions” call for a quality golf shot though!
“Send it in, Jerome!”
